Breeders' Cup Handicapping: Ignore the New Surface
by Trevor Whenham - 10/23/2008
One of the biggest stories heading into the Breeders' Cup at Santa Anita this year is the surface the majority of the races will be run on. This is the first time in the 25-year history of racing's biggest day that the main track events have been held on a synthetic surface instead of on dirt. Santa Anita has a Pro-Ride surface, a substance developed in Australia. To further complicate things, this track is very new, so we don't know how it will react, or how horses react to it. Santa Anita initially installed a Cushion Track surface in 2007, but there were issues with the consistency of the track and its drainage ability.

The Top Contenders and Challengers in 25th Breeders' Cup
by Greg Melikov - 10/23/2008
The Breeders' Cup is greater than the sum of its races. The number of contests is so overwhelming I had to pass on several of the 14 races.

Big Breeders' Cup Fields Mean Higher Payoffs in Exotics
by Greg Melikov - 10/22/2008
The fuller the fields, the larger the returns on exotic bets. Returns are significantly higher in Breeders' Cup races. The 25th edition will be no exception.

Santa Anita Main Track Poses Handicapping Challenge
by Greg Melikov - 10/15/2008
Eight of the 14 Breeders' Cup races pose a handicapping puzzle for horseplayers. First, what do you look for since this is the first time in BC's 25-year history that those races previously staged on the dirt will be run over a synthetic surface?

Silver-Anniversary Breeders' Cup Feature New Wrinkles
by Greg Melikov - 10/08/2008
The 25th Breeders Cup World Championships has several new wrinkles that will affect handicapping and wagering. There will be 14 races spread over two days, including eight Grade 1s. Oct. 24 features five contests for the gals, including the $2 million BC Ladies Classic, previously known as the Distaff.

2008 Breeders' Cup Preview
by Trevor Whenham - 10/07/2008
The Kentucky Derby might be more prestigious, but no racing event packs anywhere near the star power or prize money that the Breeders' Cup does. For the second-straight year, the event has been stretched to two days. On Oct. 24, fillies and mares will have their day in the sun in a series of races, then on Oct. 25 the big card goes down, culminating in the $5 million Breeders' Cup Classic. Both days will take place at Santa Anita in Arcadia, California. That presents a new level of intrigue to the event - the track spent the summer installing a new synthetic Pro-ride surface after their last surface failed, so handicappers will have little sense of how the track will perform.

Basics of Horse Race Betting
by T.O Whenham - 01/08/2008
Horse racing isn't nearly as popular as it used to be, so there are a lot of seasoned sports bettors out there who don't know the basics of horse race betting. If that's you then you are truly missing out - the team sports are great, but horse racing offers more challenge, more chances to win in a relatively short period, a bigger variety of ways to get action, and way more chances to score a huge profit while taking a reasonable risk. That's not to say that horse race betting is easy, though. In fact, it's one of the most frustrating, perplexing and confounding things you can do.

Types of Horse Racing Bets
by T.O Whenham - 01/07/2008
At first glance it seems like there are a huge number of different types of horse racing bets. Once you figure it out, though, it's really quite simple. Here's a quick look at the different types of horse racing bets available at most tracks in North America:

Rules for Horse Betting
by T.O Whenham - 01/07/2008
Rules, rules, rules. For the most part they are just annoying, but when they help you decide what bets to make and which ones to avoid they can be extremely valuable. If you're not a follower of horse racing, or even if you are, here are six simple rules for horse betting that could help you out the next time you head to the track. Obviously, this is far from a complete list - a complete set of the rules for horse betting would take up a hundred volumes. These are a good place to start, though, and they will at least get you thinking.

Exotic Wagering - Explanation Of Bets
by T.O Whenham - 01/04/2008
When it comes to horse racing, exotic wagering generally refers to any bet that involves more than one horse on a single ticket. There are two basic types of exotic wagers. An intra-race exotic involves multiple horses in the same race, while an inter-race exotic involves horses in multiple consecutive races.
