College Football Odds to Win Conference: Best Bets
by Dave Schwab - 8/8/2012
While most major sportbooks in the gaming industry have already released their futures odds for each of the major conferences for the upcoming college football season, 5Dimes has gone the extra mile by posting an elaborate collection of prop bets based on those futures odds.
The following is a brief look at some of the best bets when it comes to wagering on a team’s chances to win its conference in relation to the “field” it will be competing against in the form of a money line bet.
Big Ten
Wisconsin wins the Big Ten Championship +165
The Field wins the Big Ten Championship -205
Most books had already opened Wisconsin as the clear-cut favorite to win the Big Ten’s Leaders Division even before all the trouble at Penn State and with Ohio State suspended from postseason play. Now with the Lions also out of the picture, the Badgers should coast their way to the conference title game.
Michigan is considered by most as the favorite to win the Legends Division, but the Wolverines will still have to contend with Nebraska and Michigan State to come out on top. Whichever of the three teams survives the regular season gauntlet to advance to the title game will not be an overwhelming favorite against the Badgers, so go with the favorable +165 money line on Wisconsin to win the only real challenge it will face all season long.
Big 12
Oklahoma wins the Big 12 Title +120
The Field wins the Big 12 Title -150
This conference is a direct race to the finish with no divisions and no end-of-the-season title game. That simply means that if Oklahoma runs the table in the regular season, like it is expected to, it will be crowned the Big 12 Champion. The Sooners are already considered one of the top teams in the nation and a major player in this season’s BCS national title picture.
Oklahoma heads into the regular season ranked No. 4 in the preseason USA Today Coaches’ Poll with the next team in the Big 12, West Virginia, coming in at No. 11. Texas is third at No.15 followed by TCU at No.17. Both the Mountaineers and the Horned Frogs are new to the conference and bound to slip up a few times along the way, while the Longhorns are coming off a 4-5 record in Big 12 play last year.
Even if Oklahoma does lose one or two games in the conference, it will most likely still have a better record than any of these three other teams, so take the +120 money line on the Sooners to walk away with this season’s Big 12 title.
PAC-12
Oregon wins the Pac-12 North Division Title -280
The Field wins the Pac-12 North Division Title +280
It is obvious that with the costly money line on the Ducks to win their division that they are prohibitive favorites to do so, but this is one of those rare times that the reward clearly outweighs the risk.
In all likelihood, this season’s Pac-12 title is going to come down to a championship showdown between USC and Oregon. The Trojans are ranked third in the Coaches’ Poll and the Ducks are ranked fifth. Neither team should have any problem advancing to the title game as the only real drama in the conference is which team will win the regular-season clash on Nov.3 in Los Angeles.
Stick with the Ducks all the way to win a quick $100 on this prop bet. In case you were wondering what the odds on UCS besting the field in the South Division were, the money line on the Trojans is -750 and it is +450 for the field.
