WagerWeb Weekly Betting Recap: NFC Title Game No. 1
by Doc's Sports/WagerWeb Staff - 1/24/2012
We unveil a new (mostly) weekly story here at Doc’s as the folks at WagerWeb have been good enough to provide what the most-wagered games of the previous week were and a look at how bettors were leaning to perhaps give you a behind-the scenes sports betting guide.
Unless you live in a cave – or I guess outside of the United States – you know that the NFL drives the bus in terms of betting action in this country. Thus, needless to say, the two highest-bet games of any sport last week at WagerWeb were the two NFL conference finals on Sunday.
The later a game starts generally means the better action because that lures more of those West Coast bettors. And the prime-time New York Giants-San Francisco 49ers NFC title tilt took the week in terms of action. The book opened the 49ers at -3, but the Giants drew heavy action during the week to close it at New York +2 by kickoff – about 60 percent of the bets overall on the spread came on the G-Men, thus making it a solid win for players.
The total opened at 43.5 but that dropped significantly during the week largely due to the inclement weather forecast, which proved to be true. It closed at 40.5. But even with the weather and two strong defensive teams, about 61 percent of the total bets went on the ‘over’, making it a win for the book.
The AFC Championship Game between the Ravens and Patriots saw interesting two-sided action. The home Pats opened as 7.5-point favorites at the book but were down to seven by kickoff. Most of the action on the spread came in on the Ravens during the week, but once the weekend hit, New England started taking huge money on pretty much every option. New England was -4.0 on the first-half line and -3.5 on the second-half line. Obviously New England wasn’t able to cover any of the spreads, giving the book a win overall on that game as about 62 percent of all pointspread action was on New England.
The book opened New England at -3 (-125) for Super Bowl XLVI over New York in a rematch of that epic Giants upset of the then-unbeaten Pats four seasons ago. The early action on the spread has been mostly even so far and the book expects that line to stay at three. The total opened at 56 and was quickly dropped to 55, and the book has been seeing big early action on the over at that number. The first-half line is New England -1.5 (27.5). More than 500 prop bets will be available for the Super Bowl at WagerWeb.
In college basketball, the top game of the week was last Monday night’s Big 12 battle between Top-10 teams Baylor and Kansas. The line stayed steady at -7.0 on the host Jayhawks, who had never lost at home to the Bears. And they still haven’t, crushing Baylor 92-74 to give BU its first loss of the season. The Bears had been off to the best start in school history at 17-0. The result was good for the book as 73 percent of all bets came in on Baylor.
The book projects this week’s most-wagered game to be Sunday afternoon’s CBS national telecast between Big Ten contenders Michigan and Ohio State.
In the NBA, the Lakers are one of the book’s favorite teams every year and the two biggest games of the week for it were Lakers matchups: L.A. hosting the champion Dallas Mavericks last Monday night and then the rising Indiana Pacers on Sunday night. Against the Mavs, the Lakers opened as four-point favorites in a 73-70 ugly win. About 57 percent of the action on the spread was on Kobe Bryant and Co., so a win for the book. Bettors really backed L.A. in Sunday’s game over Indiana, with the Lakers going off as 5.5-point favorites and losing 98-96 for their first home loss since the Christmas opener against the Bulls.
The book projects Sunday’s Bulls at Heat ABC game to take the most NBA action this week in their first meeting since last year’s Eastern Conference Finals.
