Bookmaker's Corner: Kentucky Derby Odds and Props
by Richard Gardner | Bodog Sportsbook Manager - 4/29/2010
The most exciting two minutes in sports goes this Saturday at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky and that means a big week of horse racing odds at Bodog’s online sportsbook.
As of Wednesday, Lookin At Lucky was the favorite horse, garnering 9/2 odds to win the 2010 Kentucky Derby. Not so lucky for Lookin At Lucky? It drew the inside post, which isn’t exactly the most advantageous draw against a full field of 20 horses. In fact, it was probably the worst draw possible for trainer Bob Baffert.
"Thank God I'd already eaten before I heard the draw,” said Baffert, adding that Looking At Lucky will have to get off to quite the start to overcome the unfortunate draw. "Plan A is to break well. Plan B is we're screwed.”
"He just can't catch a break, can he?” Baffert went on. “When people have the choice, number 1 or 20 are always the last to be chosen. It hits you but you have to deal with it.”
Sidney’s Candy, which oddly enough will start from the far outside, is the runner-up favorite at 15/2. A couple of weeks ago, Sidney’s Candy could’ve been had at 15/1. A few other horses that have seen their odds to win the Kentucky Derby fall in the past week or so are No. 17 Dublin – currently 14/1, down from 25/1 – and No. 13 Jackson Bend, from 36/1 to 14/1.
For what it’s worth, star trainer D. Wayne Lukas likes Dublin. "I'm pretty well loaded up,” Lukas said. “If he wins, I'll be trading in the car."
So far as other ways to bet on the Kentucky Derby are concerned, we’ve made odds for a number of head-to-head races (editor’s note: Doc’s Sports will have an article posted Saturday morning with free picks on some of these head-to-head matchups).
One of Bodog’s match races that seems to have drawn the bettors’ fancy is between the aforementioned Dublin and No. 4 Super Saver. Both horses are at 14/1 to win, but Dublin (-130) is the favorite over Super Saver (+100). For the record, Super Saver will be ridden by Calvin Borel, who has won two of the last three Derbys.
One Kentucky Derby prop wager that always gets good action before and after the Derby is the one that asks whether or not any horse will win the Triple Crown. Currently, “Yes” is at +600 with “No” at -1000.
The last Triple Crown winner was Affirmed, which pulled it off all the way back in 1978. Only 11 horses have ever won the Triple Crown.
