Weekly Sports Betting Hot/Cold List
by Nolan Sinclair - Strike Point Sports - 12/15/2011
I ask you, when is enough, enough? When will our media stop forcing things down our throat? How is it when a kicker hits a 59-yard field goal a quarterback gets credit for the victory? Why do superstars get away with such ridiculous behavior, be it a bench-clearing brawl on a basketball court or a primadona dancing all over a football field. Our MVPs are testing positive for performance enhancing drugs while our former athletes feel that nine years and $218 million just isn’t enough. But I ask you, when is enough, enough?
It’s been a big week. From vetoes to upset victories to a handful of very bizarre off-field incidents, last week was one of the most explosive of the season in the sports and sports betting worlds. So with that in mind I give you this week’s edition of the Hot/Cold List:
Cold List:
10. Oakland Raiders – I am dumbfounded as to how the Oakland Raiders have won seven games. Not to mention the fact that they are somehow profitable at 8-5 against the spread. In their last two games Miami and Green Bay beat them by a combined 80-30. Before that they won at San Diego, Minnesota, and beat Chicago at home. The Raiders have been a perfect example of Jekyll and Hyde. But after a while you just have to conclude that they aren’t very good.
9. Dwight Howard’s feelings for Orlando – “Superman” is hot one minute and cold the next. He says he loves Orlando, but only if they surround them with some solid players. I understand that, but that it is like saying, “Yeah I love you honey, but only if you get a boob job.” Orlando was one of the worst ATS teams in the NBA last season at 35-46-1, and if Howard bolts it could get even worse.
8. ESPN – I hate this channel more and more each week. A few years ago I had to sit through them ramming T.O. down my throat. Then it was Brett Farve and his constant retirement circus. Then Tony Romo and his Jessica Simpson romp. Now I have to hear every minute of every day how Tim Tebow is the second coming of the Lord our Savior. PTI actually had the audacity to say that Tebow is more clutch than Eli Manning. Really! Manning has 14 fourth-quarter TD’s and he has come back against Brady, Romo, and Rodgers. (And if the Giants make a tackle on the sidelines they would have upset the Packers.) Tebow has beaten a bunch of JV teams. Enough is enough.
7. San Francisco 49ers – Since starting out the season 9-0-1 ATS the 49ers have gone 1-2 ATS in their last three. Now, they face the Pittsburgh Steelers in a huge “Monday Night Football” matchup. This will be San Fran’s last home game of the season before heading on the road to face Seattle and St. Louis.
6. Tu Holloway – “We got a whole bunch of gangsters in our locker room…we went out there and zipped them up.” William Shakespeare, eat your heart out. He also said that Xavier was a bunch of “grown men”. Hey, Tu, grown men don’t throw hissy fits over something someone says on Twitter.
5. Peyton Hillis – The John Madden cover child has rushed for only 346 yards in seven games this season. Hillis has missed some games due to injury and some games due to just being a baby. Needless to say, I don’t think he will be on next year’s cover. Oh, and if you have him on your fantasy team and are hoping he can make up for this debacle of a season by helping you win a championship…I would think again.
4. Ryan Braun – Naughty, naughty! This just proves that Matt Kemp deserved the MVP. How in the world does a man in the Top 5 in almost every possible hitting category not win the NL MVP? Well MVP voters, it serves you right. The Brewers were the second most profitable team last year at the books. It will be interesting to see how they fair with Braun missing a possible 50-games.
3. Go Daddy.com Bowl/BBVA Compass Bowl – So after the Cotton Bowl and before the BCS Championship Game we have the opportunity to watch these bowls on Jan. 7 and 8, respectively. The Go Daddy Bowl is Arkansas State vs. Northern Illinois and the BBVA Bowl is SMU vs. Pitt. And this is the reason we can’t have a playoff? So we can have these monumental bowl games at the end of the year?
2. The NBA’s handling of the Chris Paul Saga – It worked out, sort of, with Paul heading to the Clippers to throw alley oops to Blake Griffin. But the NBA is on a downward spiral following the lockout and they need a Sammy Sosa/Mark McGwire type show to bring it back to the light. Our collective hate for the Miami Heat can only take them so far.
1. Cincinnati Bearcats – How is what Gates did any different than what LaGarrette Blount, whom Oregon suspended for the entire season, did? Terrible. Just terrible. And how did the kid that was stomping on people’s heads keep his scholarship? This whole thing was a joke and all I can say is this: Tim Tebow would never sucker punch anyone…except the devil!
Hot List:
10. Matt Prater – Prater hit from 59-yards, in regulation, and 51-yards in overtime to lead the Broncos to victory over the Chicago Bears. Notice I didn’t say Tim Tebow. (Damn!)
9. Tottenham HotSpur – This team has been putting together an amazing run at the books and gamblers have barely noticed. For those of us savvy enough to see the value in soccer betting, take a peek at the English Premier League (soccer) and check out the Spurs. They are currently 10-1-1 in their last 12 matches.
8. College Coaches Switching Teams – Did anyone see Charlie Weis at halftime of the Kansas/Ohio State men’s basketball game last weekend? Man, he is in some rough shape. Keep an eye on bowl teams that switched coaches or will be doing so very soon. Arizona St., Houston, Illinois, Ohio St., North Carolina, Penn St., Southern Miss, Texas A&M, UCLA, Toledo, and Arkansas St. all fall into this category.
7. The NFL ‘Under’ – Over the last 60 days of the NFL season the ‘under’ is 73-55. That is quite a change from the first two weeks of the year. Looks like most teams used the first two regular season weeks as training camps for the defenses before they dug in for the long haul.
6. Rob Gronkowski – This beast just set the NFL record for most touchdowns in the season by a tight end at 15. Even better is he has three games left on the season. He has been unstoppable over the course of this season. But can he play defense?
5. Syracuse Orange Men’s Basketball – Ladies and Gentlemen, I give you, The No. 1 ranked team in the NATION! Boom!
4. NBA – I can’t explain it, but I am excited about preseason opening night this weekend, and sitting in front of my TV on Christmas watching some NBA hoops. It will be interesting to see just how strong teams come out of the gate with a shortened season. Memphis and Chicago, both young teams, were ATS darlings last season, going a combined 101-60-3 ATS.
3. Maurice Jones-Drew – I just have to continue to give this guy credit. He has kept my fantasy team afloat all season. The diminutive Jags back scored four times this weekend as Jacksonville hammered Tampa Bay, 41-14. That gives Jones-Drew 1,570 yards from scrimmage (NFL-leading 1,222 rushing yards) and 10 touchdowns on the year.
2. Denver Broncos – Look, at this point there is just no reason to doubt it. Just ride the gravy train. Who cares how or why this team continues to cover the spread? Let’s just keep getting paid and let people keep believing that this is the first run like this that we’ve ever seen in the NFL.
1. Hot/Cold List – Check back next week for more.
