The Indianapolis 500 features 33 cars running at an average speed of about 150 miles per hour, and they all want to win. It's not a wonder that there are often accidents, and that those Indy 500 accidents often don't end well. No one wants to see anyone get seriously hurt or worse, but most sports fans would be lying if the said that they didn't tune into the Indy 500 at least partly so that they can see some wrecks. When it comes to Indy 500 accidents there have been some real doozies through the years. This may be the most morbid article I have ever written, but here is a look at some of the more remarkable Indy 500 accidents over the years.

Indy 500 Drivers

The 92nd Indianapolis 500 is on Sunday, May 25. For the Indy 500 drivers, and those who want to be, the month leading up to the race is the ultimate endurance test. The three weeks before the big race involves practice, times trials, qualification, and the most scrutinized open wheel racing gets all year. This year, as always, there are more potential Indy 500 drivers than there are spots in the race. There are 33 spots in the starting grid, and there are 37 entered drivers and four more cars without designated drivers that are all vying to be there when the race finally gets underway. The 92nd running of the Indianapolis 500 is scheduled for Sunday, May 25 at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in Indiana. 50th Daytona 500 Predictions

Fan favorite Dale Earnhardt, Jr. has shrugged off an 0-62 losing streak like last year's ugly red fire-retardant suit to go 2-2 at SpeedWeeks with his new team, Hendrick Motorsports, winning both the Budweiser Shootout and Gatorade 150 and earning an eerie No. 3 spot in the grid for the Daytona 500, putting HMS in two of the top three spots. However, no driver has ever won the Budweiser Shootout, Gatorade 150 and the Daytona 500.

Daytona 500 Odds and Analysis

The 50th running of the Daytona 500 will take place at 3:30 p.m., Sunday, Feb. 17 at the Daytona International Speedway.
