Big Ten Basketball Betting: Weekly Notebook
by Matt Severance - 02/09/2009
As bad as the Indiana Hoosiers have been this year, and they have lost 12 of their past 13 games and sit at the bottom of the Big Ten, Tom Crean's club has been respectable against the spread. IU is 8-8 ATS overall this season and 5-3 at home.
But you probably want to steer clear of those Hoosiers this week as they will be missing their leading scorer for sure Tuesday night at Minnesota (IU is winless on the road as it is) and possibly Sunday against Illinois. That would be guard Devan Dumes, who caught a case of the elbows in Saturday's loss to Michigan State.
Dumes was ejected late in the 75-47 loss to the Spartans after receiving a flagrant technical foul for throwing an elbow that made contact with Spartans center Tom Herzog. But that was just one of three elbows that Dumes threw in the game. In the first half, Dumes was called for an offensive foul after his elbow made contact to the face of Travis Walton, and in the second half Dumes hit MSU's Goran Suton with an elbow to the mid-section as the players were running down the court. After that latter one, officials looked at a replay on video and warned Crean that they were keeping their eyes on Dumes. He must not have gotten the message.
Crean announced an indefinite suspension on Sunday night, and the Big Ten commissioner called Dumes' actions "unacceptable." The junior averages 13.8 points per game, one of only two players to average double figures for IU.
The Hoosiers nearly upset the Gophers earlier this season, falling 67-63 in Bloomington on Jan. 25. Dumes led IU with 19 points in that game and missed a tying three-pointer with a few seconds left. Dumes was shooting 56.3 percent from the three-point line since that game. He was 5-for-5 from behind the arc with 27 points in Indiana's 68-60 victory over Iowa last Wednesday that assured the Hoosiers won't go winless in conference play, which was looking more and more likely.
PURDUE: This team badly needs preseason Big Ten Player of the Year Robbie Hummel. The sophomore forward sat out both games last week, and the Boilermakers dropped them both. He has a stress fracture and there is no time frame for his return. There's even a chance he could be shut down for the season. Purdue is 6-1 in Big Ten games in which Hummel plays and 0-3 when he does not. He hasn't participated in a full practice since Dec. 20.
"He could play in the Penn State game (on Wednesday), or he could be out for a week or two,'' Purdue coach Matt Painter said to reporters of Hummel's status.
OHIO STATE: Lets go ahead and call Evan Turner the best player in the conference this season. He earned his second straight Big Ten Player of the Week honors as he put up back-to-back double-doubles as Ohio State beat two ranked teams, Purdue and Minnesota.
The sophomore swingman averaged 22 points and 11 rebounds on the week to extend Ohio State's win streak to four games. He leads OSU, which probably cemented an at-large NCAA Tournament berth with that sweep last week, in scoring (17.0 ppg), rebounding (7.5 rpg), assists (72), steals (43), minutes played (780), field goals made (122), free throws made (122) and defensive rebounds (127).
MICHIGAN STATE: The Spartans put an end to that improbable two-game home losing streak with routs of Minnesota and Indiana in East Lansing last week. They did that without second-leading scorer Raymar Morgan, who is still struggling with an illness that was being referred to as walking pneumonia but is now being called mono.
Coach Tom Izzo said it was very unlikely that Morgan would play Tuesday night at Michigan. Izzo hopes to have the junior forward back in the lineup for a Feb. 17 game at Purdue that could determine the Big Ten regular-season title. Senior guard Travis Walton, who missed practice Sunday, said he just has a cold and will play Tuesday. The Spartans are looking for their first win in Ann Arbor since 2005, but they are 5-0-1 ATS on the road this season.
