March Madness Brackets Strategy: Reseeding the Brackets
by Nicholas Tolomeo - 3/15/2011
The NCAA Selection Committee does not have the luxury of seeding every team like it deserves to be seeded. The four best teams are usually the No. 1 seeds. The worst four teams are playing in the play-in games. But in between that the selection committee has to juggle teams to avoid regular-season rematches and potential conference showdowns in the second round all while taking major consideration to the location of the game. What this means is that rarely are teams assigned their true seed.
For my March Madness brackets strategy I like to pretend I am on the selection committee but without all those restriction. My seeds only deal with talent of the team and potential in the tournament. Here are my reseeded teams, region by region. My adjusted seed is listed first with their actual seed after the team in parentheses.
East Region
1) Ohio State (1)
2) Kentucky (4)
3) Syracuse (3)
4) North Carolina (2)
5) Washington (7)
6) West Virginia (5)
7) George Mason (8)
8) Xavier (6)
9) Marquette (11)
10) Georgia (10)
11) Villanova (9)
12) Clemson (12)
13) Indiana State (14)
14) Princeton (13)
15) UAB (12)
16) Texas-San Antonio (16)
17) Long Island (15)
18) Alabama State (16)
This region is ridiculously tough. Kentucky may be the best No. 4 seed of all time. Ohio State is the top overall seed. North Carolina and Syracuse are obvious championship contenders. West Virginia went to the Final Four last year. Nobody wants to play Washington. George Mason might be this year’s George Mason. Xavier and Villanova are two of the most battle-tested teams in the tournament. The region does have its drawbacks, however. UAB is the worst at-large selection ever. Alabama State is one of the top five worst tournament teams ever. Long Island would be the worst team in any other region. This region features two, yes two, play-in games.
Southeast
1) Pitt (1)
2) Kansas State (5)
3) Wisconsin (4)
4) Florida (2)
5) St. Johns (6)
6) BYU (3)
7) Old Dominion (9)
8) Butler (8)
9) UCLA (7)
10) Michigan State (10)
11) Belmont (13)
12) Utah State (12)
13) Gonzaga (11)
14) Wofford (14)
15) UC-Santa Barbara (15)
16) UNC-Asheville (16)
17) Arkansas-Little Rock (16)
This is as goofy of a region as you will find. Pitt should have the easiest path to the Final four out of everyone. Florida is the worst No. 2 seed of all time. St. Johns is without DJ Kennedy. BYU is without sex boy. Wisconsin and Kansas State could easily lose their first round games. There are so many question marks in this region, but the only thing we know is that Arkansas-Little Rock is the worst team in the region and Pitt is the best. The difference between the reseeded second seed and the reseeded 13 seed is about four total points. The region is that balanced.
West
1) Duke (1)
2) Connecticut (3)
3) Texas (4)
4) San Diego State (2)
5) Missouri (11)
6) Arizona (5)
7) Michigan (8)
8) Cincinnati (6)
9) Tennessee (9)
10) Temple (7)
11) Oakland (13)
12) Bucknell (14)
13) Memphis (12)
14) Penn State (10)
15) Northern Colorado (15)
16) Hampton (16)
I have serious issues with Connecticut, Texas and San Diego State, but those three teams had to be in some kind of order behind Duke, the clear No. 1. San Diego State lost to BYU twice. They really didn’t play anyone else. Texas and Connecticut could literally lose to ANYONE in the tournament. Oakland is upset hungry. Penn State and Memphis are awful and already peaked this year. Do not discount No. 11 seed Missouri as a legitimate Elite Eight contender. The gap between Duke and Connecticut to anyone else is considerable in this region. It is tough to see anyone escaping the West besides the Blue Devils.
Southwest
1) Kansas (1)
2) Purdue (3)
3) Louisville (4)
4) Notre Dame (2)
5) Georgetown (6)
6) Vanderbilt (5)
7) Illinois (9)
8) Florida State (10)
9) Texas A&M (7)
10) UNLV (8)
11) USC (11)
12) Richmond (12)
13) Akron (15)
14) VCU (11)
15) Morehead State (13)
16) Saint Peter’s (14)
17) Boston University (16)
Bags fly free in the Southwest Region. The more you look at this bracket it looks like Kansas and Purdue vs. the Big East. I don’t care what Notre Dame did during the regular season, this is March and the Irish do not win in March unless it is the NIT. Louisville is the most dangerous Big East team in the tournament aside from Pitt. Georgetown is a wild card. Akron is the best No. 15 seed and it has the best shot at a 15/2 upset. Illinois and Florid State deserved better than 9 and 10 seeds respectively. This region literally has eight teams capable of winning it from Kansas all the way to Florida State.
