Will a team like the Trail Blazers take the Western Conference by storm? Will the Suns maintain their dominance or will father time finally catch up? Find out all the off-season moves and my thoughts on each team's posted win totals. This article will cover the Eastern Conference season win totals and look out for the Western Conference predictions tomorrow.
Eastern Conference
Atlantic Division
Boston Celtics - Last Year's Record 66-16
(Sportsbook.com 2008-09 O/U 53.5 WINS)
A 42-win turnaround looks like a misprint, but that's just what the Celtics did with their additions of Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen to create the "Big Three". A spectacular season ended with an NBA Championship and Kevin Garnett screaming to anyone that would listen that "anything is possible". This year they lose James Posey and need to maintain the fire that a lot of players lose once they get a ring. Kevin Garnett won't let this team lose focus and they will be a threat to the 60-win mark again.
Prediction: OVER
Toronto Raptors - Last Yrs Record 41-41
(Sportsbook.com 2008-09 O/U 47.5 WINS)
Maybe no team in the NBA has been less heralded in making the playoffs both of the last two seasons then the Toronto Raptors. Granted, they went out in the first round each time but a talented roster headlined by Chris Bosh has the books predicting a nice win output for this team. The addition of Jermaine O'Neal could be a big one but we will have to wait and see if he is back after missing a lot of time over the last few seasons with injuries. Jose Calderon will be the full time point guard after producing a wonderful statistical season including an eye popping 5.5 assist-to-turnover ratio. They will be in the playoffs but could fall a couple games short of the projected win total.
Prediction: UNDER
Philadelphia 76ers - Last Yrs Record 40-42
(Sportsbook.com 2008-09 O/U 48.5 WINS)
Adding an MVP-caliber power forward in Elton Brand to a team that was already considered to be a sleeper in the east has opened the eyes of many to the potential that this team could have. Andre Miller and Andre Iguodala have already established themselves as top-of-the-line starters and Thaddeus Young and Lou Williams look like the real deal. This team is dangerous and has many different ways it can beat you. A run to the Eastern Conference Finals should not be a shock.
Prediction: OVER
New Jersey Nets-Last Yrs Record 34-48
(Sportsbook.com 2008-09 O/U 27.5 WINS)
The Nets are clearly in rebuilding mode after trading Jason Kidd and Richard Jefferson. They do still have Vince Carter and now have an intriguing group of youngsters. They potentially have a franchise PG in Devin Harris and rookies Chris Douglas-Roberts, Ryan Anderson, and Brook Lopez all have a chance to develop into nice NBA players. The problem is that there are sure to be growing pains as much of them are together for the first time and Vince Carter's attitude in a losing atmosphere will be sure to be a problem at some point.
Prediction: UNDER
New York Knicks-Last Yrs Record 23-59
(Sportsbook.com 2008-09 O/U 31.5 WINS)
Mike D'Antoni surprised many when he took the Knicks job instead of heading what people assumed was a Bulls team with a roster much more suited for his style of offense. It has been evident, though, early on that D'Antoni's style will have a positive affect on many of the Knicks players. Jamal Crawford, David Lee and Nate Robinson all seem very positive this preseason and it has showed as the Knicks played well. It's hard to say the Knicks are going to change their stripes overnight but they can't be perceived as a sure "W" by opponents like they have in the last few years.
Prediction: OVER
Central Division
Detroit Pistons-Last Yrs Record 59-23
(Sportsbook.com 2008-09 O/U 50.5 WINS)
On the surface it looks like the Pistons are getting old quickly but they have a young and talented group to give the veterans some rest. At power forward veteran Antonio McDyess will come off the bench and be replaced by Amir Johnson, who averaged over five blocks per 48 minutes. Rodney Stuckey will be their sixth man as he looks to build on a rookie season April that saw him average 14 ppg and four assists. Overall the Pistons are a very talented team that should be capable of reaching their predicted win total even with giving some of their all-stars some rest during the regular season.
Prediction: OVER
Cleveland Cavaliers-Last Yrs Record 45-37
(Sportsbook.com 2008-09 O/U 48.5 WINS)
LeBron James could finally have his sidekick this year with the off-season acquisition of PG Mo Williams. Yes, he will by far be the best PG James will have had in his career so far but we still need to see the two co-exist and Mo needs to understand that this is Lebron's team not his. Although it seems like Zydrunas Ilgauskas has been on the Cavaliers since the inception of the franchise he is still going strong and is one of the better centers in the Eastern Conference. Expect a very consistent Cavaliers team that finishes towards the upper echelon in the East and has at least 50 wins.
Prediction: OVER
Indiana Pacers-Last Yrs Record 36-46
(Sportsbook.com 2008-09 O/U 34.5 WINS)
Larry Bird has spent the offseason trading Jermaine O'Neal and stating if Jamaal Tinsley isn't traded he will not play another game for the Pacers. In a clear rebuilding effort Jim O'Brien has some talented pieces. After a breakout year for Mike Dunleavy and Danny Granger they will probably benefit with a more consistent T.J. Ford at PG. They have the ability to shoot from the perimeter but don't have any post up threat. Expect the Pacers to cause a headache for a few playoff teams as they barely miss out on the playoffs.
Prediction: OVER
Chicago Bulls-Last Yrs Record 33-49
(Sportsbook.com 2008-09 O/U 40.5 WINS)
The Bulls hit the lottery literally and figuratively this offseason when they landed the first overall choice of the draft with only a 1.7 percent chance. They went ahead and selected Chicago native Derrick Rose who will at least give the United Center fans something to look forward to during what could be a long season. Vinny Del Negro will now lead a young Bulls core after last year's firing of Scott Skiles and interim coach Jim Boylan. A mostly jump shooting team, the Bulls shot an NBA worst 43.5 percent from the field. With no true interior scoring threat, a first year head coach, and a rotation in disarray the Bulls record will look much like last season's.
Prediction: UNDER
Milwaukee Bucks-Last Yrs Record 26-56
(Sportsbook.com 2008-09 O/U 30.5 WINS)
A new coach, Scott Skiles, and a big addition in Richard Jefferson give the Bucks some much-needed veteran experience. Still, their roster is filled with lethargic defenders and their best returning player is very one-dimensional (yes we're talking to you Michael Redd). They should improve and get to that win total but don't expect to see them in the playoffs this season.
Prediction: OVER
Southeast Division
Orlando Magic-Last Yrs Record 52-30
(Sportsbook.com 2008-09 O/U 47.5 WINS)
The Magic improved by 12 games in Stan Van Gundy's first season leading the team and became an offensive juggernaut, leading the Eastern Conference with 104.5 PPG. Another year to develop Dwight Howard saw him take giant leaps towards becoming one of the most dominant forces in the paint of this era. The deadly outside combo of Hedo Turkoglu and Rashard Lewis helped the Magic nail the most three pointers per game in the NBA. This team is still on the rise and a legitimate championship contender.
Prediction: OVER
Washington Wizards-Last Yrs Record 43-39
(Sportsbook.com 2008-09 O/U 37.5 WINS)
The Wizards will begin this season without their leading scorer, Gilbert Arenas, for three months as he recovers from left knee surgery and they will be without shot blocking center Brendan Haywood for six months. Last season they still managed to win without Arenas as Caron Butler and Antawn Jamison carried the load finishing with the fifth seed in the Eastern Conference playoffs. With the conference being much deeper this season and the Wizards not making any big off-season additions via free agency, it looks like the Wizards will struggle to be .500.
Prediction: UNDER
Atlanta Hawks- Last Yrs Record 37-45
(Sportsbook.com 2008-09 O/U 36.5 WINS)
Last season ended by forcing the world champion Boston Celtics to a seventh game in the opening round of the playoffs. The franchise decided to bring back head coach Mike Woodson and re-sign the ultra-athletic Josh Smith to a five-year, $58 million deal. They did, however, lose key sixth man Josh Childress to Greek team Olympiakos. A full season with Mike Bibby at the point, and an increased role for Al Horford have the Hawks looking for their first back-to-back playoff appearances since the 98-99 season.
Prediction: OVER
Charlotte Bobcats-Last Yrs Record 32-50
(Sportsbook.com 2008-09 O/U 38.5 WINS)
On paper, the Bobcats roster doesn't look so bad but it has yet to produce results on the court. In the off-season Michael Jordan brought in Larry Brown to try and bring some much needed guidance and organization to a team that lacks an identity. Jason Richardson, who led the NBA with 243 threes last season, will look to drive to the basket more as teams step out on his jump shot. Larry Brown will get some improvement on the defensive side of the ball but without a true go-to guy down the stretch and a lack of depth in the front court the Bobcats will be fortunate to see anything more than a few games up tick in the win column.
Prediction: UNDER
Miami Heat-Last Yrs Record 15-67
(Sportsbook.com 2008-09 O/U 37.5 WINS)
What can go wrong will go wrong was the motto for the Miami Heat in 07-08. It resulted in them attaining the second pick of the draft where they selected Michael Beasley. After Dwyane Wade's spectacular play in the 2008 Olympic Games many have the Heat bouncing back to a return to a playoff spot this year. It shouldn't be a given though because there is a great chance that Shawn Marion will be traded before the deadline and sharpshooter James Jones is out for three months with a torn tendon in his wrist. If Wade can have another season in which he can shoulder the load they could be looking at the playoffs. If not, they will be on the outside looking in.
