2008 Belmont Stakes Results
by Doc's Sports
The race turned out to be a dud for the Big Brown camp, as the horse did not have it and his jockey, Kent Desormeaux pulled him up before the final straight away. Da' Tara was the horse that benefited the most and ran away with this race winning from gate to wire.

2008 Belmont Stakes Analysis
by Trevor Whenham - 06/04/2008
The field for the Belmont Stakes is set. A couple of no-hopers have joined the field hoping for a small share of the purse, so there will be 10 horses vying for the big prize. Shock of shocks, Big Brown is the morning line favorite at 2/5. That price is going to look pretty good compared to where he will be at post time. Here's some quick Belmont Stakes analysis now that the Belmont field as it is set:

2008 Belmont Stakes Jockeys
by Trevor Whenham - 06/04/2008
Jockeys are perhaps the most crucial part of any horse race. A good jockey can make a decent horse look like a star, and a jockey mistake can turn a likely win into a finish off the board. Jockeys face two of the biggest challenges of the year in the Triple Crown. In the Derby they have to face the chaos of the massive crowds and try to find a way to keep their horse safe and happy until the stretch drive. The Belmont isn't nearly as crowded, but it's probably even more difficult. The race is so long and the stretch is endless, so a jockey has to time his charge just perfectly or else the horse will use up his limited reserves before the finish line.

Derby Horses in the Belmont
by Trevor Whenham - 06/03/2008
It may seem like the Belmont Stakes is just a one horse race, but Big Brown will actually have to beat a few horses before he can claim his historic Triple Crown. Those horses come from different places and backgrounds, but three of them share one striking similarity - Anak Nakal, Denis of Cork and Tale of Ekati, like Big Brown, all ran in the Kentucky Derby. This is by no means rare for Belmont entrants, but it's significant. It means that these horses were all at their physical peaks just five weeks ago, and they have all been seasoned in the biggest, loudest and craziest race in the world. By looking at how recent Derby entrants have fared in the Belmont we may be able to get an insight into what to expect from our four dual-runners this year.

Belmont Distance Gets Tougher and Tougher on Horses
by Greg Melikov - 06/03/2008
The Belmont Stakes has been staged at three different distances from 1 ¼ to 1 5/8 miles since 1867, when the filly Ruthless won the inaugural by a head.

Handicapping the Belmont Stakes
by Trevor Whenham - 06/02/2008
Handicapping the Belmont Stakes this year comes down to one deceptively difficult question - do you believe in Big Brown? The Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner is going to be a very heavy favorite in the Belmont. He's been favored in the first two legs of the Triple Crown, and he has won both races with stunning ease. That combined with the public excitement over the potential for a Triple Crown ensures that the favorite will go off at odds far below even money. With odds that low there isn't much room for a mistake.

Belmont Stakes Handicapping Method
by Trevor Whenham - 06/02/2008
Every horse race is unique, and to successfully handicap it you need to study the intricacies of that particular race. That being said, there are certain rules and trends that you can follow to get a good general idea of how a race might turn out. The Belmont Stakes is a good example of a race where a defined method might be useful. The race is always run at the same time of year over the same distance on the same track and racing surface. Horses are new to the distance, and this race will be the biggest challenge of their careers.

Belmont Stakes Facts
by Trevor Whenham - 06/02/2008
Depending on your perspective, the wait for the Belmont Stakes this year is either three weeks or 30 years long. It will be three weeks between the Preakness and the Belmont, but it has been 30 years since there has been a Triple Crown winner and Big Brown represents as good a chance of an end to that streak as we have seen in a long time. Serious horse racing fans are counting the seconds until their date with destiny, but more casual followers of horse racing are likely just tuning into the sport and trying to get up to speed with what is going on and what everyone is talking about. For those people, here is a list of frequently asked questions that we have been asked. These Belmont Stakes facts will get you up to speed.

Potential Belmont Longshots
by Trevor Whenham - 05/28/2008
People who are passionate and romantic fans of horse racing probably view the word Birdstone as the most vulgar of swear words. I sure do. Birdstone was the 36/1 longshot who won the 2004 Belmont Stakes. The win might have been a feel good story if it weren't for the fact that Birdstone beat the overwhelming favorite, Smarty Jones. Smarty Jones had the lead in the stretch, but Birdstone chased him down in the final furlong for a narrow win. Smarty Jones was wildly popular both in the racing world and among the general public. Like Big Brown, he had been dominant in winning the first two legs of the Triple Crown, and his win in the Belmont seemed assured.

Casino Drive Presents Belmont Handicapping Challenges
by Trevor Whenham - 05/21/2008
Casino Drive is a big story heading into the Belmont Stakes, and he would be an even bigger story if Big Brown weren't such a freak. Casino Drive is also perhaps the biggest enigma and handicapping challenge to ever hit the Triple Crown trail.

Ten Reasons Big Brown Will Win Triple Crown
by Trevor Whenham - 05/20/2008
In the 30 years since we last saw a Triple Crown winner we have repeatedly been reminded just how hard it is to win the Kentucky Derby, Preakness and Belmont in the same year. That's why I'm trying as hard as I can to limit my excitement and anticipation over what Big Brown could achieve. He seems like he has what it takes to win it all, but then so did Funny Cide, Smarty Jones, Real Quiet, Silver Charm, Sunday Silence, Alysheba and Spectacular Bid, and none of them managed to get it done. That being said, there are at least 10 good reasons why this could finally be the year that our Triple Crown slump comes to an end:

Early Belmont Contenders
by Trevor Whenham - 05/20/2008
Though he won the Kentucky Derby easily, Big Brown didn't scare horses off in the Preakness. There were 13 entries for that race - one short of the maximum allowed. He was so dominant against that field that it seems hard to believe that he will be beat in the Belmont, but again a surprising number of horses are lining up to try. There are six horses besides Big brown currently aimed for the Belmont, and a few others that remain possible.

Belmont the Thorn In Side Of Past Triple Crown Contenders
by Trevor Whenham - 05/20/2008
As a huge horse racing fan I am simultaneously incredibly excited and full of dread when it comes to the next three weeks. I'm excited because I was too young to appreciate the only two Triple Crown wins I was alive for, and there is nothing in sports I want to see more. The dread comes because we have been this close so many times before only to come up short. My heart has been ripped out each time, and it will be again if Big Brown doesn't pull it off here. Since Affirmed last won the Triple Crown in 1978 Big Brown is the 11th horse to go into the Belmont with a shot at eternal glory. Though none have pulled it off, many have come agonizingly close.
