2009 BCS National Championship Game Preview
by Robert Ferringo - 12/31/2008
I asked this question in my Cotton Bowl Preview and I'm going to ask it again: which conference was the best in college football this year, the SEC or the Big 12?

2009 Orange Bowl Preview
by Matt Severance - 12/30/2008
It's the first BCS bowl in school history for Cincinnati, which is 5-4 all-time in bowls and has won the past three. The Big East has won three consecutive BCS bowl games. The Hokies are in the Orange Bowl for the second straight year - they lost to Kansas on Jan. 3, 2008 - and are 7-14 all-time in the postseason.

2009 Rose Bowl Preview
by Robert Ferringo - 12/26/2008
The Rose Bowl. It's a staple of the season, like questionable New Year's Eve decisions and the inevitable regret-filled New Year's Day hangover. And this season's Rose Bowl promises to be yet another classic clash between the boys from the Big Ten and the champs of the proud Pac-10.

2009 Fiesta Bowl Preview
by Robert Ferringo - 12/26/2008
One team wants to prove that it's the best in the country and worthy of being a national champion. The other has repeatedly proven that it's not.

2008 Music City Bowl Preview
by Matt Severance - 12/26/2008
Boston College is the anti-Notre Dame in bowls (OK, last crack at the Irish since they ended their nine-game bowl losing streak on Christmas Eve), having won a national-best eight consecutive bowl games.

2008 Humanitarian Bowl Preview
by Matt Severance - 12/26/2008
This is Nevada's eighth bowl all-time (3-5) and fourth in a row. The Wolf Pack have fallen to New Mexico and Miami, respectively, in their past two bowl games. That Hurricanes loss came in Boise when this bowl was called the MPC Computers Bowl.

2008 Champs Sports Bowl Preview
by Matt Severance - 12/26/2008
This will be Wisconsin's first non-January bowl game since the 2003 Music City Bowl and first bowl game against a school from outside the SEC since 2002. The Badgers are 10-9 all-time in bowls, including losing the Outback Bowl to Tennessee last season.

2009 Capital One Bowl Preview
by Robert Ferringo - 12/22/2008
In most circles a New Year's Day bowl game against a fellow Top 20 team from a major BCS conference warrants some enthusiasm. Maybe even some excitement. But when you closed out the previous year as the No. 2 team in the country, brought back to Heisman hopefuls, and opened the present season as the consensus No. 1 team in the land and the favorite for a national title, the Capital One Bowl just doesn't cut it.

2008 Hawaii Bowl Preview
by Matt Severance - 12/19/2008
The Irish are 13-15 in bowls, and it has been well documented that they haven't won one since the Cotton Bowl on New Year's Day in 1994. That's an NCAA-record nine losses in a row. Notre Dame didn't qualify for a bowl last year and was routed in its last bowl by LSU, 41-14, on Jan. 3, 2007, in the Sugar Bowl - Brady Quinn's final game.

2009 Gator Bowl Preview
by Trevor Whenham - 12/19/2008
The two teams here are in decidedly different places. It was a year that Clemson fans would certainly like to forget, and one that has finally shown enough promise in Nebraska for their fans to think that the glory days they remember from the distant past may not be gone for good. Clemson was supposed to make a BCS bowl after starting the season as the No. 9-ranked hope of the ACC.

2009 International Bowl Preview
by Trevor Whenham - 12/19/2008
A month after one of Buffalo's teams came to Canada, the other team is on their way. I think I speak for every Canadian when I say that I hope that this game isn't nearly as boring as the Bills game was. Buffalo comes to Toronto on the heels of their first MAC Championship, and they will be playing their first ever bowl game. UConn is more experienced with bowls, but only slightly.

2009 Liberty Bowl Preview
by Josh Nagel - 12/19/2008
This game involves a meeting between one team that went from potential BCS Buster to unlikely Conference USA Champion and an SEC club that was decimated by injuries and seemed to struggle to keep its head above water all season. The fact that Kentucky is a slight favorite here shows the ultimate respect the Wildcats are being given for playing the rugged SEC.

2008 New Mexico Bowl Preview
by Trevor Whenham - 12/19/2008
These teams used to be old rivals - Colorado State was in the WAC until leaving for the MWC a decade ago. Now they don't see each other nearly as often. Colorado State owns a 6-5 lead in the all-time series, and they have won the last two. The underdog is 4-1 ATS in the last five games.

2009 Sugar Bowl Preview
by Trevor Whenham - 12/19/2008
The original BCS Buster is back in the BCS to try to do it all again. The last time Utah was here no one really knew what to expect, but when it was all said and done the legend of Urban Meyer was on a rocket ship straight up. This time around they are nearly the same degree of outsider. They'll find it hard to find widespread respect against one of the most storied programs in college football, though.

2008 Sun Bowl Preview
by Nicholas Tolomeo - 12/19/2008
A game that has traditionally been the redheaded stepchild when compared to the Rose Bowl, the Sun Bowl had normally invited the Rose Bowl's leftovers by picking the runner ups from the Big Ten and the Pac-10 to play on New Year's Eve. The last two years, however, a team from the Big 12 and Big East has replaced the Big Ten representative.

Coaching Uncertainty in Bowl Season
by Trevor Whenham - 12/18/2008
There is a challenge facing bettors as we get ready for bowl season that has become an increasing problem every year - the revolving door that separates coaches from teams as they head into the bowl season. There are the coaches that have been fired, and left with an interim coach in his place. There's the coaches who have left for a new job, or those who have a new job but are still sticking around with the old team for their bowl.

2008 Texas Bowl Preview
by Trevor Whenham - 12/18/2008
This is the third edition of the Texas Bowl, which replaced the Houston Bowl. You may remember the inaugural edition because of the outcry - upstart Rutgers made the game, and for a while it seemed that most Rutgers fans in New York and New Jersey would not be able to watch the game because it was on the NFL Network. Rutgers won that game, and TCU won last year.

2008 Armed Forces Bowl Preview
by Josh Nagel - 12/18/2008
This bowl game is a bit unusual in that it pits two teams against each other who already have squared off once this season. But hey, if you go see a really good movie once, do you really mind seeing it again? Especially if there's a chance that the ending might be different? This likely is what the Armed Forces Bowl committee had in mind when it picked this matchup.

2008 New Orleans Bowl Preview
by Matt Severance - 12/18/2008
Southern Miss is 8-10 in bowls and 2-0 in the New Orleans Bowl, beating North Texas, 31-10, in 2004 and Arkansas State, 31-19, in 2005 under former coach Jeff Bower. This is the third bowl overall and second New Orleans Bowl for Troy, which routed Rice in the 2006 game and lost in the 2004 Silicon Valley Classic.

2008 Insight Bowl Preview
by Trevor Whenham - 12/17/2008
These teams may have the same record, but they have arrived at it in very different ways. Minnesota is a team on a slow-but-steady rise under new coach Tim Brewster, the first competent head coach they have had in a long while. They were a pitiful 1-11 last year, so this year, Brewster's second, qualifies as an absolute miracle. Kansas, on the other hand, is on the way down from a blip of excellence last year.

2008 Alamo Bowl Preview
by Trevor Whenham - 12/17/2008
No this is not a misprint - Northwestern is actually bowl eligible. The last two seasons they have not only missed a bowl, but they haven't even come close to being a good team. Not only are they in, but they are even the higher ranked team here. The game features two teams on opposite arcs - Northwestern is far better than they were expected to be, while Missouri has been a significant disappointment in the second half.

2008 Emerald Bowl Preview
by Trevor Whenham - 12/17/2008
You may as well just call this one a home game for Cal. The Bears have a 20-minute bus ride to get to the game, while the Hurricanes have to cross the country. Miami was 4-2 ATS on the road, though this is by far their longest trip. Cal was a perfect 7-0 straight up and ATS when they had their home crowd cheering for them as they will in this one.

2008 Chick-fil-A Bowl Preview
by Nicholas Tolomeo - 12/17/2008
This is a much-anticipated game between two teams heading in different directions. Georgia Tech is better than expected in the first season under new coach Paul Johnson and his triple option attack while LSU, the defending national champion, is still trying to figure out what went wrong this year. This New Year's Eve tradition is always one of the most watched and well-attended bowl games of the year.

2008 Papajohns.com Bowl Preview
by Josh Nagel - 12/17/2008
This is a compelling matchup between two teams that looked to be headed nowhere in a hurry in the early going, only to see remarkable turnarounds that ultimately ended in a reward with this bowl berth. N.C. State started its season with an embarrassing 34-0 loss to South Carolina on national television, and it subsequently struggled to cultivate any sort of offense while trotting out a carousel of ineffective quarterbacks.

College Bowl Game Betting: Top Five Value Games

Heisman Trophy Betting: Handicapping the Race
by Trevor Whenham - 12/11/2008
It has not been a good month for Texas Tech. Their blowout loss to Oklahoma not only knocked them out of the BCS and the public consciousness, but it also turned Graham Harrell from the Heisman front-runner to a guy who didn't even get invited to the ceremony in New York on Saturday. That's got to be especially hard to take considering only three players were invited - the smallest possible number, and fewer than most years.

College Bowl Betting Advice
by Robert Ferringo - 12/09/2008
Unfortunately, I won't be getting a Golden Goose for Christmas. And by "Golden Goose" I mean that this won't be the year that I again find the cure-all for holiday bowl betting. You know, that magical system that produces nothing but winners and wonder on every bowl game for which it's applicable; That system that goes a perfect 33-0 and correctly passes out winners on every single bowl game. Nope. Not this year. But maybe if I'm a good boy Santa will bring it to me next season.

Primer for Bowl Game Handicapping
by Robert Ferringo - 12/09/2008
Surprising upsets, a wide-open title race, and rivalries that still make folks seriously consider burning down their neighbor's house; yup, we are once again immersed in an exhilarating season of college football. However, as you read this sentence, in some dark, dank cubicle, some sanctimonious sportswriter is banging away at his crusty keyboard. He is spitting and muttering as he cranks out the obligatory College-Football-Needs-A-Playoff story.

Thursday Night Football: Louisville at Rutgers
by Matt Severance - 12/04/2008
Charlie Weis and the Notre Dame Fighting Irish will a have close eye on tonight's game, as a Rutgers victory over Louisville will give the Big East its full allotment of seven-win bowl-eligible teams and would send the 6-6 Irish scurrying to find another bowl. Also, if Rutgers wins, assuring it of a bowl berth, the Scarlet Knights would become just the seventh team in NCAA history to earn one after a 1-5 start. They are a 10.5-point favorite on BookMaker.

College Football Betting: Handicapping Conference Championship Games
by Trevor Whenham - 12/02/2008
We are entering a short but exciting period in college football - the conference championship games. The Big 12, ACC, and SEC, along with Conference USA, and the MAC, all have title games this weekend. Though there are only five games, and they all feature teams in different circumstances, past games have taught us some lessons that can be applied to this year's games. Here are six concepts to explore as you are getting ready for the last weekend of football before we get to go bowling:

College Football Betting: Teams With Extra Motivation This Week
by Trevor Whenham - 11/27/2008
For many teams this is the last week of the college football season. That means the start of the postseason for some, but for a lot of players the only thing happening after this weekend is a return to the life of a normal student. The finality of this weekend can create some opportunities for bettors, though. There are inevitably going to teams that are going to be motivated to play their best, but which will fly below the public's radar.

Rivalry Week in College Football
by Nicholas Tolomeo - 11/27/2008
When it comes time for the big rivalry games in college football you always hear the talking heads on TV saying "when these teams meet you can throw the record book out the window." I suggest holding onto that record book, especially if your office is more than three stories off the ground.

Thursday Night Football: Texas A&M at Texas
by Matt Severance - 11/26/2008
It's not really a matter of whether Texas beats Texas A&M on Thursday night in Austin. Most people assume that's a forgone conclusion, and the Longhorns are 35-point favorites on SBG Global. It's more a matter of how good UT looks in its victory and how the rest of the weekend shakes out that determines where the Horns play next.

College Football Betting: Ranking the Conferences
by Trevor Whenham - 11/20/2008
The regular season is winding down in college football. The Big Ten finishes this week, and others will follow soon. Before we get into the conference championship season, let's take a few minutes to look at the six major conferences and rank them from strongest to weakest. This is purely subjective, of course. Things break down into three distinct groups - the elites, the middle-of-the-pack, and the bottom of the barrel. Without further ado:

A College Football Playoff Would Be No Better Than BCS
by Trevor Whenham - 11/13/2008
I am sick to death of the talk of a college football playoff. BCS bashing is the favorite activity of the media and college football fans. I don't agree. I think that a playoff is a bad idea for a lot of reasons. That's not to say that I think the BCS is perfect. It's far from it. It's just that the playoff would be no better. Winston Churchill said that democracy is the worst form of government except for all the others that have been tried. That's pretty much how I feel about the BCS. Don't agree with me? Maybe you will after I lay out some of my arguments:

College Football Betting: Teams That Could Quit
by Trevor Whenham - 11/12/2008
The Tennessee Volunteers put forth one of the most disgusting performances of the year this weekend against Wyoming. There is nothing worse you can say about a team than that they quit. The Vols quit. Badly. Sure, they have excuses - the season is totally lost, they won't be bowl eligible, the coach is on the way out, and it has to be hard to get up in the morning. Still, there is absolutely no excuse whatsoever that can explain losing at home when you are favored by 27. Wyoming was up 13-0 at the half, and cruised to a 13-7 win in a totally unwatchable game. Tennessee is a total and utter mess.

Mid-Majors Where The Profits Lie for College Football Wagering
by Nicholas Tolomeo - 11/05/2008
With over 100 teams competing weekly in college football, games in the smaller conferences often get overlooked. Bettors generally shy away from teams they are unfamiliar with and games that may not be televised - and when there is not a high volume of handle on certain teams then the oddsmakers sometimes ignore these games as well. Injury reports, trends and weather reports for a battle of Conference USA cellar dwellers may not be as scrutinized by oddsmakers as a marquee Top 10 matchup between two BCS conference teams might be. Less public action on the games will also prevent large line movements from the opening line.

Thursday Night Football: TCU at Utah

Typical lack of respect for the Mountain West Conference: Arguably its biggest game in years, No. 10 Utah and No. 11 TCU, is relegated to some TV network you've never heard of while two slightly above average ACC teams, Maryland and Virginia Tech, get the national ESPN coverage.

College Football Betting: Five Value Teams Down the Stretch
by Trevor Whenham - 11/05/2008
As we get into the final stretches of the college football regular season, bettors are looking for every way to get an edge to pad their bankroll, or to salvage earlier setbacks. One way to do that is to put your faith in good teams. Not just any good team will do, though. The key is to look at teams that have three things: the proven ability to win and cover spreads, the schedule down the stretch to do well, and the motivation to win and win big.

Betting On Bad College Football Teams
by Trevor Whenham - 11/05/2008
There are still three or more games left for every college team in the country, but for several teams the season is already over. Several teams have already ensured that they will have a losing season, and that they have no chance of winning their conference or playing in a bowl game. For those teams the rest of the season is going to be a long, dreary march to the offseason. It can be tempting for bettors to write those teams off entirely--and often that is the right move--but sometimes these teams can be a decent bet despite their record and performance to date.

College Football Bowl Projections
by Nicholas Tolomeo - 11/05/2008
Trying to project anything in the world of college football usually makes people look foolish. The parity and recent rash of upsets over the past few years have made prognosticating the college football postseason a crapshoot. This late in the season, though, most of the frauds have been discovered and the best college football teams have risen to the top.

Oklahoma State Still Perfect Against the Spread
by Trevor Whenham - 10/31/2008
Last year the Jayhawks were the last college football team to fail to cover a game. They were perfect against the spread right up to the last game of the season against Missouri. This year just one team, Oklahoma State, a team Kansas covered against last year, has the ability to do better than that. The Cowboys are the only perfect ATS team remaining in the country. They are 7-1 straight up, but 7-0 ATS. As they have compiled that record the team has become one of the better stories of the season. They were supposed to be solid, but they are much better than that.

BCS Busters: Under the Radar
by Trevor Whenham - 10/30/2008
It's the fault of Utah and Boise State that we are obsessed with BCS Busters. Those two teams showed that teams from outside the major conferences can not only make it into big bowls, but also show that they belong there. Since at least the 2004 season, when Utah crushed Pittsburgh in the Fiesta Bowl, we have christened any team that wins a game or two in September a potential BCS Buster. This year East Carolina was a popular pick until they self-destructed.

BCS Championship Game Contenders
by Trevor Whenham - 10/29/2008
It's almost November, so, incredibly, it isn't too soon to start looking forward to the BCS Championship Game. As is the case every year at the end of October, we can't really know which teams are going to be there - there are too many possibilities. That doesn't mean, though, that we can't speculate. Here is a look at the teams that could be playing for all the glory at Dolphin Stadium in Miami on Jan. 8. The first three are more likely than the rest, but as we have seen in past years, anything can happen. They are arranged from the most likely participants in that game on down:

How Have No. 1 Teams Fared After Loss?
by Trevor Whenham - 10/16/2008
Twice this year I have become reasonably convinced that the No. 1 team in the country is, by a solid margin, the best team in the country. Both times those teams have promptly gone out and lost against a team they really should have been able to beat. Ouch. The latest team to prove me wrong is obviously Oklahoma. I'm past the immediate frustration of their loss, though I haven't yet decided which team will take their place in my mind. Of more immediate interest is trying to figure out how Oklahoma will react to losing their No. 1 status.

Football Betting: Early Week Line Movements
by Robert Ferringo - 10/14/2008

My Big 12 Rankings: Oklahoma Stays at No. 1
by Trevor Whenham - 10/14/2008
I've said it before, and I'll keep saying it until it's proven to be untrue - the Big 12 is the best conference in the country this year. Many people would say that that honor belongs to the SEC, but the Big 12 is deeper and more competitive. Just look at the numbers - they have four teams in the Top 8, including No. 1, and six in the Top 16. By comparison, the Top 16 has four SEC teams, two from the Big Ten, one Pac-10 squad, and three potential BCS-busters. Those six Big 12 teams are a combined 33-3. The Big 12 has a clear advantage.

College Football Betting: Untrustworthy Ranked Teams
by Trevor Whenham - 10/08/2008
When it comes to betting on college football, ranked teams have a mystique surrounding them. The public holds ranked teams in high regard, and will generally back them when they have the chance. In a lot of cases that works out well as the teams are good enough to overwhelm their opponents. Sometimes, though, the ranking is just an invitation for bettors to burn money. The teams might be winning their games, but they aren't doing it convincingly enough to pay their backers off. In other words, their ranking and the public attention that goes with it inflates their lines, and the teams aren't powerful enough to overcome the number.

BCS Formula for Bowl Games
by Jason Shimberg - 10/08/2008
BCS stands for Bowl Championship Series. College football does not have an end-of-season playoff series. Any team with a 6-5 record can play in a bowl game. The four BCS bowl games are the called Fiesta, Sugar, Orange, and Rose. These are the highest-profile games that feature only the top-ranked teams. The remaining games are now considered minor bowls. To figure out who gets to play, a mathematical BCS formula is used to rank the top 25 teams throughout the season. Each Monday, the BCS rankings are updated based on the teams' performances during the previous week. At the end of the regular season, the top two teams in the ratings play each other for the BCS National Championship.

Exercise Caution With Mid-Week Bets
by Indian Cowboy - 10/08/2008
With the WNBA season ending and baseball games becoming few-and-far-between, it seems the betting landscape is going to become barren during the week before we get to Thursday night football. And even on those weeknights, there are only a few games to bet on. But you have to look at the week's wagering opportunities in a broader perspective. We are all in this to make a profit in the long-term, so don't feel like you have to wager every day. There will be plenty of options over the weekend and professional bettors never make a play just to have "action".

College Football National Championship Futures

Top 10 teams USC, Florida, Georgia and Wisconsin all fell two weeks ago--as did South Florida this past week--and all these teams saw their odds to take home the biggest prize in college football skyrocket. The biggest winners of the latest chaotic weekends have been Oklahoma and Alabama, which sit No. 1 and No. 2, respectively, atop the AP Top 25 poll.

College Football Handicapping: Mid-Week Games
by Trevor Whenham - 10/02/2008
We are at the point in the college football season when we start to see Tuesday and Wednesday night games. Those games usually don't involve high-profile teams playing exciting games. On the other hand, they are football games, and any time there is a football game it's a good thing. If you are a bettor that finds the wait from Monday night to Saturday morning to be almost unbearable then you probably love these games. Playing the games well requires a bit of a different approach than other games, though. It's not like they are an entirely different sport, but you will do better betting on the games if you adjust your mindset a bit. Here's a look at five adjustments you might want to consider:

Thursday Night Football: Oregon State at Utah Preview
by Matt Severance - 10/01/2008
Think No. 15 Utah will be on upset alert Thursday night? After all, the 5-0 Utes will be facing Oregon State, which one week ago shocked top-ranked USC. However, the Beavers (2-2) are clearly a different team on the road, where they lost to Stanford and were routed by Penn State. Thus they are an 11.5-point underdog on SuperBook, with an over/under of 53.

Option Teams Paying Off For Backers
by Robert Ferringo - 09/29/2008
The Option Offense in football is one of the most venerable and classic nuances of America's New National Pastime. The Wishbone. The Wing T. The Single Wing. The very thought of The Option brings one back to Yesteryear, Better Days and Days of Yore. Those were simpler times - The Option reflects that - and a Golden Time when speakeasies, jazz, hard work and racism were at the fabric of American Society.

Ducks Can Still Compete Despite QB Woes
by Trevor Whenham - 09/25/2008
Imagine if someone tried to make you go to this movie - a bizarre string of freak injuries has ravaged a football team, so that all they are left with is their fifth string quarterback - a guy who wasn't supposed to play this year. He enters the game and no one expects much, but he throws three touchdowns and looks like a star. Sounds like brutal Disney crap, doesn't it? Well it would be if it weren't true. That is exactly what happened with the Oregon Ducks last weekend. A knee injury to their starter before the season, a concussion, another knee injury, and some terrible play by a freshman not ready for primetime led the Ducks to end Darron Thomas' redshirt season eight games too early.

Back BCS Busters at the Betting Window
by Nicholas Tolomeo - 09/22/2008
With a change in the BCS rules and the seasons that Utah, Boise State and Hawaii enjoyed the last few years a new word has been added to the college football vocabulary - 'BCS buster'. It's the name for a team outside of the six BCS power conferences that is a threat to qualify for a BCS Bowl.

How Teams Bounce Back From Blowouts
by Trevor Whenham - 09/19/2008
Every so often a result comes along in football that is unexpected for fans and absolutely humiliating for the teams involved. Right now I am, of course thinking of two instances. Ohio State was an underdog heading into USC, but few expected them to be so ridiculously outclassed as they were in the 35-3 drubbing. The Pac-10 ended up on the other side of a massacre, too. People knew BYU was good, but UCLA was coming off an upset of Tennessee and the Cougars had struggled against Washington, so even the biggest BYU fan wouldn't have believed that the final score would be 59-0. BYU dominated every aspect of the game so thoroughly that it can hardly be described.

Mountain West Conference
by Trevor Whenham - 09/18/2008
The Mountain West Conference may not get much attention or respect, but it's certainly riding high these days. Last Saturday, four teams from the conference played Pac-10 foes. A mismatch, right? Well, yes - if you are saying that the Pac-10 was outmatched. The Mountain West not only covered all four spreads, but they won all four games outright. Included in that group was Arizona State, a team ranked No. 14 coming into their game against UNLV, and Arizona and UCLA - two teams that had shown real signs of much-needed life earlier in the season. The win over the Sun Devils was the second victory over a ranked team for the conference on the season.

College Football Rankings: Top 10 Great Bet Early
by Nicholas Tolomeo - 09/16/2008
How accurate can college football pollsters be in ranking teams in the preseason? Many argue that the polls should not come out until four or five weeks in the season because preseason pollsters rely largely on what happened the previous year to make their assumptions. Many teams that are overrated fall quickly in the polls; but through bettors' eyes, the college football polls are never more accurate than they are in the first three weeks of the season.

Don't Overlook Kickers When Handicapping
by Trevor Whenham - 09/11/2008
Like a lot of curious football fans, I tuned into Brett Favre's debut with the Jets last weekend. It was more or less what I expected - decent, but not worth the three months of my life that were consumed by Favre talk. There was one particularly interesting aspect of the game, though. If you watched, or if you have been near a TV since to see the endlessly looping replays, you saw Favre heroically convert a 4th-and-13 into a touchdown. The fact that it was a very low percentage pass that he got very lucky on isn't the point.

Big Ten No Longer One-Horse Race
by Trevor Whenham - 09/11/2008
Remember when the Big Ten was supposed to be a one-team league? Ohio State was viewed as a highly elite team coming into the season, and the rest of the league seemed to have atrocious, insurmountable problems. My, how things can change in two weeks. Ohio State has had two lackadaisical performances and an injury to their best player, and suddenly they are so far out of favor that they have gone from seven to 10.5-point underdogs against USC in three days. On the other hand, both Penn State and Wisconsin are turning heads with very impressive play, and people are already beginning to utter the previously unthinkable - maybe the Buckeyes aren't destined to win the Big Ten after all. But can that happen? Have things changed that much in just two weeks? Here's a look.

Ohio State in Unfamiliar Role as Big Dog
by Nicholas Tolomeo - 09/09/2008
Two trains of thought will be in play when college football heavyweights No. 1 USC and No. 3 Ohio State clash Saturday evening at 8 p.m. EST. What is a better way to prepare for a season-changing non-conference game? Traveling across the country to play a middle-of-the-road team from a BCS Conference like USC did when they traveled to Virginia to throttle the Cavaliers, 52-7, or staying at home to play two neighboring schools, one from the MAC and the other from Division 1-AA like the Buckeyes did?

East Carolina Goes For Second Big Upset In As Many Weeks
by Robert Ferringo - 09/05/2008
What is "The Bubble"? The Bubble is that magical land where beer flows like wine and where momentum and adrenaline pump through the blood of players, coaches, and fans alike. The Bubble is a special place, and when teams are in it they can do no wrong, feel no pain, and lose no game. Spreads are incidental when a team enters The Bubble. Any sense of logic, proportion, reason, normalcy, or common decency is thrown overboard in The Bubble. It is madness, it is chaos, and it can either be the best friend or the worst enemy of any sports bettor.

Seven Reasons Why USC Deserves No. 1 Ranking
by Trevor Whenham - 09/05/2008
Whether you like it or not, USC is destined to have a pretty darned good season. They had questions coming into the 2008 campaign, but they went a long way towards dispelling those concerns in their dominating season-opening win over Virginia. If you missed it, the Trojans scheduled a potentially challenging opening game against the Cavaliers, a major conference opponent, unlike most other serious national contenders. It could have been close, but it really, really wasn't. USC won 52-7, and if possible it wasn't even as close as the score.

Big East Strong ATS Trends Out of Conference
by Nicholas Tolomeo - 09/05/2008
Out of all the BCS conferences the Big East has taken a beating in public perception more than any other league since Boston College, Virginia Tech and Miami bolted for the ACC in 2003 and 2004. The conference was left with only one real perennial contender in West Virginia with the rest of the conference being made up of struggling programs with once proud histories like Syracuse and Pittsburgh, fledgling Division 1-A newcomers like Connecticut and South Florida and former Conference USA teams like Cincinnati and Louisville. Not to mention a lowly Rutgers team that had always struggled.

College Rule Changes and Totals
by Trevor Whenham - 09/04/2008
Are you familiar with the current time clock rules in college football? I can't blame you if you aren't. After all, this is the third consecutive season in which they have changed dramatically. We'll get into he specifics in a second, but the important thing is that the changes have had an impact on not just the length of games as intended, but also the number of points scored in games. For bettors, and especially those who like to play totals, that's a big deal. A swing of just a few points per game on average can make a big difference in your profitability if you aren't paying attention to it.

Five Intriguing College Games This Weekend
by Trevor Whenham - 08/28/2008
College football starts tonight. It's now close enough that I am counting down by hours now instead of days. For people like me who think that college football is the greatest sport in existence then any games are welcomed and worth watching. More passive fans might say that things don't get interesting until later in the season when conference play starts. That might sort of be true for college basketball, but it certainly isn't true in football. Every game matters, and many teams face stiff tests right out of the gates. There are all sorts of intriguing games out there this weekend, but look at five that both provide a real challenge for bettors and will give us a good sense of what the season might hold for the teams involved:

2008 MAC Predictions
by Matt Severance - 08/27/2008
The Mid-American Conference always seems to pull a handful of upsets of BCS conference teams each season, especially against the Big Ten. Expect more of the same this year as the MAC could be the strongest its been in years with several veteran-laden squads. Yet perhaps the best part of this conference is that any team could win the title in any season. That said, we'll give it our best shot with 2008 MAC predictions:

UTEP at Buffalo Kicks Off the CFB Season
by Trevor Whenham - 08/27/2008
After nearly eight months of counting the days, college football season is back. Less than 24 hours from now teams will be taking the field, and the glorious, too short season will be underway. The long drought ends tomorrow when the first 14 games of the year are played. Four teams are scheduled to start at 7:00 p.m. ET, and if all goes cording to plan then the University of Texas-El Paso and Buffalo will kick off the season a couple of minutes before anyone else. That's not the flashiest game there is, and it certainly isn't the one that most people are looking forward to this weekend. It does, however, have the potential to be an intriguing game.

The AP Top 25 Vs. the Odds Poll
by Matt Foust - 08/27/2008
Everybody waits with anticipation for the AP Top 25 to be unveiled; it has historically been viewed as the best indicator of what can be expected of teams during the season. However, is it the most accurate representation of college football's elite? It could be argued that the sportbooks are a better gauge of how a season will unfold. Just for grins, let's look at the AP Top 25 and see how it compares to the 25 teams BetUS has given the least favorable National Championship odds. The team's ranking for the futures odds poll is in parentheses.

College Football Futures Betting 101

Try to think back to what you were like in college. Try to recall the confusion, the uncertainty, the hormones, the narcotics, and the litany of questionable decisions in dicey situations. I'm certain at that period you had a hard enough time trying to predict what you were going to do from minute to minute. 2008 WAC Predictions

The Western Athletic Conference has produced the past two BCS-crashers in Hawaii and Boise State, making it the most high profile of the mid-major conferences. 2008 Big Ten Predictions

Here at Doc's Sports the Big Ten has been our bread and butter since the early 1970s. Our main office is located in Badgers Country in the proverbial heart of the Big Ten. Betting College Football Conference Winners - Odds and Analysis
by Robert Ferringo - 08/20/2008
If you are a college football futures bettor, or an aspiring futures bettor, there is one very important word to keep in mind: value. Trying to project out an entire season - which is essentially what you are trying to do by making a futures wager on conference champions - is a difficult task. So the main thing is to not try to bet the team that you think will win, but instead try to weigh the likelihood of a school taking a title vs. their actual payout.

Already a QB Controversy at Ohio State
by Trevor Whenham - 08/04/2008
Ohio State is in a pretty unique situation. They are coming off of two consecutive appearances in the BCS Championship Game. Whether they have deserved to be there is another issue--and their performance has been less than inspiring in the marquee showdowns--but the fact remains that they have done it. What makes it even more interesting is that they have done it with two different starting quarterbacks. Troy Smith won the Heisman en route to the top of the BCS in 2006, and Todd Boeckman replaced him in 2007.

College Football Betting Traps
by Trevor Whenham - 08/04/2008
This is a dangerous time for sports bettors who love football. NFL training camps are underway, and college football preparations are just around the corner. There's nothing of note to bet on yet, but we're so hungry for football that we read every article, watch every report and listen to every opinion that's out there. For the most part that's a good thing - the preparation gets us ready to make good decisions and avoid bad ones. There's a downside, though. The media has a bad habit of locking onto things that just aren't that important and not letting them go.

Small Conference Teams That Could Be Big Moneymakers
by Trevor Whenham - 07/30/2008
Every year in college football some of the biggest money to be made comes from spotting low profile teams from minor conferences that are going to quietly and consistently cover spreads. Troy, Temple, Bowling Green, Ball State, San Jose State and Central Florida were all among the top 25 best teams ATS last season, all were at least 7-4 ATS, and yet most bettors couldn't name more than three players from the six teams combined. Everyone has their opinion on the high-profile teams - Florida, Georgia, Ohio State, USC and the like - but the value is usually thoroughly bet out of them.

MAC ATS Trends for College Football
by Nicholas Tolomeo - 07/24/2008
For years recreational bettors have stuck mainly to the BCS conferences and marquee matchups when placing a wager at the ticket window. The mid-majors and smaller conferences were areas where only the professional bettors chose to dabble, since the lines are generally not considered strong due to low handle and lack of widespread handicapping information. However, more casual bettors are paying attention to these smaller conferences and schools, mainly because they have become a mid-week fixture on national cable TV broadcasts. The squares, bless their hearts, will bet any game being shown on the boob tube.

Major College Programs To Be Hampered By Tough Schedules
by Trevor Whenham - 07/22/2008
There's a trap I seem to fall into every college football season. I get excited about a team based on their roster, their returning players, or their coaching staff, and I don't pay enough attention to the schedule a team is facing. A schedule, though, can make the difference between a good season and a lousy one. An easy schedule can make an average team look really good, and that can be costly as the season rolls on into bowl time. A tough schedule can make a team look like it has real problems, when really it just can't catch a break.

Can Any Pac-10 Clubs Unseat USC?
by Trevor Whenham - 07/17/2008
Do you know what I am really sick of? USC constantly winning the Pac-10. The Trojans have been division champs six years in a row. I don't really have a problem with Pete Carroll and his boys, and I am certainly not one of their haters. I just really can't stand it when a team is able to reign virtually unchallenged for so long. Of course, some teams have risen up and given the team a scare from time to time, and they have shared the division lead three times, but there hasn't been a team that has been a consistent, legitimate threat. That needs to end. But it probably won't. Here's a quick look at possible Pac-10 contenders to see if any team can rise up.

College Futures: Season Win Totals
by Trevor Whenham - 07/15/2008
College football is just around the corner, so it is a good time to look at college football season win totals. Looking at the totals this far after they have been released is mostly a frustrating situation - there isn't much value at all in the ones that seem to be the most straightforward or obvious. The only thing that makes sense to me in these situations is to look at teams that have an obvious public opinion one way that I don't necessarily share. That way you can find a nice big price that could be worth a shot, and I'd rather take a shot at a big price than a small one if my money is going to be tied up all season. Here are four that stand out as potentially worth a shot:

Major College Football Programs With QB Concerns
by Trevor Whenham - 07/09/2008
This is a scary time of year for fans and backers of several college football teams. The season is just around the corner, and some teams have way more questions than answers when it comes to their quarterback. Starting a freshman quarterback, or an older guy who is totally inexperienced, is frightening. It can turn out way better than you could ever dream, as it did for Oklahoma with Sam Bradford. Underrated College Football Teams

As we are waiting for the season to get started, now is a good time to look at teams that may not be getting the respect that they deserve. To do that, I took a look at the prices assigned to teams regarding their chances of winning the national championship.
