2010 Boise State Broncos Football Preview, Futures Odds and Predictions
by Aaron Smith - 8/2/2010
The Boise State Broncos burst onto the scene in 2006 with their amazing win over the Oklahoma Sooners in the Fiesta Bowl. At that point, many football fans saw them as the loveable underdog that everyone wanted to win. In the last few years, however, Boise State has established their football program as being one of the best in the nation. No doubt, some of those fans that jumped on the bandwagon in 2006 are now worried that Boise State is consistently better than their favorite team. These Broncos are for real, and they are definitely a legitimate BCS National Championship contender.
Head Coach Chris Peterson’s team returns 10 starters on both sides of the football from a team that went undefeated last year. The signature win was a 17-10 triumph in the Fiesta Bowl over a favored TCU team. The expectations are extremely high for this year, and the schedule is more difficult. If they are able to run the table again, it certainly is possible that they could play for the national title.
Boise State Football Offensive Preview
Kellen Moore is back for his junior season after racking up some of the most impressive numbers college football has ever seen in his sophomore campaign in 2009. Moore threw 39 touchdowns and just three interceptions last season. He is even getting a little bit of attention in the Heisman Trophy race, where he is listed at +1,700 on 5Dimes list of hopefuls.
The offense as a whole scored more than 42 points per game in 2009, and the only starter lost was on the offensive line. There really isn’t a weakness on this offense. The depth at tailback is second to none in the country with Jeremy Avery, D.J. Harper, and Doug Martin. The two best receivers in the Western Athletic Conference are Titus Young and Austin Pettis, and they both play for this Boise State squad. The skill positions are loaded with talent, and the line is solid in both run and pass blocking. This offense will certainly be one of the best in the country.
Boise State Football Defensive Preview
While everyone associates Boise State with shootout-type football games, this defensive unit is much better than most people realize. Boise State allowed just 17 points per game last year and this year’s version has some impressive depth all across the defense.
The defensive line is two deep across the board, and I would expect this unit to put more pressure on the quarterback this year. The linebackers may not be spectacular, but they are solid and know their roles well. The secondary has plenty of talent, but it will be interesting to see how well they can replace Kyle Wilson at the cornerback spot. Safety Jeron Johnson is a ball-hawk in the secondary, and he is able to clean up just about everything that comes near him. This defense is fast and supremely talented, though not quite on the same level as the offense.
Boise State Football Question Marks
The loss of Kyle Wilson will hurt this team, and they will need to have a solid replacement at the corner position. Wilson was also the punt returner for the Broncos, so they will lose his explosiveness in that area as well.
The linebackers aren’t quite as good as the rest of the defense at this point. This unit isn’t nearly as disruptive in the backfield as some of the best in the nation. The Broncos don’t have any star in this group, and when they play against the best teams in the land this could prove to a bit of a problem.
Boise State Football Futures Odds
The oddsmakers are definitely starting to respect the Broncos more as the years pass. Boise State is listed as the third favorite to win the BCS National Championship for college football futures at 5Dimes. The odds for them to win the title are currently set at +1,150. Boise State’s chances of finishing in the top five of the final USA Today poll are set at +120 on 5Dimes.
2010 Boise State Football Schedule - Key Games
The 2010 Boise State football schedule is much more difficult in the nonconference portion than it has been in the past few years. The first game of the year at FedEx Field against the Virginia Tech Hokies is probably their toughest test of the year. Oregon State could also be a difficult game at home on Sept. 25, but I believe Boise State will have too much offense for the Beavers. The conference schedule is quite easy once again, but if there is one game to watch, it’s the Friday Nov. 26 battle in Reno against Nevada. The 2010 Boise State football schedule is much more difficult than in past years, which should bode well for their BCS rankings if they win out.
2010 Boise State Football Predictions
I’m going to go out on a limb and say Boise State will lose their initial game against Virginia and then run the table the rest of the season. The Hokies running game could give them trouble, and I believe if anyone is going to beat Boise State it will be Virginia Tech. Kellen Moore will rack up amazing numbers, and this offense is liable to be ranked as the best in the entire country. I think Boise State will be one of the top five teams in the country at the end of the season.
