College Basketball Picks: Big Monday Odds and Predictions

Big East
West Virginia (16-8) at No. 13 Syracuse (20-6)

West Virginia vs. Syracuse Odds
Syracuse –5
Total: 133.5
The Carrier Dome has been a house of horrors for West Virginia and Big Monday has not been so kind either. West Virginia is 1-4 in its last four Big Monday games and just last week the Mountaineers fell to rival Pitt, 71-66, in Morgantown. West Virginia sure wishes their next Big Monday showdown this week would be in Morgantown and not Syracuse’s Carrier Dome. The Orange have won their last six in a row against West Virginia in the Carrier Dome.
Lately, though, the Carrier Dome has not necessarily been home sweet home for Syracuse. The Orange have lost their last three at home. Those losses were to Villanova, Seton Hall and Georgetown, and none of the games were particularly close, including a 90-68 beat down at the hands of Seton Hall.
Syracuse needs to get back on track in the worst way. It has tripped up while running the gauntlet that is the Big East regular season. Syracuse has lost six of eight, an almost unheard of stretch for a Jim Boeheim coached team.
Syracuse has been dogged by horrendous free-throw shooting (64-percent, that ranks 293rd in the country). The West Virginia offense has been just as woeful, but the Mountaineers are playing some of the best defense in the Big East and they have more than held their own on the road in the Big East. West Virginia owns road wins at Cincinnati, DePaul and Georgetown in the conference.
College Basketball Picks for Big Monday: West Virginia vs. Syracuse Predictions
Syracuse has won six of its last seven against West Virginia, including three in a row. Big Monday has not been a kind venue for West Virginia, Syracuse has presented plenty of matchup problems, and add on top of that the Carrier Dome and it could be a long Valentine’s Day for West Virginia. The play is Syracuse giving the points.
Big 12
No. 2 Kansas (24-1) at Kansas State (16-9)
9 p.m. ET
Kansas vs. Kansas State Odds
Kansas -3.5
Total: 147
With Ohio State losing on Saturday, the debate for who is the No. 1 team in the country will begin to rage on. On Monday night in Manhattan, the Kansas Jayhawks will get their chance to speak their case as to why they should be the top-ranked team moving forward.
And Big Monday against in-state rival Kansas State gives the Jayhawks the perfect platform to state their case. Kansas’ sensational freshman guard Josh Selby is questionable for Monday night’s game, but Kansas has been fine without him, easily winning three in a row without Selby.
This rivalry has been about as one-sided as it gets. Kansas is 9-2 ATS in its last 11 meetings in Manhattan and they are 20-6 ATS in the last 26 meetings between the two teams. Kansas has won seven in a row against the Wildcats, including a three-game sweep last season. If not for Michael Beasley arriving in Kansas State for his one season, this rivalry has lacked much drama.
College Basketball Picks for Big Monday: Kansas vs. Kansas State Predictions
Kansas ran the Wildcats out of the gym back on Jan. 29 in a 90-66 win. Kansas State has been horrific on the road this season, but it has held its own at home where it owns wins over Nebraska, Baylor, Texas Tech and Virginia Tech. But Kansas is none of those teams.
The Jayhawks are the best shooting team in the nation (52.3 percent) and their team field-goal defense ranks 12th in the country. That is a lethal combination. On top of that Big Monday is where Kansas has played its best basketball. It is 20-7 ATS in its last 27 Monday games. The play here is Kansas giving the points.
