Most Super Bowl Rings by a Player
by Josh Nagel - 02/12/2008
My old friend Jim cracked a deadpan one-liner as we watched Dallas Cowboys defensive end Charles Haley trot off the field, sans his helmet, in between plays during the second quarter of Super Bowl XXX after the 1995 season.

Alternate Super Bowl Lines
by Trevor Whenham - 01/31/2008
We are just a few days away from the Super Bowl (finally!), and most sports bettors are trying to figure out how they are going to bet the Super Bowl point spread. For some people the decision will be an easy one. They will either go blindly with their gut, or they see something in the stats and matchups that makes the outcome clear in their minds. For a lot of serious bettors, though, the way they will ultimately bet isn't yet clear.

Super Bowl Bets I Wish I Could Make
by Trevor Whenham - 01/31/2008
It's incredible to see the number of Super Bowl prop bets that are being offered by books this year. You can bet on almost everything from the relevant and interesting to the truly ridiculous. As hard as it is to believe, though, there are quite a few bets that I was looking to make that I couldn't find anyone offering action on. Here, then, are the 25 bets I wish I could make, with my chosen side in brackets. If anyone wants a piece of any of them just drop me a line.

Super Bowl Money Management
by Robert Ferringo - 01/30/2008
The Super Bowl is for amateurs. I know, I know: that's blasphemy. I am urinating upon the Altar of The NFL. The Super Bowl is supposed to be not just another game, but THE Game. If you are up big betting on the football season then the Super Bowl is supposed to be your coronation, one last Big Score before you bury this season deep in your amygdala with so many other fragmented memories. If you are down on the year the Super Bowl is your Waterloo, a last-ditch effort to stave off defeat at the hands of the Unknown Forces. Either way, the Super Bowl represents something grandiose and important and it's nearly your duty as a red-blooded betting American to throw down some action on the game.

Super Bowl First Half Betting
by Trevor Whenham - 01/30/2008
First half betting is always a popular option for savvy NFL bettors, and that is especially true for the Super Bowl. The books offer so many different lines that you can probably find one that works for you regardless of how you think the game will play out. Pinnacle offers three different first half lines. 5Dimes goes even further, offering five different lines to choose from. Let's take a look at each of the five available lines to see how we might be able to use them effectively to maximize our Super Bowl betting profits (all odds are from 5Dimes).

Super Bowl Squares Probability
by Max - 01/30/2008
The big game has arrived and the majority of Americans will have some sort of action on the big game. Many will be involved in office pools where 100 squares are sold with each square costing the same amount. Once all the squares are sold, numbers are drawn twice with every number from 0-9 being used for both the horizontal and vertical columns. Each number is only used once for each column and thus no row either up or down will have the same number. All 100 squares will have different numbers as well and in most if not all cases, you are only concerned with the last number for each teams point total. For a template please see our Super Bowl squares chart.

Running Game Key to ATS Success in Super Bowl
by Trevor Whenham - 01/29/2008
When you think of the Patriots and their league-best offense, you usually don't think about the running game. Sure, they are in the top half of the league in ground efficiency, but it 's the passing game that has led them this close to the Promised Land. If New England had a choice, they would pass on every down. Despite that, it's a mistake to underestimate the importance of the running game to the outcome of the Super Bowl. The team that has gained the most yards on the ground has covered more than 70 percent of all Super Bowls played (30-11 ATS). That's more dominant than the role of the passing game, and it sends a clear message that we will be well served by spending some time figuring out which team has the better chance of wining the running battle on Sunday.

Super Bowl Quarters Betting
by Trevor Whenham - 01/29/2008
In a normal NFL game you can't bet on the third and fourth quarter until halftime. Nothing else about the Super Bowl is normal, though, so why should this be any different? At 5Dimes there are odds set for each of the four quarters. Because this isn't common, we really need to think about just how, or even if, we can use these bets to our advantage. Here are five ways that the bets could be used effectively to maximize the profit from your particular view of the outcome of the game.

Bodog Offers Prop Bets for Super Bowl Commercials
by Trevor Whenham - 01/29/2008
For many people the Super Bowl is all about the commercials. As a Canadian, the commercials have always held extra mystery for me because we usually don't get to see most of them. Maybe that's why one of the Super Bowl props offered by Bodog this year is so intriguing to me. Sure, lots of other books are offering commercial props like which company's ads will play first. None, though, are taking it as seriously as Bodog. On that site you can bet on which company will have the highest rated commercial. The judge will be the USA Today Ad Meter, and there are six options for you to choose from - Budweiser, GoDaddy.com, Pepsi, McDonald's, Victoria Secret and Other.

Betting the Super Bowl Total
by Trevor Whenham - 01/29/2008
Betting the Super Bowl total is always a bit of a puzzle, and this year is no exception. The total opened at 55, but quickly fell to 53.5. That indicates at least an early public preference for the under. We don't just want to blindly follow the public opinion, though, so let's take a look at it for ourselves.

My Thoughts On Super Bowl XLII
by Allen Eastman - 01/29/2008
The toughest part is over for the New York Giants and the New England Patriots, who won their respective conference championships just two Sundays ago. In my opinion, the AFC and NFC title games are the toughest games to win all season, because those are the games that get you into to the Super Bowl and teams are playing their best.

Odd Super Bowl Bets
by Trevor Whenham - 01/26/2008
There are so many different proposition bets available for the Super Bowl that it is hard to even know where to begin. Some of the props make sense - they are interesting, it is possible to handicap them, and there is a potential for profit. On the other hand, there are a whole lot of strange, trivial, bizarre props out there. What I'm saying is that there are some odd Super Bowl bets. As I was combing through the long lists of props looking for value these are a few that jumped out that definitely struck me as odd. I've obviously been spending too much time looking at them, though, because I'm actually giving some more consideration than they probably deserve:

Super Bowl Proposition Bets
by Trevor Whenham - 01/25/2008
Every year the sportsbooks offer more and more Super Bowl propositions for bettors to play. There are a couple of good reasons for this - the public love them, and they are, for the most part, a sucker's bet. The public blindly pours money into them and the books make a fortune because of the increased juice. Luckily, I'm a bit of a sucker, so I am of the belief that there can be value found in some of the propositions if you look hard enough. Hey, an astute handicapper has a better chance playing these than winning one of those Super Bowl squares pools. Here are 15 Super Bowl proposition bets that jumped out at me on first glance as having potential value (all odds taken from Bodog):

Top 10 Super Bowl Runners Up
by Robert Ferringo - 01/25/2008
If the New York Giants manage to somehow score a miraculous victory over the New England Patriots on Feb. 3 in Super Bowl XLII they will have earned one of the most improbable upsets in the history of The Big Game. Such an upset would also lead to another consequence: it would put the 2007 New England Patriots at the top of the list of The Best Super Bowl Losers Ever.

Ranking the Super Bowls
by Trevor Whenham - 01/25/2008
The Super Bowl isn't always a good game. Sometimes, in fact, it is a real stinker. I'm not anticipating a life-changing game that I will remember forever this year. There have been, though, some truly memorable games played. Here is my attempt, based on memory and what I have read, at ranking the Super Bowls, or at least the 10 best. I'm not going to worry about one specific element that made them so good, because each game had its own strengths.

Greatest Team Not to Win a Super Bowl
by Robert Ferringo - 01/25/2008
"Wide right." I am willing to bet that you know exactly what that statement is in reference to. You know the team, you know the players, and you know the setup. But what you may not know is that the 1990-91 Buffalo Bills are, in my opinion, the Greatest NFL Team Not To Win The Super Bowl. Their 20-19 loss to the New York Giants in Miami still echoes in NFL history, with the game being considered one of the best ever and Scott Norwood's missed field goal one of the league's defining moments.

Ranking the Super Bowl Teams
by Robert Ferringo - 01/25/2008
There's been a lot of talk lately about whether or not the New England Patriots are the Greatest Team of All Time. Clearly this is one of the questions on everyone's mind heading into the Super Bowl on Feb. 3 in Glendale, AZ and I think it's an underlying issue that's driving betting in the Big Game. So I took some time away from Super Bowl handicapping and making those Super Bowl square grids for my party next Sunday and decided that ranking the Super Bowl teams could be fun.

Super Bowl Betting Trends
by Trevor Whenham - 01/24/2008
With the Super Bowl over a week away, we still have all the time in the world to analyze the players and the teams that are actually in the game. If we started our Super Bowl handicapping now in a serious way we would be bored stiff by the time the game finally rolls around. In the meantime, we might as well thoroughly confuse ourselves by looking at the multitude of historical trends we can dig up about the game and the teams involved. I'd normally never handicap this way, but then there is nothing normal about the Super Bowl. Here are eight of the more interesting random trends to consider for the big game:

Not Yet Ready to Jump on Eli Bandwagon
by Robert Ferringo - 01/24/2008
Every time I watch a New York Giants game with one of my friends that is a fan of the G-Men I always say the same thing when Eli Manning's mug shows up on the screen: there is your fearless leader.

Betting on the Super Bowl Coin Toss
by Trevor Whenham - 01/23/2008
Super Bowl handicapping is serious stuff that takes a lot of time and study. Betting on the Super Bowl coin toss is a sure sign that you are a degenerate. Thousands of you are going to do it, though. The lure of betting on heads or tails, and kick or receive will be too much to resist. The gratification is instant, and it can give you extra money to bet at halftime. Not to mention the bragging rights when you can say that you nailed it to all your drunken buddies. The coin flip is, of course, completely random. That shouldn't stop us from doing some analysis of what has happened in the past to look for an edge, though, should it? After all, we have two weeks to kill, so there's time to analyze everything.

Super Bowl Handicapping
by Robert Ferringo - 01/18/2008
Super Bowl handicapping is a completely different animal than handicapping games during the regular season in the National Football League. The Super Bowl is the marquee event on the Gambling Calendar, and everything from how the line is set to what triggers line movements is unique to any other normal game and should be approached from an atypical angle by recreational bettors.
