Las Vegas Week 1 College Football Betting Recap
by Vegas Sports Informer - 9/6/2011
What gets bet in Vegas doesn’t stay in Vegas because I inform the public what really goes down in Sin City. Every football weekend I will report what happened in the Vegas sports books, because that’s pretty much where I live during the months of September through April. I will inform the betting public of the good and the bad in the sports books and I will be reporting what gamblers are saying when they are waiting to wager their plays.
Sometimes listening is half the battle when you are deciding who to place your bet on. l believe if the public was correct 50 percent of the time all sports books in Vegas would shut down (If I had a dollar every time I heard “this team is easily going to cover this game,” I wouldn’t have to bet for the rest of my life).
Week No. 1 in college football is in the books, and what a weird weekend it was. It was good to see the Las Vegas sports books busy again, and all the books smelled like fresh cut parlay cards were in the air. The crowds were betting early because of the four-day Labor Day weekend, and college football started off this week on Thursday with six games on the betting schedule. NFL Preseason was on the board as well on Thursday, but the public threw away the preseason NFL sheets because the college kids ruled the day and the weekend of pigskin. Here is what I heard all Labor Day weekend in the Las Vegas sports book:
- Weather: Two games don’t go the official gambling time (55 minutes), and both games get refunded. Michigan easily could have covered against Western Michigan and West Virginia was on their way to covering against Marshall. But, again, both games get refunded! I was happy because I had Western Michigan +14 over Michigan. Love that rule!
- Thursday was about the UNLV offense being able to run against the Wisconsin defense, and, of course, the back door cover UNLV earned against the -35.5 home favorite Badgers.
- Thursday also produced a come-from-behind Syracuse team that covered in OT after being down pretty much the whole game.
- What a great game on Friday night with TCU on the road at Baylor. Baylor wins and the Las Vegas books lose on the side but won on the total.
- Saturday had upsets like Northwestern over Boston College, South Florida over Notre Dame, LSU over Oregon, and the big one that not too many people know about is Sacramento State over Oregon State. Could Notre Dame be overrated AGAIN? The bright side for the bookies of LSU beating Oregon is that the books cleaned up on the Tigers.
- Close calls on Saturday: USC only beating Minnesota by two points and Purdue beating Middle Tennessee St by three points. About USC, they should be happy that Notre Dame and Michigan have struggled in the past couple of years because USC could be just as overrated like these two schools.
- Sunday was pretty much a bore in the books as I saw more baseball betting then the two football games on the betting board. I, on the other hand, was betting the WNBA and Del Mar horse racing!
Overall a good weekend for us as we had a winning weekend in the first week of college and the books in Vegas had a winning weekend. Again, great to see the Vegas books filled with bettors and next weekend is the first weekend of the NFL season. Also, remember that this weekend is the 10-year anniversary of Sept. 11. We shall never forget!
