NFL Survivor Pool Picks and Advice: Week 17
by Matt Severance - 12/29/2010
Hard to believe another NFL regular season and Survivor Pool season is already at its end, so this will be my final advice column of the season. Hopefully you have either cashed in by now or will by Sunday night. Of course I will be back with this Survivor Pool Picks column next season - assuming of course there is a 2011 NFL season (i.e. labor issues).

If there was one result in the NFL last week that might have jumped up and bitten either you or your Survivor Pool competitors, it had to be the Detroit Lions going to Tampa Bay and upsetting the Bucs, 23-20, in overtime. It was Detroit's first road win since Week 8 of the 2007 season, snapping its NFL-record 26-game road losing streak. The Lions also won back-to-back games for the first time since that 2007 season. I'm telling you, they are going to be good next year.

NFL Survivor Pool Picks and Advice: Week 15

It was a pretty chalky Week 14 in the NFL, so there were probably not a lot of eliminations in your Survivor Pool. That is unless you fell into the trap that is the New York Jets at home against the Miami Dolphins or if you took Green Bay at Detroit in a game the Packers essentially lost the minute Aaron Rodgers left with a concussion.

We are at the final quarter-pole of the NFL's regular season, so if you are still alive in your Survivor Pool - and why would you be reading this if you aren't? - then you can no doubt almost smell that money by now. By this point in the year you can usually tell which teams have quit and will begin looking toward next season.

Last week was fairly chalk in terms of upsets in the NFL, so hopefully your Survivor Pool in ongoing. Things really start to get interesting after Thanksgiving because some teams pack it in and start to play the young kids - but sometimes those kids can spring an upset because they, unlike the veterans on a horrible team like a Carolina, still want to impress the coaching staff, etc.

We're here a little early this week for the Survivor Pool picks column since there's a football feast arriving on Turkey Day, although thank God the NFL added that third Thanksgiving game a few weeks ago because otherwise we would have subjected to just the lousy Lions and Cowboys hosting the early games - albeit against Super Bowl contenders in Patriots and Saints, respectively. The night game looks like another mismatch as the Jets host the sinking Bengals.

NFL Survivor Pool Picks and Advice: Week 11

Last week I listed the New York Giants hosting Dallas as my top choice even though I always say you should never do a rivalry game and I was a bit concerned that Dallas might have a burst of energy under new coach Jason Garrett - and that's exactly what happened as the Cowboys pretty well dominated the Giants. I literally had listed Tampa Bay against Carolina at the top of my "Have No Fear" list, but then switched that game with Cowboys-Giants at the last second.

The loyal readers of this column know that I was bounced from my Survivor Pool a few weeks ago when the New Orleans Saints lost at home to the Cleveland Browns - which doesn't look so bad now after Cleveland just beat New England, too. But my pool allows buybacks so we have kept this column going.

There were plenty of upsets in the NFL last week that may have blown up your Survivor Pool competition: Jacksonville winning Dallas (although is it really an upset when anyone beats Dallas?); Miami winning in Cincinnati - Fins now 4-0 on the road; Packers blanking the Jets in New York; Bucs winning in Arizona.

Of course, the Cleveland Browns upset the team I recommended as my top choice, the Saints, in New Orleans. #*@#&!#&! And I even wrote a few weeks ago that the champs were too inconsistent to choose, but I just couldn't resist the lure of them at home against a freaking rookie quarterback making his second NFL start. Drew Brees suddenly looks ordinary at best without a running game.

OK, I'm starting to get a bit cocky when it comes to Survivor Pool advice, because my first six top selections of the year haven't come even remotely close to losing through Week 6. And of course, I just jinxed myself in Week 7 by typing that. Let's hope not.

NFL Survivor Pool Picks and Advice: Week 6
by Matt Severance - 10/14/2010
Well, it's Week 6 in the NFL and thus obviously in our Survivor Pool picks, and for those of you who have followed this column for the past few years may remember this is the week I went out two years ago, which still leaves a bad taste in my mouth (stupid Redskins).

Last week my top recommendation was the San Diego Chargers, and they crushed the pathetic Arizona Cardinals, 41-10, holding the Cards to all of 10 first downs and 134 total yards. If for some reason you didn't follow my San Diego advice, I also recommended New Orleans over Carolina (a too-close 16-14 Saints victory - they are now 0-4 ATS this season, by the way) and Green Bay over Detroit (again, a much closer game than expected, but a Packers win).

NFL Survivor Pool Picks and Advice: Week 4
by Matt Severance - 9/30/2010
I'm thinking your Survivor Pool was pretty static last week as there really weren't any big upsets in Week 3 in the NFL. New England over Buffalo, Baltimore over Cleveland and Minnesota over Detroit were the three big favorites last week - I recommended the Ravens as my top choice - and all three won pretty easily. Perhaps the New Orleans Saints losing to Atlanta got a few people, along with perhaps the Rams over the Redskins (St. Louis' first home win in nearly two years), Seahawks over the Chargers and the Bears over the Packers. But I wouldn't call any of those huge upsets and the Saints were the only home team among that group to fall.

NFL Survivor Pool Picks and Advice: Week 3
by Matt Severance - 9/23/2010
It's been a breeze through two weeks in your NFL Survivor Pool if you have followed my advice. In Week 1 I suggested the Tennessee Titans, and their game with Oakland was never in doubt. Last week I recommended the Green Bay Packers, and they were way too much for the wretched Buffalo Bills - I'm thinking the Bills might be the Lions or Rams of a few years' past as in they will be the team that players pick against nearly every week.

NFL Survivor Pool Picks and Advice: Week 2
by Matt Severance - 9/15/2010
Hopefully you followed my Survivor Pool advice in Week 1 and didn't fall into the trap that was the Chargers at Chiefs game on Monday night by picking San Diego as your survivor team. The New Arrowhead Stadium was rocking and Kansas City ended a five-game skid to its AFC West rivals with a 21-14 win despite totaling all of nine first downs and gaining less than 200 total yards.

Welcome back to the weekly Survivor Pool advice column, where hopefully we can have the success of 2009 (knocked out in Week 15) instead of 2008 (Week 6). You won't usually see this column quite so early in the week (the more time to find out about injuries), but with the Vikings and Saints opening the season on Thursday night in an NFC Championship Game rematch, here we are.

NFL Survivor Pool: Advice, Tips and Strategy
by Matt Severance - 8/27/2010
Enjoy those NFL Survivor Pools this year because a few big NFL events are likely on the horizon that will change them. Of course the first is the presumed labor stoppage that seems imminent for next year - I don't think there will be scab players in 2011 so you'll have to live with a college football survivor pool of some sort (can't say I've been in one of those yet). Although the NFL certainly should get going at some point next year, but I wouldn't count on Week 1.

Advice and Tips for NFL Survivor Pools
by Trevor Whenham
The best part of the NFL is that there are hundreds of different ways to get some action and hopefully make a bit of money. You can play your basic point spreads, totals or money line, but there is so much more out there. Everybody knows somebody who is running some sort of pool or fantasy league, and if you follow football closely you'll have an edge over the long term over the people who pick teams based on mascot name or uniform color. One of the most difficult but entertaining and potentially lucrative ways to put your money in play during the pro football season is in an NFL suicide pool - also known as an NFL eliminator pool or a NFL survivor pool. This season at Doc's Sports we will provide week-by-week suicide pool advice to give you the best chance to win the pot.
