Conference Domination in Bowl Games
by Nicholas Tolomeo - 12/16/2009
With the structure of the current bowl system, college football fans are given a clear indication of how conferences truly stack up to one another. Bowl games are tied into deals with conferences to take a certain placed team and pit them against a certain placed team from another conference. It has been this way for years and, luckily for bettors, this may be the easiest way in all of sports betting to track trends.

2009 New Mexico Bowl Odds and Predictions
by Trevor Whenham - 12/11/2009
The 2009 NCAA football bowl season starts far from the heart of college football in Albuquerque, New Mexico, with the oh-so creatively named New Mexico Bowl. This is the fourth edition of this bowl game, and the second straight for Fresno State - the Bulldogs lost, 40-35, to Colorado State last year.

Ranking the Bowl Games
by Nicholas Tolomeo - 12/10/2009
Throw out the implications, the BCS or non-BCS factor, when it comes right down to it, what are the most intriguing, watchable, entertaining games on the bowl game schedule for this Holiday season? To be find out we will factor everything in including unintentional comedic potential, stadium, coaches and players involved, inspired or indifferent fan bases, awkward bowl sponsors, color of the turf, dome or outdoors, channel the game is on, potential announcers and of course, what else fans could be doing at that time on that day.

Brian Kelly Likely In as Notre Dame Coach
by Trevor Whenham - 12/10/2009
After months of speculation, it seems like Notre Dame has a new coach. Though it hasn't officially been announced yet, it seems as if Cincinnati coach Brian Kelly will be the next to helm the historic school in South Bend, Indiana. The schools aren't expected to make an announcement until after Thursday's football banquet at Cincinnati.

College Bowl Betting: Coaches to Trust and Avoid
by Nicholas Tolomeo - 12/9/2009
Some coaches treat bowl games as rewards for their players, some coaches treat them as must-win games and some do not stick around long enough to see their team through them. There is no other game in sports that has any many different preparation techniques. Most Big Ten schools stopped playing three weeks ago while other teams were slugging it out on Championship Saturday just this past week.

Heisman Trophy Odds and Predictions
by Trevor Whenham - 12/8/2009
This is the most wide open Heisman race we have seen in years - any one of the finalists could win it. Thanks to the switch to an entirely online balloting system for the first time this year the finalists were announced just over an hour after the votes were due on Monday. Because of the lack of a clear winner, five different players earned enough votes to warrant an invitation to New York for the ceremony on Saturday.

Six Best Bowl Matchups
by Trevor Whenham - 12/7/2009
The bowl game schedule is set, and I'm sure I'm not the only one who sat down this morning to track out my viewing plans. Who am I kidding - I'll watch all of them. Still, some of them have me more excited than others. Here are the six that immediately struck me as more intriguing that the rest.

Thursday Night NCAA: Oregon State at Oregon
by Matt Severance - 12/2/2009
The final Thursday night game of college football's regular season is the best matchup of the season on that night and certainly has the most on the line: the 113th Civil War between No. 16 Oregon State and No. 7 Oregon is a winner-take-all for a Rose Bowl berth opposite Ohio State. It's the first time in the Civil War's history that a Rose Bowl spot is on the line for both teams.

2009-10 College Bowl Projections
by Nicholas Tolomeo - 12/2/2009
Heading into Championship Saturday a few bowl invites have been trickling out and some bowl rumors are surfacing. However, much is still to be decided by what happens between Thursday and Saturday. The Florida-Alabama SEC Championship Game works as a semifinal of sorts with the winner advancing to the BCS National Championship Game and the loser likely headed to a Sugar Bowl consolation prize.

College Football Handicapping: Conference Championship Games
by Trevor Whenham - 12/1/2009
It's Conference Championship season in college football. I think you're either a fan of conference championship games or you're not. Personally, I think they are ridiculous, but then again I'm a Big Ten fan.

Thursday NCAA Football Preview : Texas at Texas A&M
by Matt Severance - 11/25/2009
There are a handful of potential trap games on the NCAA football schedule this week, matchups between teams heading to a conference title game next week against a fierce in-state rival with nothing to lose. I'm talking Georgia-Georgia Tech, South Carolina-Clemson, Florida State-Florida, Auburn-Alabama and Thanksgiving night's lone NCAA game, No. 3 Texas (11-0) at Texas A&M (6-5).

College Football Handicapping: Stanford Surging
by Trevor Whenham - 11/19/2009
Stanford. Wow. What else is there to say? A team that couldn't find a way to beat Wake Forest, Oregon State, or Arizona earlier in the season has now had the biggest upset of the week two weeks in a row. Both Oregon and USC were thought to be the prime contenders for the Rose Bowl, but Stanford beat them both - destroyed them, really.

TCU Probably Won't Get Chance to Play For National Title
by Trevor Whenham - 11/19/2009
TCU - the little school that could. The undefeated program has climbed to the unprecedented heights of 10th in both the AP Poll and the BCS rankings. They haven't gone halfway in their efforts, either - they have won their 10 games by an average of more than 26 points per game while allowing just 13 points per game. This is a team which can score and which plays even better defense.

Thursday Night NCAA Preview: Colorado at No. 12 Oklahoma State
by Matt Severance - 11/18/2009
Some might say that Oklahoma State doesn't have a lot to play for with the Big 12 South title all but out of reach - Texas would need to collapse in the final two games - but the Cowboys would be a very attractive BCS bowl at-large team if they can win out and finish 10-2, beginning Thursday night against Colorado, which is an 18-point dog on Bookmaker (+650 on the money line).

Thursday Night NCAA: South Florida at Rutgers
by Matt Severance - 11/11/2009
Frankly, if you are going to watch or bet on just one Big East game this week, Friday's ESPN matchup between West Virginia and Cincinnati is the key conference game of the year to this point. But that's not to say there are no storylines for Thursday night's ESPN matchup of South Florida (-1 on JustBet) and Rutgers - it's just that the storylines aren't quite as nationally relevant.

College Football Handicapping: Under-The-Radar ATS Gems
by Trevor Whenham - 11/11/2009
When it comes to college football most bettors focus on the big name teams playing the high-profile games. That only makes sense given the coverage that those games get in the media. The problem, though, is that increased betting attention means that the lines just don't have the potential for value that under-bet lines can.

Oregon Ducks Looking Like One Of Nation's Best
by Trevor Whenham - 11/5/2009
I sat through every painful minute of Oregon's opening debacle at Boise State. I'm not an Oregon fan, and I am only marginally a Boise State fan, but by the end I just couldn't change the channel - it was like an impossibly ugly car wreck. My eyes were glued to it. If you had told me then that at the Ducks may very well be the best team in the country by the beginning of November I would have, without hesitation, had you committed.

College Football Handicapping: Teams That Have Thrown in the Towel
by Trevor Whenham - 11/4/2009
We're into the final stretch of the college football regular season. For teams in contention this is when the pressure gets ratcheted up and every game matters even more than ever before. For some teams, though, the season can't end soon enough. Those teams have had a very rough season, and probably aren't having much fun anymore.

Thursday Night NCAA Preview: Virginia Tech at East Carolina
by Matt Severance - 11/3/2009
Virginia Tech's ACC title and BCS bowl hopes all but vanished last Thursday night when North Carolina's Casey Barth kicked a field goal with no time left to give the Heels the very surprising upset as 16.5-point dogs in Blacksburg.

Thursday Night NCAA Football Preview: North Carolina at Virginia Tech
by Matt Severance - 10/28/2009
It's the second Thursday night game in a row for the North Carolina Tar Heels, and it's hard to imagine this one against Virginia Tech going any worse than last week's did against Florida State. UNC was dominating FSU last week to the tune of 24-6 early in the third quarter but was then outscored 24-3 in the final 22 minutes.

College Football Handicapping: What The Future Holds for Unbeaten Teams
by Trevor Whenham - 10/28/2009
There are seven unbeaten teams remaining in college football. We know for sure that there won't be that many by the end of the season - Alabama and Florida will play in the SEC Championship Game if they don't lose first. But how about the rest? Here's a look at each of the teams, their chances of staying undefeated, and what an undefeated season would likely do for them:

College Football Handicapping: Idaho One of Betting's Biggest Surprises
by Nicholas Tolomeo - 10/22/2009
There are programs in the midst of downturns and programs that are turning things around and then there is Idaho, who is completely remaking itself. The Vandals are 6-1 straight up this season and 7-0 against the spread and they find themselves as a big underdog this weekend against Nevada.

College Football Handicapping: Unranked Teams That Could Finish Strong
by Trevor Whenham - 10/22/2009
We have now made it through seven weeks of the current college football season. We probably feel like we have a pretty good sense of which teams are for real and which ones are pretenders by now. History tells us that that's not the case, though. There were nine teams ranked in the AP Top 25 after seven weeks last year that were not still ranked by the time the final poll came out.

College Football Handicapping: BCS Conference Rankings
by Trevor Whenham - 10/21/2009
We are just over halfway through the college football season. That means that this is a good time for us to assess what has happened so far, and what could happen going forward. One way I like to do that - both because it is useful and it is fun - is to rank the BCS conferences based on the strength they have shown this year.

Thursday NCAA Football Preview: Florida State at North Carolina
by Matt Severance - 10/20/2009
This Thursday's ESPN game between Florida State and North Carolina looked like a potential ACC title game preview before the season but now is just two schools looking to get out of the cellar of their respective divisions and perhaps looking forward to the start of basketball season.

Thursday NCAA Preview: No. 8 Cincinnati at No. 21 South Florida
by Matt Severance - 10/13/2009

Heisman Trophy Race Update
by Trevor Whenham - 10/8/2009
The Heisman race this year was supposed to be so simple. Former winners Tim Tebow and Sam Bradford were supposed to duel with Colt McCoy in a fight for the ages. Like always seems to happen in these cases, though, it hasn't quite worked out like that. Sam Bradford has been out with a shoulder injury, Tim Tebow is questionable for his next start after getting his bell rung, and and Colt McCoy hasn't looked particularly crisp despite continuing to win.

Disappointing College Teams Against the Spread
by Trevor Whenham - 10/7/2009
With so many high profile college football teams out there it is inevitable that there will be several that wind up being big betting disappointments. Some teams win but aren't as dominant as people expect so they can't cover spreads. Others just struggle when people expect them to excel. Here's a look at five teams that have been particularly frustrating and damaging to the bankroll this year:

Thursday Night Football Preview: No. 21 Nebraska at No. 24 Missouri
by Matt Severance - 10/6/2009
Last year, Mizzou scored 52 points and crushed Nebraska, 52-17. It was the most points the Tigers had scored against the Cornhuskers since 1943 and was the Huskers' most lopsided home loss in 53 years and fifth-worst in Lincoln in the program's 119-year history. And if you go back two seasons, Mizzou has outscored Nebraska 95-23 in the past two meetings. Yet the host Tigers are three-point dogs this week on BetUS.

College Football Handicapping: West Virginia Seeks Revenge
by Matt Severance - 9/30/2009
West Virginia's defense has been even worse than Colorado's so far, at least points-wise, allowing an average of 27.0 per game. The last time out the Mountaineers were beaten 41-30 by Auburn. The reason for that was six turnovers, including five by QB Jarrett Brown. But when WVU wins the turnover battle it has won 50 of the past 53 games.

College Football Handicapping: Betting Large Spreads
by Nicholas Tolomeo - 9/30/2009
College football is the home of rivalries, rankings, upsets and the four-touchdown plus point spread. As more and more teams open their season with sacrificial lamb opponents scattered throughout the first two months of the schedule, oddsmakers have been forced to inflate lines all the way up to 72 this season. Likewise bettors looking for action in these frays have had to wager while calculating things like second team defenses and a coaches tendency to run up the score.

College Football Handicapping: Iowa Heads To White House
by Nicholas Tolomeo - 9/24/2009
It will be no different at 8 p.m. this Saturday inside college football's largest stadium when Penn State, a 9.5-point favorite, hosts Iowa. The Penn State faithful, the players, and Joe Paterno himself might have a little something extra for Iowa after the Hawkeyes dealt Penn State its lone defeat last regular season and what possibly cost JoePa his last chance at a national title.

College Football Handicapping: After The Trojans Break
by Nicholas Tolomeo - 9/24/2009
These midseason hiccups are almost a rite of autumn. Besides USC's two trips to the National Championship game in 2004 and 2005 each Pete Carroll season has featured a major upset. Here is a recap of each one and what became of the Trojans the next week and the remainder of the season.

College Football Handicapping: Nonconference Vs. Conference Betting Differences
by Trevor Whenham - 9/23/2009
It's overly simplified and inaccurate to say that the nonconference schedule is like the preseason, but there is no question that games carry a bit more weight when they are against conference opponents. Teams approach the conference schedule differently than the rest of their games, and that means that successful handicappers need to make adjustments to thrive as the season progresses. Here's a look at five ways that you need to adjust to find success in nonconference play:

Football Betting: Early Week Line Movements
by Robert Ferringo - 9/22/2009
Once again, those people late to the party came up short on the early line movements. Last week the college teams we tracked went just 2-4 against the spread while the NFL teams went 1-1. For the season, the heavy line moves are just 7-13 ATS in college and 10-15 ATS overall. Here is this week's action:

College Football Handicapping: West Virginia in an Uncommon Situation
by Nicholas Tolomeo - 9/17/2009
In case West Virginia was not in for enough culture shock when it ventures down south to take on the Auburn Tigers of the SEC in 87,451-seat Jordan-Hare Stadium under the lights at 7:45 p.m. Saturday night, it has to deal with another unlikely scenario.

College Football Handicapping: Big 12 Top Teams Take Step Back
by Trevor Whenham - 9/16/2009
We came into the current college football season with positively giddy expectations for the Big 12, but the first two weeks of the season have significantly challenged those expectations. College Football Betting: Week 3s Best Non Top-25 Matchups

College Football is all about prestige and power rankings. College Football Handicapping: Michigan Resurgence
by Trevor Whenham - 9/16/2009
I bleed Maize and Blue, so the last two weeks have been blissful relief after two years of increasing agony. Michigan hasn't proven anything yet, and there is still ample time for this season to fall way off the rails, but what we have seen in the Wolverines' first two weeks is enough to give even the most defeated pessimist hope.

College Football Handicapping: Can Oregon Recover?
by Trevor Whenham - 9/11/2009

Where Does Oklahoma Go From Here?
by Trevor Whenham - 9/11/2009
What's the worst thing that could possibly have happened to the Oklahoma Sooners? Not much question that that would be losing Sam Bradford for an extended time to injury. What's the second worst thing? Perhaps losing tight end Jermaine Gresham, a potential All-American who was likely to be the pass-heavy team's likely leading passer.

College Football Handicapping: Week 1 Surprises
by Trevor Whenham - 9/8/2009
One of the biggest of the many, many joys of college football is that we can never really know what we have until we see the teams play. We can spend the whole offseason analyzing the players that have left the team and those that have joined it, the ways the coaching staff has changed, and so on. The problem, though, is that so much of what we think we know is just pure speculation.

Thursday NCAA Preview: No. 16 Oregon at No. 14 Boise State Predictions
by Matt Severance - 9/3/2009
Last year, Boise State went to Eugene and shocked the Ducks, 37-32. Oddsmakers at Bodog expect something similar, with the Broncos listed as 3 1/2-point favorites (the total is at 64); the line has moved somewhat to Oregon. I fully expect the over here because Oregon plays at a very fast pace and the Broncos like to spread the field out.

College Football Betting: Early Season Time to Pad Bankroll
by Trevor Whenham - 9/2/2009
For a lot of people, college football can be a more attractive betting prospect than the NFL. The lines are often less accurate when they are set, lower betting volumes mean that the value can remain in lines longer, lower profile games can have really inaccurate lines for astute bettors, and the huge number of games means that there are sure to be attractive games each week regardless of what you like to bet.

College Football Handicapping: True Freshman Quarterbacks

When USC opens their season on Saturday against San Jose State they will be doing it as the No. 4-ranked team in the country. They'll also be doing it with Matt Barkley, a true freshman, at quarterback. Toughest 2009 College Football Schedules
by Trevor Whenham - 7/31/2009
A college football team needs to have a whole lot of talent and even more luck if they want to be a serious contender. They also need to have a friendly schedule. An easy schedule can make an average team look good and a tough schedule could make that same team look terrible. The strength of schedule is also very important for handicappers. As we get ready for another college football season, here's a look at four teams that are facing fairly brutal schedules this year.

Big 12 Football: Conference Futures Odds and Predictions
