NHL Betting: The Week's Biggest Stories
by Trevor Whenham - 11/17/2008
We're settling into the slow, steady rhythms of the middle of the NHL season when nothing happens too quickly. This is when we start to learn which teams are here to stay, and which ones are just killing time until golf season starts. To an outsider that may all sound a bit dull, but to hockey fans this is heaven. It's also pretty exciting when there are owners like Oren Koules in Tampa Bay that are committed to doing the ridiculous and bizarre. This week, let's take a look at how things are going in Tampa and Pittsburgh.

NHL Betting: The Week's Biggest Stories
by Trevor Whenham - 10/27/2008
The NHL season is brutal, and it's far from rare to see players go down to injury. It's striking, though, how many key players will be missing significant action already--we're only about 10 percent of the way through the season. Injuries are obviously crucial to bettors looking to make an informed decision, so I thought we would spend this week looking at some of the key absences teams are facing and their potential impacts:

Kontinental Hockey League Betting
by Trevor Whenham - 10/23/2008
If you like the betting opportunities that hockey has to offer, there is no reason to limit yourself to just the NHL. There are other leagues full of solid talent to bet on, and lots of online books you can bet on them with. Chief among the options is the KHL, or the Kontinental Hockey League. This league, in its first year of operation, replaced the Russian Super League. It ambitiously wants to be the best hockey league in the world.

2008-09 NHL Betting Preview
by Trevor Whenham - 10/07/2008
The NHL season is just around the corner. Actually, it has sort of started - four teams have played two games each in Europe. That only barely counts, though. The real action gets going this week, beckoning in eight months of slashing, checking, punching, and maybe even a little skating and scoring. To help get you back into the swing of things, here's a quick preview of some of the key stories for the NHL season ahead:

NHL Starts Season Off in Europe
by Trevor Whenham - 10/06/2008
The NHL season is here. Finally. I'm a Canadian living in Canada. It seems like sports fans in my country go into hibernation every June when the Stanley Cup is hoisted, and only crawl out of their caves now. Sure, people care about the NFL and, to a degree, baseball up here. It's not the same, though. Those sports are just diversions, while for many people up here hockey is religion. I'm not nearly as obsessed as some, but the ice still flows in my blood. I also love hockey as a betting sport - it is, at times, predictable, and the betting volume is low enough that value can still be found.

Melrose to Lighting: A NHL Coaching Joke?
by Max Powers - 06/02/2008
Recent reports have named Barry Melrose as the next coach of the Tampa Bay Lighting. Yes, this is the same Tampa Bay Lighting that won a Stanley Cup under John Tortorella in 2004. Tororella is still under contract to coach the Lighting next season but the team is in the process of being solid to Oren Koules. Many believe Koules is looking for a fresh start and has tabbed the Mullet as the winning answer.

Stanley Cup Finals Preview
by Trevor Whenham - 05/21/2008
After several years that have failed to entertain anyone outside the hardcore hockey fans, the NHL finally has a Stanley Cup Finals worthy of their dreams. In the Pittsburgh Penguins they have a young and exciting team that is helmed by Sidney Crosby, the most marketable star in the league. In the Detroit Red Wings they have an experienced, respected team of stars that play in the strongest hockey market outside of Canada. There isn't another matchup that would have been better for the league, and the much-improved TV ratings are proof of it. Beyond just the business side, this matchup should also be a dream for fans and bettors. Both teams can score, they are both fun to watch, and they offer the best possible chance of an interesting final.

World Hockey Championships Betting
by Trevor Whenham - 05/06/2008
The World Hockey Championships is underway for the 72nd time, but a lot of sports fans wouldn't know that it had ever happened. There are a few reasons for this. First, of course, it's hockey - as popular outside Canada, Sweden, Russia and small pockets of a few other countries as an ice cream cone would be at the North Pole. Second, though it is taking place in Canada this year, this is the first time since 1962 that it has occurred outside of Europe. Despite those reasons and several more, though, this tournament is for real. It is the annual gathering of all the superstar players who aren't superstar enough to carry their NHL teams into the playoffs, or to win once they get there.

Handicapping Game Sevens
by Trevor Whenham - 04/23/2008
There were three game sevens in the first round of the NHL playoffs, and there will inevitably be more in coming rounds. The NBA playoffs are also under way, and they always feature some great seventh games - though perhaps not in this first round because it isn't shaping up to be particularly competitive. As I sat down last night to watch two consecutive game sevens on the ice I started to think about the rules that go into handicapping the ultimate must-win scenarios. As I did that, here are the five rules that came to mind. Not surprisingly, most of these are pretty basic and straight forward:

Betting the NHL Playoffs
by Trevor Whenham - 04/04/2008
After a seemingly endless regular season, the NHL playoffs are now just around the corner. For many bettors, that means that they will be paying attention to hockey for the first time all year. The playoff fields and the first round matchups are not yet set, but that doesn't mean that we can't start to think about the strategies which will lead us to success at the betting windows (or their virtual equivalents). If you will be wading into betting Canada's favorite sport for the first time this year in the next couple of weeks then you will want to keep these six tips in mind.

NHL Betting - Regulation and OT
by Trevor Whenham - 01/24/2008
If you're not betting on the NHL you are missing out on a big opportunity, but more on that in a second. If you are betting on hockey there are two different full game bets that are available, and some books offer both. You can make the 60 minute bet, which includes only the regulation time play, or you can bet on the whole game including any overtime that is played, and the shootout if it's necessary. Each choice has its individual strengths and weaknesses, and the smart bettor has to decide which play makes sense in each case.
