NFL Survivor Pool Picks: Week 17
by Matt Severance - 12/29/2009
It's hard to believe it's already the final week of the NFL season and thus my last Survivor Pool story of 2009. I hope my advice was helpful and that you get to begin the New Year with some extra cash in your pocket. Going out in Week 15 certainly beats losing in Week 6 like in 2008.

NFL Survivor Pool Picks: Week 16
by Matt Severance - 12/23/2009
Well, last week's Survivor Pool results were one of those glass half-full, glass half-empty deals. I recommended the Denver Broncos in Week 15, while admitting I wasn't really very confident in Denver against the Raiders (more so not that confident in the Broncos than any opponent).

NFL Survivor Pool Picks: Week 15

Have you cashed in yet? It's somewhat rare that Survivor Pools drag on to Week 15, but it of course depends on how many players you began with. If you have been following my advice and taking my top pick each week, you are still going.

NFL Survivor Pool Picks: Week 14
by Matt Severance - 12/9/2009
Week 13 almost was very, very good to those of you following my Survivor Pool advice. I warned heavily against taking the Saints last week (you didn't have that option if you have chosen my top recommendation each week), and New Orleans was incredibly fortunate to win in Washington. All the Skins needed was a chip-shot field goal to take a late two-score lead, but Shaun Suisham pushed the attempt wide right from 23 yards with 1:52 to play.

I don't know about you, but I'm counting my Survivor Pool money already. I know, you should never put the horse before the cart, but that cash sure would come in handy for a little Christmas shopping! Let's hope I didn't just jinx myself and those of you following my advice.

NFL Survivor Pool Picks: Week 12
by Matt Severance - 11/25/2009
Thank you, Chiefs. Thank you, Raiders. Here's guessing that Kansas City's upset of Pittsburgh and/or Oakland's surprise of Cincinnati last week certainly whittled down your competition in your NFL Survivor Pool.

NFL Survivor Pool Picks: Week 11
by Matt Severance - 11/18/2009
I warned against you picking Denver at Washington, Atlanta at Carolina and Dallas at Green Bay, and all three visiting favorites lost. I also said to stay away from Pittsburgh against Cincinnati, and the Bengals completed the season sweep.

NFL Survivor Pool Picks: Week 10
by Matt Severance - 11/11/2009
The Survivor Pools really start to get interesting this week, not only because you have made it to a double-digit week and are still kicking, but also because the NFL Network's Thursday package kicks off this week (Bears and 49ers) and the bye weeks are now all but over - just the Giants and Texans on the bye in Week 10, and then it's done.

NFL Survivor Pool Picks: Week 9
by Matt Severance - 11/4/2009
Week 8 in the NFL was another very chalk week of results. Maybe Carolina beating Arizona knocked a player or two out of your Suicide Pool, but that's the only game I would call truly surprising last week. I recommended the Chargers, and they beat Oakland for the 13th straight game.

NFL Survivor Pool Picks: Week 8
by Matt Severance - 10/28/2009
Last week was a definite chalk week in the NFL, with only two possible upsets likely to have affected anyone in your Suicide Pool: the Cardinals winning at the New York Giants and the Bills winning at Carolina.

NFL Survivor Pool Picks: Week 7
by Matt Severance - 10/21/2009
What is it with Week 6 and the Washington Redskins? Last year in Week 6, the Skins knocked me out of the Survivor Pool with a home loss to the dismal Rams. And then last week, Washington lost at home to the winless Chiefs. Thankfully, we didn't recommend the Redskins, whom we have already used in our 2009 Survivor Pool Picks. But there may have been a few folks in your pool who did play Washington last week and are now out.

NFL Survivor Pool Picks: Week 6
by Matt Severance - 10/14/2009
Last week we recommended the Eagles, and they had no trouble at all with the Tampa Bay Bucs. We also included the Giants, Steelers, Panthers and Ravens as five to "swear by" with only the Ravens losing. In the "scared by" category, we hit on three teams we warned you not to play on: the Patriots at Denver, the Bills against Cleveland and the Jets at Miami.

NFL Survivor Pool Picks: Week 5
by Matt Severance - 10/7/2009
Last week my top pick for your Survivor Pools was the Houston Texans, which is the first time I have recommended a below-.500 team so far in the two years I have been doing this column. But of course the Texans had no trouble with an Oakland offense that is the worst in the NFL in terms of yards per game.

NFL Survivor Pool Picks: Week 4

Let's just reiterate that the only thing that matters in a Survivor Pool is to advance. I throw out this disclaimer because other than recommending the Baltimore Ravens last week as the top choice, my advice was pretty shoddy. On to our Week 4 picks, which is the first week of several where byes are a factor. And it's one of those weeks where there appear to be a lot of fairly even matchups.

Those #&@*$#& Redskins! They almost knocked me out of my Survivor Pool for the second year in a row at home against the inept St. Louis Rams. Washington couldn't even manage a single touchdown against the Rams this time but did hang on for a 9-7 victory. Crisis averted!

I had my lead for this story all but written. I was watching the "Monday Night Football" opener this week, and it seemed a sure thing that the Buffalo Bills were going to upset the New England Patriots - just as I warned you might happen in last week's Survivor Pool story. No doubt a Pats' loss would have eliminated at least a few members of your pool, and I felt a small sense of superiority or at least sageness (that a word?) … and then Leodis McKelvin had a Leon Lett moment by trying to return a kickoff with less than two minutes left.

NFL Survivor Pool Rules
by Matt Severance - 8/27/2009
Yesterday here at Doc's, I wrote a very basic article for those beginners wondering how to run an NFL survivor pool this year. I suppose I am the unofficial expert on this subject currently on the site, as I was the survivor pool columnist in 2008 and will be back again this year giving my weekly advice.

Advice and Tips for NFL Survivor Pools
by Trevor Whenham
The best part of the NFL is that there are hundreds of different ways to get some action and hopefully make a bit of money. You can play your basic point spreads, totals or money line, but there is so much more out there. Everybody knows somebody who is running some sort of pool or fantasy league, and if you follow football closely you'll have an edge over the long term over the people who pick teams based on mascot name or uniform color. One of the most difficult but entertaining and potentially lucrative ways to put your money in play during the pro football season is in an NFL suicide pool - also known as an NFL eliminator pool or a NFL survivor pool. This season at Doc's Sports we will provide week-by-week suicide pool advice to give you the best chance to win the pot.
