College Basketball National Championship Free Picks - Duke-Butler Predictions
by Alan Matthews - 4/5/2010
I don't know about you, but I believe today is the best sports day of the year because you have baseball's Opening Day to go along with the end of college basketball's season. Shoot, this year we've even got Tiger Woods facing the full media for the first time. The TV will be on all day!

Final Four Free Picks: Duke-West Virginia Predictions
by Trevor Whenham - 4/1/2010
A lot of people are portraying the Duke - West Virginia Final Four game as a de facto national championship. I'm not sure that I but into that theory, but it's definitely the game with the teams that were more expected to be here and don't seem quite as out of place in a Final Four. Here's how the contest, which happens Saturday at 8:45 pm ET from Indianapolis, sets up and here are my Final Four free picks (Duke-West Virginia predictions):

Guard Play Overrated in Final Four
by Nicholas Tolomeo - 4/1/2010
Of all the beliefs this year's Final Four will prove wrong, such as a team from the Horizon League not being able to make a Final Four, or teams with injured star players having no chance to win it all or that Coach K and Duke have lost their game, the one notion that can finally be forgotten is the one that states, "the team with the best guard play will win the tournament."

Final Four Free Picks: Michigan State-Butler Predictions
by Trevor Whenham - 3/31/2010
The Final Four contest between Michigan State and Butler is, to say the least, unlikely. It's the first ever appearance for Butler, and the first time that two No. 5 seeds have even made the Final Four in the same year, never mind played each other. Here's how the contest, which happens Saturday at 6 p.m. EST from Indianapolis, sets up:

Final Four Coaches
by Trevor Whenham - 3/31/2010
Despite the lack of NBA Draft lottery talent and the biggest-named teams, there are still a whole lot of reasons why this Final Four is at least as interesting as several we have seen before. At or near the top of that list is the set of coaches that are leading their teams into Indianapolis. There's a bit of everything here - from the legends to the future star. I mean, just look at these guys:

Final Four Handicapping: Butler's Home Court Advantage
by Trevor Whenham - 3/30/2010
The fact that Butler is playing the Final Four on their home court is, with good reason, one of the most discussed aspects of this strange Final Four that looms just on the horizon. This is a reasonably unique situation - the last time a team played at home was UCLA in 1972. Though the Bruins won it all that year, that's hardly a precedent given how much the tournament has grown since then.

Final Four Totals Betting Trends
by Aaron Smith - 3/30/2010
It has been a couple of crazy weeks of basketball, which is exactly what one would expect from March Madness. If you have even two of your teams left on your bracket, then you have done a brilliant job in a year where upsets have turned the college basketball tournament upside down. Now that we have the Final Four all set, I wanted to take a close look at totals trends for each of the teams in the Final Four.

Free College Basketball Picks: NIT Semifinals Preview
by Nicholas Tolomeo - 3/29/2010
There is another Final Four in mens' college basketball and it is set to start Tuesday night at Madison Square Garden. This year's NIT semifinals feature two teams from the Atlantic 10, Dayton and Rhode Island, one team from the SEC, Mississippi, and last year's defending NCAA National Champions, North Carolina of the ACC.

March Madness Handicapping: Can Lower Seeds Keep Going?
by Trevor Whenham - 3/25/2010
I can't say that the hype surrounding the four teams ranked ninth or lower that made the Sweet 16 is unprecedented, but it certainly is intense. You don't have to look too hard to find members of the media that are in love with one of the four teams and their chances of continued success.

Sweet 16 Betting: Experience is Key
by Nicholas Tolomeo - 3/24/2010
The word experience gets a lot of play around this time of year in college basketball. March Madness has a very unique format that sees teams playing games in rapid succession and you are dealing with the psyche of 19 and 20 year olds, so experience is one of the best things a team can have in its corner.

Sweet 16 Free Betting Picks
by Nicholas Tolomeo - 3/23/2010
Sixteen teams remain and the madness of March hits a temporary hiatus to allow everyone to catch their breath after four days of non-stop action. The gap between the second round of the NCAA Tournament and the round of 16 also gives bettors more time to break down games and pay attention to point spread movements.

March Madness Handicapping: the Aftermath of Kansas Upset
by Trevor Whenham - 3/23/2010
Northern Iowa did more than just pull off a miracle on Saturday night - they also exploded a stunning number of March Madness brackets. The stats are beyond belief - 98 percent of the 4.8 million people who filled in a bracket on ESPN.com had Kansas in the Sweet 16, almost 60 percent had them in the Final Four, and more than 40 percent had them winning it all.

Sweet 16 Bracket Predictions
by Trevor Whenham - 3/22/2010
For a lot of people and their brackets - a whole lot this year - the first weekend of the tournament was like a nuclear bomb for their hopes in the office pool. If they were like more than 40 percent of people who filled out March Madness brackets, including me, then they had Kansas winning it all, but Northern Iowa and Ali Farokhmanesh destroyed that.

Free March Madness Picks: Sweet 16 Money Line Underdogs
by Trevor Whenham - 3/22/2010
My bracket didn't go particularly well last weekend - like everyone else I had Kansas winning it all, so now I have to rely on a Butler upset of Syracuse to have any chance at all of success. While I didn't have any success there, what has been going well so far in this tournament has been picking out profitable upsets on the money line.

College Basketball Championship Futures Betting: Possible Values
by Aaron Smith - 3/22/2010
Is there really any doubt why it is called March Madness? If anyone wondered before, I think they have their answer now after a wild first weekend of stunning upsets that turned March Madness brackets into blobs of red ink and turned unknown teams and players into household names. It's all part of what I believe is the best tournament in all of sports. Every team has a chance to make their mark on history, and this year already plenty of them have taken advantage of that opportunity.

March Madness Handicapping: Conference Breakdowns
by Nicholas Tolomeo - 3/22/2010
The Big East was the dominant conference in college basketball, the Pac-10 was having perhaps the worst year of any major college basketball conference ever and this was a week year for the mid-majors overall. Or at least that was the thinking heading into the NCAA Tournament on Thursday. Four days later and 48 games of basketball later, things have certainly changed.

Free March Madness Picks - Money Line Underdogs for Sunday
by Trevor Whenham - 3/20/2010
The first round of the NCAA Tournament was great to watch, and it was really great from a betting perspective - especially if you like to be on underdogs. The first time I set out to write an article picking betting underdogs that were worthy of support I ended up with six winners in eight games and a very tidy profit. That's more than enough reason to do the same thing in the second round.

March Madness Sunday Preview
by Trevor Whenham - 3/20/2010
Maybe it's just because Thursday's games set the bar so high, but Friday's NCAA tournament action was a letdown. There was very little drama, few upsets, and not that many games that were interesting until the end. The Cornell upset of Temple should have been a highlight because it was an impressive upset, but that game was over as quickly as most of the rest.

Saturday March Madness Preview
by Trevor Whenham - 3/19/2010
Thursday's first day of March Madness was everything that we have come to expect from the tournament. It was brilliant. Almost every game was tight. Three went into overtime. Seven games were won by the lower seeded teams, and four of those would qualify as significant upsets. It had drama and intrigue and excitement. It was exhausting. Here's hoping that the 16 teams that survived Thursday's games can play games that are half as exciting on Saturday when they hit the court again. Here's a look at Saturday's eight second round games:

March Madness Bracket Predictions: Midwest Region
by Robert Ferringo - 3/17/2010
The Midwest Region is by far the most difficult region in the NCAA Tournament bracket. It's the most difficult to make predictions in and its going to be the most difficult to win. Eight coaches in this region have been to the Final Four, seven coaches have been in the national championship game and four of the headmen have NCAA championship rings.

March Madness Bracket Predictions: West Region
by Robert Ferringo - 3/17/2010
The top seed just lost one of its most critical pieces. The No. 2 seed is a program with no pedigree and a team with an unimpressive non-conference resume. The No. 3 seed is plenty shaky and is the shell of a team that couldn't get it done last season. The No 4 doesn't play any defense and is barely favored in its first round game and the No. 5 is an overrated mid-major with zero wins over top-notch BCS clubs in the last two years. And those are the best teams in this region.

March Madness Odds: Some Soft First Round Numbers
by Nicholas Tolomeo - 3/17/2010
Seeing lesser-ranked teams being favored is nothing new to people who follow college basketball point spreads. During the regular season the hostile environment of a college basketball arena is usually enough to warrant a home standing unranked team being favored over a ranked team.

March Madness Handicapping: Predicting the No. 12 Over No. 5 Upset
by Matt Severance - 3/17/2010
You hear it every year: Take at least one No. 12 seed over a No. 5 in the first round of your NCAA Tournament bracket. So how often does it happen? Since the tournament expanded to 48 teams in 1980, which first created No. 12 seeds, those teams are 41-79 in first-round games against No. 5s. Since the 2001 tournament, No. 12 seeds have taken 18 of 36 matchups from No. 5 seeds. Last year, three of four No. 12s pulled off the trick.

March Madness Betting: Ranking the Conferences
by Trevor Whenham - 3/17/2010
Conferences are crucial throughout the regular season, but they really don't mean much once the tournament starts. Still, there are a couple of days for us to kill between now and the start of tournament play, so we have to find ways to kill that time without going crazy - and ranking the six major conferences based on their tournament strength and likelihood of tournament success. Without further ado:

March Madness Betting: Possible 'Cinderella' Teams
by Aaron Smith - 3/17/2010
It happens every year during March Madness: there is always that Cinderella squad that steals the spotlight and very few people see it coming. Part of the reason the March Madness is so great is that upsets occur quite often.

March Madness Bracket Predictions: South Region
by Robert Ferringo - 3/16/2010
A story that's bouncing around the bobblehead media discusses how Duke was given the easiest bracket and the easiest road to the Final Four as some sort of conspiracy by CBS to juice up their ratings for March Madness and the NCAA Tournament. Notorious scumbag Jason Whitlock was one of the first to put that thought out into the ether and Colin Cowherd then took it and ran with it on his ESPN radio show. So now apparently this is a story.

March Madness Bracket Predictions: East Region
by Robert Ferringo - 3/16/2010
My March Madness bracket prediction for the East Region: a whole lot of people with their face buried squarely in the lap of John Wall, John Calipari and the rest of the Kentucky Nation. But what they don't realize (and I'll come back to this with another story tomorrow) is that Kentucky doesn't have a chance in hell in cutting down the nets and winning the NCAA Tournament.

March Madness Betting Strategies: Reseeding the Brackets
by Nicholas Tolomeo - 3/16/2010
Before every NCAA Tournament I like to reseed the regions and then go about making my picks and filling out my brackets and as part of my March Madness betting strategy. Sometimes the seeds match up, but usually they are drastically different. Here are new seeds, region by region with a brief description of why teams rose or fell. These seeds to do not account for a team's "body of work" this season but rather how you would rank them based on their overall talent taking into account momentum, coaching, experience and health. My adjusted seed is listed first with their actual seed after the team in parentheses.

Free March Madness Picks: Potential First-Round Upsets
by Trevor Whenham - 3/16/2010
My favorite part of the NCAA Tournament is the same as everyone else - trying to decode the March Madness bracket to try to win a pool or two. My second favorite part, though, is betting underdogs on the money line. We know that upsets are a big part of the tournament - there are an average of 16 every year. The money line is a great way to take maximum advantage of those upsets to (hopefully) turn a profit. Here's a look at eight games at even money or better that seem attractive in my eyes - these are free March Madness picks to play on the money line:

March Madness Brackets Help: Easiest Paths to Final Four
by Trevor Whenham - 3/16/2010
There is no such thing as an easy path through the NCAA Tournament. To cut down the nets in Indianapolis this year a team will have to win six straight games against increasingly difficult competition that have been aiming for this tournament since before the season began. That being said, the road is a lot easier on paper for some teams than others. Here's a look at four teams with comparatively easy paths to glory:

March Madness Brackets Advice: Hardest Paths to Final Four
by Trevor Whenham - 3/16/2010
The NCAA Tournament Selection Committee has one of the hardest jobs on the planet. No matter what they do every year they are going to face endless amounts of criticism. Trying to fit 65 teams in to a bracket and making sure that they are all where they belong is almost an impossible job. Still, some years they do a better job than others, and this year wasn't one of their best.

March Madness Betting Trends - NIT Predictions
by Trevor Whenham - 3/16/2010
In all the excitement and anticipation surrounding the NCAA Tournament, it's easy to forget that there is another tournament that actually starts a couple of days before the big dance - one that actually used to be the most prestigious one. The NIT may now be just the place where teams that aren't good enough to make the real tournament play, but it's still provide plenty of betting opportunities, and anything that you can bet on can't be all bad.

March Madness Betting: CBI Tournament Predictions
by Nicholas Tolomeo - 3/16/2010
There is another lesser-known tournament out there that gets to pick teams from what is left of the field after the NCAA Tournament and NIT tournament get their teams. The College Basketball Invitational is now in its third year. It is smaller than the 65-team NCAA Tournament and the 32-team NIT.

Odds of a Perfect March Madness Bracket
by Matt Severance - 3/16/2010
Chances are you have come across a promotion on some Web site that promises an awesome grand prize for anyone who can simply not miss a game in their March Madness bracket. So what are the chances of achieving that? Try one-in-9,223,372,036,854,775,808 -- this doesn't include the play-in game but the 63 games following. That's nine-plus quintillion (according to one story, some entomologists claim that's about the number of insects on Earth).

Free March Madness Contests - $5 Million for Perfect Bracket

Three brackets, three ways to win. That's what BetUS is offering site visitors in their new March Madness contest. In one of the most lucrative of all free March Madness contests, BetUS is offering up $5 million to anyone that can fill out a perfect bracket. This may seem like easy money to some, but the odds are actually 18.5 quintillion/1. We have never heard of quintillion, but we imagine this indicates it is a pretty big longshot.

2010 Final Four Predictions
by Trevor Whenham - 3/15/2010
The March Madness bracket is out, the games are around the corner, and speculation is running high. The Final Four is the most perfect format in sports, and trying to pick the winners correctly is the most haunting challenge there is. Every year at this time I set out to boldly make my Final Four predictions. Sometimes my predictions turn out to look pretty good. Other times, like last year, they are pretty much disastrous. I have a short memory, though, so I won't let those setbacks bother me. Here. then, are this year's version of my Final Four predictions:

Getting ready to fill in your March Madness bracket? Of course you are - everyone in the country fills in a bracket. College Basketball Handicapping: ACC Tournament Preview
by Robert Ferringo - 3/11/2010
The Duke Invitational Tournament begins today in Greensboro, N.C. Also known as the "ACC Tournament", the Duke Invitational is generally held as a coronation for the Blue Devils en route to an inflated seed in the NCAA Tournament. Duke has won eight of the last 11 ACC titles and have appeared in 10 of the last 13 conference championship games. And scoping a relatively weak ACC field I don't see how this weekend will be much different for the top-seeded Devils.

College Basketball Handicapping: SEC Tournament Preview
by Robert Ferringo - 3/10/2010
To suggest that the SEC East is just a little bit better than the SEC West this year might be a bit of an understatement. The top four teams in the East - Kentucky, Vanderbilt, Tennessee and Florida - went a perfect 24-0 this season against the six teams in the West. Overall the East sported a ridiculous 27-9 mark against its brethren out West. That is domination, pure and simple.

College Basketball Handicapping: WAC Tournament Preview
by Robert Ferringo - 3/10/2010
Looking around the college basketball landscape I can say that the WAC is one of the few conferences in the country that is actually better this year than it was last year. This league brought back 33 of 45 starters from last year and eight of 10 all-league performers, all along with 14 of their top 15 scorers and 13 of their top 15 rebounders.

NCAA Tournament Handicapping: The Battle for the No. 1 and No. 2 seeds
by Nicholas Tolomeo - 3/10/2010
Some teams will be looking for more than just winning their conference championship this week during college basketball's championship week. There are No. 1 and No. 2 seeds up for grabs. In the case of the No. 1 seeds, they are not exactly up for grabs as three teams have all but solidified their spot.

College Basketball Handicapping: Big 12 Tournament Preview
by Robert Ferringo - 3/9/2010
While the Big East is getting all of the love and attention for the mediocre teams that are playing their way into the NIT, the Big 12 currently sits as the best conference in college basketball. And we'll get to see this group go at it starting at 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday in Kansas City as the Big 12 Conference Tournament gets underway.

College Basketball Handicapping: Mountain West Conference Tournament

College Basketball Handicapping: Pac-10 Tournament Preview
by Matt Severance - 3/9/2010
This year's Pac-10 Tournament should in a way be more fascinating than any in recent memory because it's basically in the same boat as, say, the Horizon League or Sun Belt (or pick your mid-major conference) in that only the Pac-10 winner might reach the NCAA Tournament. That's how down the conference is this season - it ranks eighth in conference RPI behind the five other BCS conference as well as the Atlantic 10 and Mountain West.

College Basketball Handicapping: Atlantic 10 Tournament Preview
by Robert Ferringo - 3/9/2010
The Atlantic 10 Conference Tournament will be one of the more closely watched tourneys in the country this week as bubble teams from the major conferences sit around and sweat out how fellow bubblers Charlotte, Dayton and Rhode Island perform in Atlantic City this week. All three of those teams are presently on the outside looking in on the NCAA Tournament, but all three are also capable of making a significant run and potentially swiping a bid.

College Basketball Handicapping: Betting Conference Tournaments
by Trevor Whenham - 3/9/2010
The NCAA Tournament is so close that we can almost taste it. Before we can enjoy the perfect madness of March, though, we have to get through the rest of the conference tournaments, including all of the major conference tournaments. With the obvious exception of the Pac-10, where there doesn't seem to be any good teams, those major conference tournaments aren't likely to significantly change the perceptions of the teams at the top of the conferences - though they will settle some big bubble questions.

College Basketball Handicapping: Conference USA Tournament Preview
by Matt Severance - 3/8/2010
Thanks to John Calipari leaving Memphis for Kentucky, this year's Conference USA Tournament actually might have some drama. Under Coach Cal, Memphis was completely dominant in CUSA and had won the previous four conference tournaments. This year's Tigers may need to make it five in a row if they want to return to the Big Dance as they are squarely on the bubble of the NCAA Tournament.
