Ten Thoughts About the Preakness Lineup
by Trevor Whenham - 05/16/2008
After almost two weeks of speculation and hand-wringing the field is finally set for the second leg of the Triple Crown, the Preakness Stakes. The story is as we expected it would be from soon after the Kentucky Derby - we have one outstanding horse, and a bunch of others that don't seem to measure up on paper. The one surprise given the dominance of Big Brown is that the field is as big as it is - the 13 horses that will enter the starting gate is just one horse below the maximum allowed in the race.

It's All Big Brown in a Cast of 13 at Pimlico
by Greg Melikov - 05/15/2008
There are 13 horses going in the 133rd Preakness, but Big Brown is the Big Dog. The son of Boundary was installed as the 1-2 early choice for Saturday's Big Race.

Some Options For Value in the Preakness
by Trevor Whenham - 05/14/2008
It's not entirely inevitable that Big Brown is going to win the Preakness - if recent history has taught us anything it's that anything can happen in this race. What is inevitable, though, is that he is going to go off at a ridiculously low price. The addition of Gayego, the Arkansas Derby winner that many liked heading into the Derby and some will still stick with despite a troubled 17th place finish in that race, will draw a little attention away from the favorite.

After the Favorite, Preakness Field a Shame
by Robert Ferringo - 05/13/2008
"They're scared." That was my initial thought when I first scanned the projected field for the 2008 Preakness Stakes, the second leg of horse racing's Triple Crown, which will be run at 6 p.m., on Saturday at Pimlico Race Course in Pimlico, Md. My first thought was that Big Brown's dominating win at Churchill Downs just two short weeks ago was enough to have these thoroughbreds shaking in their horseshoes.

Preakness Handicapping Systems
by Greg Melikov - 05/13/2008
I recall what one handicapping expert said: "There's no single successful horse racing wagering strategy, and that's a good thing."

Preakness Fastest Time: Three Share the Distinction
by Greg Melikov - 05/12/2008
On May 19, 1973, Secretariat broke alertly in the Preakness, but was taken back to sixth and last. Then jockey Ron Turcotte, sensing the pace was slow, gunned the Kentucky Derby winner to the lead.

Only Two Derby Horses Possible for the Preakness
by Trevor Whenham - 05/07/2008
Normally at this time of year we are getting ready to watch at least a small handful of horses that ran in the Kentucky Derby try again in the Preakness. That's clearly not the case - Derby winner Big Brown is the only horse confirmed for a trip to Baltimore, and Recapturetheglory is the only other horse that is even under consideration. If those other horses aren't going to the Preakness then what are they going to do? Here's a look:

Many Positives for Big Brown to Win Triple Crown
by Trevor Whenham - 05/07/2008
Can Big Brown win the Triple Crown? I sure hope so. We haven't had a Triple Crown winner since Affirmed pulled it off, and I am pretty desperate for one. For the past couple of decades I have suffered a mini-breakdown every time the Derby winner has lost on the trail and it's not pretty, so I am sure that all the people who know me well are even more hopeful than I am. Every year at this point in the process I am convinced that this is the year that the heartbreak ends (except for when Giacomo won - he didn't stand a chance), so it doesn't mean much when I say that I like the chances this year.

Preakness Big Brown's Race to Lose
by Trevor Whenham - 05/07/2008
We can learn a little bit about the second leg of the Triple Crown from re-watching the first leg, but not much. What we can see is that Big Brown is a total and utter freak who should have no trouble with the distance of the Preakness or the field (pretty much regardless of who is in it). What we can't see from the Derby, though, is how any of the other Preakness horses might perform. That's because, in a dismal development, it seems likely that Big Brown will be the only one of the 20 horses in the Derby field who is going on to the next race.

2008 Preakness Picks
After the dominating performance by Big Brown in the Kentucky Derby, expect all the news to focus on him. This horse will be the clear cut favorite in the Preakness and one would have to like him better at the shorter distance. This field will feature numerous newcomers because as it stands now there will only be one holdover from the Kentucky Derby besides the champion.
