NHL Betting: Colorado Avalanche One Of Biggest Surprises in Years
by Trevor Whenham - 11/11/2009
In my profession I end up making a lot of predictions, pronouncements and guesses. Some of them I am particularly proud of down the road, and others seem perfectly reasonable. Every so often, though, I make one that misses the boat so badly that I wish that I wish I could pretend that it never happened.

NHL Handicapping: Injury Woes
by Trevor Whenham - 11/5/2009
A team made up of the currently injured players in the NHL could beat pretty much any team in the league. Handily. And I'm not even kidding. Just look at the starting lineup - Ovechkin, Malkin, and Kovalchuk up front, Gonchar and Souray on defense, and Roberto Luongo on defense. It's not just the starting lineup that's impressive, either - the depth of injured stars would make an Olympic team drool - Spezza, Sedin, Gagne, Briere, Savard, Lucic, Toews, Franzen, Markov, Lehtonen. It goes on and on and on.

NHL Teams Starting in Europe
by Trevor Whenham - 10/7/2009
For the third year in a row, some NHL teams have began their season by playing games in Europe. This year, the ambitiously named NHL Premiere series took place in Stockholm and Helsinki on Oct. 2 and 3. The series featured three teams expected to make the playoffs out of the Central Division - the Chicago Blackhawks, Detroit Red Wings, and St. Louis Blues, and one team out of the Southeast - the Florida Panthers - that doesn't really scare anyone.

Stanley Cup Finals Preview: Teams Should Be Fresh Off Short Series
by Trevor Whenham - 05/29/2009
The Pittsburgh Penguins made very short work of the Carolina Hurricanes. In fact, they hardly looked like they had to break a sweat through much of their brief four-game series. A sweep can be a big advantage for a team in the grueling NHL playoffs. That advantage was quickly minimized by the Detroit Red Wings just one night later when they eliminated the Chicago Blackhawks in five relatively easy games.

Dogs Hold Value For NHL Game 2s
by Nicholas Tolomeo - 05/19/2009
Both opening games in the NHL conference finals went according to plan with the heavily favored Detroit Red Wings and Pittsburgh Penguins defending their respective home ices and taking an early 1-0 series lead.

NHL Betting Previews: Thursday Game 7 Predictions
by Nicholas Tolomeo - 05/13/2009
Early in the month it looked as if the top remaining seeds in each conference, the Boston Bruins in the East and the Detroit Red Wings in the West, were on the ropes and near elimination. Both top seeds have managed to bounce back, however, and force a deciding Game 7.

NHL Playoffs Over-Under Trends
by Nicholas Tolomeo - 05/13/2009
While the NHL playoffs have been playing "under" for the most part, knowing how often a certain team's games went "over" during the regular season will give you a good idea of which teams to back in the playoffs. The teams that have been enjoying the most success are the ones that played "over" routinely during the regular season.

NHL Playoffs: Betting the NHL Puck Line
by Nicholas Tolomeo - 05/11/2009
Betting on the puck line in hockey is about the same as betting on the run line in baseball. Wagering on your team to win by two or more goals shifts the odds drastically in your favor while taking the extra 1.5 goals does the opposite. The one major difference between the hockey and baseball is that there is no such thing as an empty net run in MLB.

NHL Playoffs Betting: Penguins-Capitals Predictions
by Nicholas Tolomeo - 05/01/2009
Thanks to a stunning last-second rally by the Carolina Hurricanes, the NHL will get the marquee matchup it was looking for when the No. 4 seed Pittsburgh Penguins and No. 2 seed Washington Capitals meet in the second round.

NHL Playoffs Predictions
by Trevor Whenham - 04/14/2009
The NHL playoffs are all set and about ready to get underway. Given the bruising intensity of this tournament, winning it is one of the biggest challenges in sports. This year's version is wide open, with no clear favorite and several legitimate contenders in each conference. Every top contender has a potentially fatal flaw, so you get the real sense that anything could happen.

NHL Playoffs Betting: Some Hot Props Predictions
by Matt Severance - 04/14/2009
The National Hockey League drops the puck on the Stanley Cup playoffs on Wednesday night, and the beauty of the NHL playoffs, as opposed to the NBA, is that the bottom teams can often upset the top teams.

NHL Betting: The Week's Biggest Stories
by Trevor Whenham - 04/14/2009
As we get ready to head into the NHL playoffs - one of the better tournaments in sports - there is an incredible number of storylines to get our minds around as we get ready to make some playoff cash. Here are 23 thoughts on my mind as we get ready for the second season, which starts on Wednesday and carries on well into June.

NHL Betting: The Week's Biggest Stories
by Trevor Whenham - 04/07/2009
With the playoffs just around the corner and a big portion of the playoff field set, it seems like a good time to take a frank assessment of each team that is either heading to the playoffs or trying to get there:

NHL Betting: The Week's Biggest Stories
by Trevor Whenham - 03/30/2009
The Colorado Avalanche are bad. Really, really, really bad. They have the second worst record in the league behind only the Islanders, but their play in the last couple of weeks has made it clear that no team has less going for them right now. They have lost their last seven games in a row, and they haven't managed to score more than two goals in any of those games.

NHL Betting: The Week's Biggest Stories
by Trevor Whenham - 03/23/2009
The Ottawa Senators are the hottest team in the NHL over the last 10 games. Unfortunately, by the time they figured out how to play they had already thrown their season away. Ottawa has lost just once in their last 10 games, but still find themselves seven points out of the last playoff spot with 10 games left to play. Their last win even moved them over the .500 mark for the first time since the fourth game of the season.

NHL Betting: The Week's Biggest Stories
by Trevor Whenham - 03/09/2009
The NHL trade deadline has passed, and it was a strange one. The trade action was very slow to get started, and though there were eventually almost as many deals as in recent years there weren't nearly as many big names with new addresses. Early-round draft picks were also more valued now than some years, as they didn't move much at all. Several teams got better now or into the future, but four did better than the rest.

NHL Betting: The Week's Biggest Stories
by Trevor Whenham - 03/02/2009
The Habs were too good to be playing as badly as they were over their last 15 games before this week - just three wins. They are finally showing their potential, having strung together wins in their last four games, and capping that streak with a win over league-leading San Jose. Unlike a lot of streaks, the reason for this one is pretty simple to pinpoint - they finally got some goaltending.

NHL Betting: Value Present in Pittsburgh
by Nicholas Tolomeo - 02/23/2009
In terms of teams that are hard to figure out, the Pittsburgh Penguins have been downright mystifying this season. The Penguins have two of the top scorers and young talents in the NHL, Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin, and are coming off a memorable run to the Stanley Cup Finals last season.

NHL Betting: The Week's Biggest Stories
by Trevor Whenham - 02/23/2009
Another week, another NHL coaching change. The NHL is getting to be more like the NBA in that regard. This time the victim is Tom Renney, the coach of the New York Rangers for the last five years. No replacement has been named yet. The Rangers have been in a freefall, and some sort of change was desperately needed. Make no mistake, though - this move will have absolutely no effect on this team.

2009 Stanley Cup Futures Odds and Predictions
by Trevor Whenham - 02/17/2009
We are well past halfway through the NHL season. The All-Star Game is over, and the true contenders have been separated from the real pretenders. Now is a very good time to look at the Stanley Cup futures for value. This year is still quite wide open as the top three teams - Detroit, San Jose, and Boston - have all shown signs of vulnerability at times.

NHL Betting: The Week's Biggest Stories
by Trevor Whenham - 02/16/2009
Washington's Mike Green set an impressive record this week when he became the first defenseman to score a goal in eight straight games. He had 10 goals over the streak to raise his season total to 22 with 28 assists. He's also a whopping +28, so he is the rare defenseman who can contribute offensively without ignoring his duties in his own end.

NHL Betting: The Week's Biggest Stories
by Trevor Whenham - 02/09/2009
Calgary is either a very hot team or a very cold one, and right now they are definitely in a cold phase. After winning 12 games in 15 tries, the team has lost four in a row. Not just that, but they have looked lousy doing it. Jarome Iginla is supposed to be a world-class sniper, and he could be Canada's captain at the Olympics next year, but he has just six goals in the last two months, and his play is consistently dull.

NHL Betting: The Week's Biggest Stories
by Trevor Whenham - 02/02/2009
Detroit has the most talent, depth, and experience in the league. That makes their current skid all the more baffling. The team has lost their last five games - a downturn that stretches onto both sides of the all-star break. To make matters worse, four of the games have been conference tilts, and three of those have been against opponents that Detroit should beat in their sleep - Phoenix, Columbus, and Dallas.

NHL Betting: The Week's Biggest Stories
by Trevor Whenham - 01/26/2009
With every passing year I became less and less sure of why we bother having all-star games, and this year's NHL version did nothing to change my opinion. The East won, 12-11, in a shootout, but the game was a total debacle. Defense wasn't in the vocabulary of any player on the ice, and the goaltenders were hung out to dry from the start.

NHL Betting: The Week's Biggest Stories
by Trevor Whenham - 01/19/2009
If you are a Penguins fan and you shed a tear on Wednesday night then you can't really be blamed. First, the Pens got manhandled by Alexander Ovechkin and the Capitals, and their two big stars didn't look nearly as good as Washington's one. Then, just as the loss was about to hit the books, Sidney Crosby limped off the ice with a knee injury.

NHL Betting: The Week's Biggest Stories

The New Jersey Devils are in playoff position, and they are likely to stay there. That doesn't mean that they don't need some help, though. Their offense isn't as deep as it could be behind Zach Parise and Patrik Elias, their special teams could be tightened up, and they could use some gritty toughness to keep opponents on edge.

Montreal won't win their division because they are stuck in a group with Boston, but they sit third in the conference and look to be a solid playoff team. This week made it clear, though, that they will only go as far as young goaltender Carey Price can take them.
