Playing the NBA Stock Market: Buy or Sell
by Josh Nagel - 12/15/2008
A little more than a quarter way through the NBA season, some teams are just starting to hit their stride while others are cooling off after a hot start. For the most part, the early-season guesswork has given way to fairly clear picture of each team's potential.
But fortunes have a way of changing quickly in the NBA, so it's never a bad idea to take stock of which teams might have momentum on their side and others that look poised for a downturn.
Here is a snapshot of the NBA in this week's Buy or Sell:
Buy
Orlando Magic - The Dwight Howard-led Magic are heating up, with eight wins and covers in their past 10 games. Similar to last season , the Magic are showing moxie for winning on the road and have done so in impressive fashion, winning six of their past seven road games, including four straight.
Cleveland Cavaliers -So long as the Cavaliers are winning and covering 80 percent of the time, it's kind of difficult to bump them from the Buy list. Despite a loss to Atlanta in their last outing, they have been this year's unexpected NBA cash cow. Prior to Saturday's loss, Cleveland had won and gotten the money in 11 consecutive games.
Denver Nuggets - The Nuggets have quietly heated up, winning six of their last seven while covering in five. In the process they have shown an ability to do something they never did in the Allen Iverson era by getting an occasional stop on defense.
Sell
Golden State Warriors - The Warriors might have the worst defense the NBA has ever seen, and that's saying something consider performances by the Mavericks and Nuggets in recent years. But after giving up 119 points to a short-handed Rockets team to bring its average to a league-worst 111.6 points per game, it's clear that coach Don Nelson's run-and-gun style is mostly fun for the opposing team.
Dallas Mavericks - Although the Mavericks have reversed their dreadful start, things haven't got a whole better for their backers. Dallas is just barely getting by teams it should handle with ease, and the result is just two covers in its last seven games despite winning six of them straight up.
Miami Heat - Similar to Dallas, the Heat have struggled to put away inferior opponents at home and they have subsequently been a disappointment at the cashier's cage. The Heat have gotten the money just twice in their past 10 contests despite winning six of them.
