Football Betting: Thursday Public Action Report
by Trevor Whenham - 11/27/2008
We're doing the Public Action Report early this weekend because of the holiday, and because so many good games are on Friday. This will also be the last Report of the season since the college regular season is winding down. All good things must come to an end. It seems fitting, then, that we have a large number of college games this week to finish things off.

National Championship and BCS Projections
by Nicholas Tolomeo - 11/25/2008
The jigsaw puzzle that is the collegiate football national championship picture becomes more and more clear each week. However, with two weeks of college football remaining I would not be so quick to count any team out of this just yet.

Football Betting: Friday Public Action Report
by Trevor Whenham - 11/21/2008
It's an abnormally active week for the Public Action Report - there are four games that fit the criteria. Given the number of games I won't spend a lot of time dwelling on the criteria, but basically we are looking for games where one team has a large majority of the bets, yet the line is moving to make that team more attractive. We are also looking for the line to have moved from, to, or through a key number. Without further ado:

Fourth Down and Inches
by Doc - 11/19/2008
This is the traditional week of big rivals, as some teams close out the 2008 season with their in-state or border state rival. One of those matchups this week features Indiana at Purdue. This game features the two worst teams in the Big Ten but has special meaning for Purdue, as this will be Coach Tiller's final game. In his 12 years at Purdue, Tiller has created an offensive powerhouse and led the conference's advancement into the 21st Century by creating a spread offense.

Football Betting: Early Week Line Movements
by Robert Ferringo - 11/19/2008
It was clean sweeps all around last week. Our "sharp" action posted a 0-fer in college football, missing on all four of its movements over last weekend. Conversely, the NFL early line movements were a great indicator as it went 3-0 against the spread.

Football Betting: Friday Public Action Report
by Trevor Whenham - 11/14/2008
It was a very good weekend for the Public Action Report last weekend - we looked at three games, and in all three games the team with comparatively little betting action covered the spread. That's what we are looking for. Let's see if we can keep the streak alive. There is one NFL game and two college games that fit our criteria.

Fourth Down and Inches
by Doc - 11/12/2008
Our Big Ten selections rolled last week as we released Iowa, Wisconsin, Ohio State, and Western Michigan and we nailed the Superfecta by winning all four. Even though Ohio State was our top play of the week, the most gratifying selection might have been Iowa. The Hawkeyes beat Penn State straight up with a field goal at the buzzer and certainly looked good on defense for 60 minutes. I must admit that I am eating crow with Iowa, as I predicted them to finish at the bottom of the standings. True, they are just 3-3 in the Big Ten.

Football Betting: Early Week Line Movements
by Robert Ferringo - 11/11/2008
By this point in the football season the oddsmakers have all of the empirical and substantive data that they need to produce spreads with surgical precision each week. As a result, we can expect to see fewer and fewer severe line movements as the betting markets have stabilized somewhat. This week, for example, we have our fewest number of early line movements of the entire season.

Football Betting: Friday Public Action Report
by Trevor Whenham - 11/07/2008
Another week of football means another week of the Public Action Report. You can look at last week's report for a more detailed breakdown of what we are looking for here, but essentially the goal is to find games with line movement that is contrary to what is expected. There are three games to look at this week - two in college on Saturday, and the Monday night game.

Fourth Down and Inches
by Doc - 11/05/2008
I wish I could start with better news, but our Big Ten Game of the Year went down. Our choice was Michigan State -5 over Wisconsin and we came up short, as the Spartans won by just one point. I think I have been on the money with the Badgers all season long, but went to the well once too often. A couple of weeks ago we used Iowa as a 5-unit pick over Wisconsin and easily won, 38-16. Hindsight is 20/20, but that game would have been the right call for our 8-unit selection. Losing those units certainly got us off to a rough start; however, we did rebound with the rest of the card to show a small profit last week.

Football Betting: Early Week Line Movements
by Robert Ferringo - 11/04/2008
We had a real nice weekend for the sharp action, as the early line movements tracked in this space were an indicator of who would cover in seven of 11 instances. We are actually getting into the time of the year when, I believe, that early line movements can be a decent trend to follow. Oddsmakers become sharper as the season moves on because they have a strong grasp of team performances, and bettors become a bit more complacent because they THINK they know everything they need to about how teams will perform.

NHL Betting: The Week's Biggest Stories
by Trevor Whenham - 11/03/2008
The NHL is moving beyond those first giddy weeks and settling into the long, steady rhythm of the midseason. Depending upon your view of the sport, this is either the best time of the season as we get to slowly learn about which teams are contenders and which will be getting extra golfing practice, or it is soul-crushing monotony. For bettors, this is also the time when we are able to start making betting decisions based not on what we expect to happen based upon what is on paper, but based on what we have actually seen unfold.

Football Betting: Friday Public Action Report
by Trevor Whenham - 10/31/2008
After taking a break for a week, it's time to return to the Public Action Report. It's been a while, so let's review. Typically, when one team has attracted a significant majority of the bets made on a game the odds on that team are going to increase. That's because sportsbooks generally want to have the action on the two sides in a game basically balanced so that they can earn their profit without enduring risk. Sometimes, though, we'll see a situation in which one team has a large majority of the bets on their side, yet the line is moving to make them more attractive.

Football Betting: Early Week Line Movements
by Robert Ferringo - 10/28/2008
Last week our tracked teams posted a modest profit, as the sharp action went 5-3 against the spread. However, that doesn't curtail the slide that these early line movements have been in over the last month. Over the last four weekends the most severe early line movements have only predicted which team would cover 32 percent of the time (11-23 ATS).

Fourth Down and Inches
by Doc - 10/22/2008
Our top selection last weekend in college seemed in doubt at halftime, but Penn State put forth a dominating effort in the second half to down Michigan, 46-17. This was our second-straight victory with a 6-unit play, the first being Ohio State over Wisconsin. This week we will be coming right back with another 6-unit selection, our third of the season. This choice will be a Conference Game of the Year and come from either the ACC or PAC-10. This homer will get the call and should easily improve our mark to 3-0. If you are looking for a big play this weekend, this is the one!

Football Betting: Early Week Line Movements
by Robert Ferringo - 10/22/2008
Two points are being illustrated by our research here with our early line movements. First, the systems and situations that can consistently pay out in the long term are not easy to find. Over a two-year stretch the "sharp" action is just 52-52. Second, since you can't just blindly play favorites, or underdogs, or early line movements, the three ways to make a profit in football gambling are to 1) go against teams taking more than 80-85 percent of the public action, 2) stay ahead of trends, and 3) know when to ride the hot hand.

I wish I could have started this column out with some good news as far as last week's selections are concerned. However, that is not the case. We did nail a nice 5-unit winner with Penn State, as they completely destroyed Wisconsin, 48-7. We also had a nice winner with Mississippi State ending Vanderbilt's perfect season, but those two wins did not come close to covering the disappointing losses that we had.

Football Betting: Friday Public Action Report
by Trevor Whenham - 10/10/2008
It's time for another installment of everyone's favorite Friday diversion - The Public Action Report. For those who haven't been hanging on every word for the last couple of years, what we are looking for here is line movement in college and NFL games that doesn't make sense. The criteria is that 75 percent of the bets made on a game are on one team, yet the line is moving to make the favored team more attractive. That doesn't make sense, but it is surprising how often it happens. There are a couple reasons it could happen - the books think they know something that makes them unafraid of unbalanced action, or smart money is pouring in on the underdog.

Fourth Down and Inches
by Doc - 10/08/2008
Our six-unit play last Saturday was a real nail bitter, as Ohio State edged Wisconsin, 20-17, as a 1.5-point favorite. I had a chance to be at that game and was not totally impressed with the Buckeyes. I did think QB Terrelle Pryor looked good at times but still has some problems when it comes to throwing the football. That being said, he is a tremendous athlete and I expect him to improve during his tenure in Columbus and have them challenging for a national title before long. RB Beanie Wells is the player that makes this team go and he had 168 yards against the Badgers.

Football Betting: Friday Public Action Report
by Trevor Whenham - 10/03/2008
Time now for another installment of the Public Action Report. Before we get into the action, though, let's revisit just what we are doing here, and why. Though the general public can't find out the amount of money bet on either side in a particular game, there are lots of places you can find out how many bets have been made on each side. In general, a game in which one side has a significantly lopsided amount of the action, the line will move to make that team less attractive. That's just basic supply and demand. A few times each week, though, there are games where the bets are very heavily on one side, yet the line is moving to make the popular team more attractive. How does that happen?

Fourth Down and Inches
by Doc - 09/30/2008
Our selection service returned to the Winner's Circle this past weekend, anchored once again by our college choices. It was a good weekend, but what a tremendous week it would have been if Ohio State would have covered. The Buckeyes gave up a meaningless 22-yard touchdown pass on what was the last Gophers snap of the game. This allowed the final tally to be 34-21 and, thus, the Buckeyes did not cover the 18-point spread. For those of you who witnessed the misery, as painful as it was, it's all part of winning and losing. As I look at this week's card, I feel real confident that we are going to roll and make some big money.

Football Betting: Friday Public Action Report
by Trevor Whenham - 09/26/2008
We saw why following counter-intuitive line movement can be so interesting in the Public Action Report last week. The public was overwhelmingly on the Panthers, yet the Vikings rose up under the ancient Gus Frerotte and won handily. The line movement gave us a good hint that could happen. This week we again have just one NFL game that fits the criteria (more than 70 percent of bettors on one team, but the line moves to make that team less favored), but there are also two in college football for us to look at.

Indian Cowboy Thursday and Friday Predictions
by Indian Cowboy - 09/25/2008
If you looked at my Insider's Page, you realize that I'm a firm believer in research. Heck, the very formula that I espouse is at the top. It states, "research + finding dogs that can win outright = profits". With that said, what has helped me grow quickly in this industry is the fact that people love well-researched games. They look to me for such research that I publish each and every day to help add more information to what they already have and use my leans accordingly. Thus, despite the fact if you purchase my selections or you do not, this is the very research that has helped me win over the long haul and five out of the last seven days here at Doc's. I hope you find this useful in any way as it helps you make better selections this week and hopefully pad more winners.

Fourth Down and Inches
by Doc - 09/24/2008
Even after 37 years, having a Saturday as rough as we had last weekend is still very hard to swallow and digest. I never had a problem with losing a game when our team just got outplayed or failed to show up. Our selection on Florida Atlantic certainly fell into that category, as the Owls never got off the plane in Minnesota and went down in defeat, 37-3. But what I do have a problem with is a game like North Carolina/Virginia Tech, our College Football Game of the Year. Carolina looked sharp for 40 minutes, leading 17-3 with complete control of the game. Moments before their second touchdown, their QB T.J. Yates went out with a fractured ankle and his departure completely turned this game around. He will be out for six weeks and I look for Carolina to struggle in the upcoming weeks.

We're back again at a look for spots where the books are sending a message that seems to be encouraging the public to keep doing what they are doing. This is the week that I have been waiting for, as we will release our "2008 College Game of the Year." I actually spotted this game back in August and everything has worked out well including getting a positive report from my scout who follows the program. This alum felt that the team would be much better in 2008 with experience and a coach with a track record of success. They will enter as a small favorite and when you throw in revenge, it leads me to believe that this program is ready to shine. I truly believe anyone that purchases this week's card will be satisfied with the pick and the result.

Football Betting: Friday Public Action Report
by Trevor Whenham - 09/12/2008
Last week was the debut of the public action report, and it wasn't as strong as it will be later in the season. That's to be expected - the books will obviously develop a better sense of the teams as the season progresses, and time will also give the public a chance to develop and strengthen their biases. This week there are five games that fit into our criteria - our first one from the NFL, and four from the college ranks. As a refresher, the criteria is that at least 70 percent of bets have bee made on one team, yet the line has moved to make that popular team more attractive.

For the second-straight week our top selection of the weekend was the Temple Owls. The Owls played their hearts out and suffered an overtime loss, 12-9, but easily covered as a 6-½ point underdog. I had made up my mind before the season had started that this unit would be vastly improved and the oddsmakers would undervalue them based of their past history. The oddsmakers felt the public would not jump on the Temple bandwagon but lucky for us we were all over them for two 5-unit winners. Temple is on the road this week against Buffalo and will be a two field goal underdog.

Friday Public Action Report
by Trevor Whenham - 09/05/2008
We're back with anther season of the Public Action Report. The theory here is simple. In most cases the line in a game moves in the same way as the bettors are betting. If one team is getting the majority of the betting action then their line will often be moved so that they are more favored. Sometimes, though, the opposite happens - a team gets heavy betting action, but the line moves against them. A situation like that means that the sportsbooks aren't afraid of heavy action on the favorites, and may even be encouraging it. That could mean that the underdog is worth a serious look.

Weekly MLB Underdog Report
by Matt Foust - 09/05/2008
We are into the stretch run of the MLB season now and things are starting to heat up as far as division races and wild card spots are concerned. The dogs are starting to heat up as well; the last two weeks have been great for astute MLB bettors. There are likely to be some faders the next few weeks but there is also a good possibility that some of these borderline playoff teams may give an increased effort as the season comes to a close (i.e. the New York Yankees). Either thing can be good for the bankroll.

Fourth Down and Inches

One again it's that time of year, as this is the kickoff issue for our annual Fourth Down and Inches. Our selection service started the season on a great note, as we finished 5-2, +12 units. What was most gratifying was that our top selection, Temple, completely destroyed Army, 35-7. I spotted that game early in the summer and, believe me, it would have been a rough Saturday had that game gone down Friday night.

Weekly MLB Underdog Report
by Matt Foust - 08/29/2008
It looked like somebody had called off the dogs last week (just 33 percent win percentage), but they returned this week and with some bite too. This was really somewhat of a surprise, but there are a few things that can account for it. First, there were a number of mediocre to poor teams facing poor teams (i.e. Rangers at Royals) - somebody has to win, right? Second and almost the reverse of the first point, there were a number of quality teams facing quality teams (i.e. Rays at White Sox). Third, there was some streaking going on, and mostly by teams that have not played well this year (i.e. Giants, Rockies, Indians, and Nationals). Nationals? Streaking? Yes, winning five out of 10 is the Washington version of streaking.

It's an interesting paradox of professional sports that this year's pennant races in Major League Baseball are infused with young, talented and low-paid teams that are thriving amid the pressure while higher-priced teams with higher-paid and bigger-name stars are struggling.

Weekly MLB Underdog Report

Yes, we are back after a few weeks off and we're ready to check in on the dogs. This will be our ninth week of evaluation and it will be interesting to see what changes recent trades, injuries and minor league call-ups produce in the next few weeks. I think we'll probably start to see home underdog percentages fade as home dogs are usually poor teams anyway and they get even worse toward the end of the season. They typically dump players at the deadline and bring in some prominent minor leaguers to get some time in the big leagues. That trend may have started this week.

With the regular season winding down and the pennant races heating up, this is a good time to hone in on a few teams that should bring in good money down the stretch. The teams that added a key player near the trade deadline, and are clearly serious about contending, historically play with a greater sense of urgency and intensity by comparison to those who didn't. Some of this already has taken shape, as teams such as the Dodgers and White Sox appear to be playing with a renewed intensity.

With a nod to an economy that is nearing full-blown recession, it's fair to say baseball betting also can be a financial disaster if you are picking in all the wrong places. Interestingly, there is a bit of a regional phenomenon that's taking place. At least in the baseball world, things in the Midwest are looking up, while the West Coast is facing dire straits.

It's that time of the season in Major League Baseball when teams have declared, through trade -- deadline activity or lack thereof - their intentions for the rest of the season. While some teams are acquiring star players through trades on likely a short-term basis for a pennant run, others are dumping salaries and trying to reload with younger talent through the trade market.

We move into week eight of our underdog analysis, and the results this week were strikingly similar to the numbers we put out in our summary report on Wednesday. I would expect these numbers to be comparable from week to week for the rest of the year as the only real irregularities occurred during Interleague Play. Hopefully, they will provide you with the edge you need for the remainder of the baseball season.

Weekly MLB Underdog Report
by Matt Foust - 07/11/2008
This marks our sixth week of dog watching, and I am sad to report that they performed rather poorly the past seven days. In fact, this week was the worst of the six we have observed as the overall win percentage was just 33 percent. While that's not the equivalent of chewing up shoes and peeing on the carpet, it still doesn't make you happy. However, despite the lackluster returns, there were a few bright spots.

With the All-Star break right around the corner, it's time to assess the big winners and losers of the first half of the season, and see what might be a prelude of things to come. Already, some teams are going into the "buy or sell" mode that determines whether they believe they can contend this year or must start building for the future. Of course, these big deadline trades will have an effect on the value of all teams.

This week the underdogs continued to generate more bang for fewer bucks. The last couple of weeks have been strong for the perceived weak and this week was no different. At one point, line dogs won 17 games in 30 opportunities with returns ranging anywhere from +100 to +159. Not too bad for a couple of days work, let's see how they fared in the other five days.

Oddsmakers are no doubt anxiously awaiting the end of Interleague Play. They have had trouble getting the line right the past couple of weeks and dog watchers have made a killing as a result. In a previous article I declared the week of June 6 through June 12 the "Week of the Dog". Well, it lost the title this week in stunning fashion. It's an interesting coincidence that the Philadelphia Phillies can lose six straight and still be in first place, while the Kansas City Royals can win seven straight and still find themselves in dead last. It basically indicates that we're far enough along in the season that a short-term variation on a good or bad team should not be an indicator of permanent change in their long-term value.

This week saw our beloved spoilers make a partial return to earth. However, they did have a shining moment on Saturday, as they took nine out of 15 games. These weren't pedestrian payouts either, the winning odds for the hounds ranged from +100 to +182, with only one winner being below +140 odds. Yes, last Saturday was certainly a good day for astute dog players. Let's see how the rest of week shaped up.

Now that the season is a third of the way through, it's worth noting that zero managers have met the firing squad … yet. But the watch officially is on. Mets skipper Willie Randolph survived a well-publicized meeting with management and Chicago White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen did the same, but neither might be around for long if the their teams continue on losing paths and the managers themselves pose some of the biggest distractions.

Enough time has passed in the Major League Baseball season that you can now comfortably lock in on certain teams and players and take out some of the guesswork. It seems like it takes about a month or so for things to settle down in the baseball season. The Red Sox and Cubs, two popular picks to reach the World Series, have each heated up with big winning streaks, while teams such as the Royals and Pirates, who had nice early-season surges, have settled into their familiar comfort zone at the bottom of the standings. However, for teams like the Phillies and Indians, a couple of popular dark horse picks who have yet to play to their potential, it might be too early to say where their season is headed, although neither has met expectations yet.

Streak betting can be a valuable tool in Major League Baseball, even early in the season. Although teams tend to win or lose in bunches after the All-Star break - at which point some are making moves to improve their rosters for a playoff run and others are having a fire sale to rebuild - it's never too early to keep an eye out for a good streak to back.
