Ferringo Examines Early Line Moves
by Robert Ferringo - 11/27/2007
In the nine weeks that we've been tracking the most significant early line movements as an indicator of weekend college football success there have only been two weekends where playing on the games with the sharpest early action would have turned a profit. Last weekend was not one of them, so clearly you should continue to fade and fade hard. On the season, the early week steam moves are just 19-27 on the season for a bankroll busting 41.3-percent clip.

Doc's Friday Public Action Report
by Trevor Whenham - 11/23/2007
Last week's Public Action Report wasn't as successful from top to bottom as many we have seen, but it did have its highlights. Most notably, the line movement in the Texas Tech upset over Oklahoma was big enough to give us a hint of what may have been up. Of course, the sportsbooks couldn't have known that Oklahoma QB Sam Bradford would go down early with an injury, but if you watched that game you'd know that Bradford may not have been enough to overcome the dominance of Texas Tech on that night.

College and NFL Trap Game Report
by Trevor Whenham - 11/21/2007
There aren't many games in the college ranks that can even be considered as trap games because so may teams are finishing their seasons this week. Maybe that's a good thing considering the rough weekend we had last week with this report. There is one college game that qualifies, though, and three NFL games that are very interesting and worthy of further discussion:

Ferringo Examines Early Line Moves
by Robert Ferringo - 11/20/2007
Last week's 0-4 showing has simply reaffirmed what we've learned this season: early week steam moves are no indicator of actual against the spread performance. We've been tracking the games with the strongest early line movements all season and over the past seven weeks alone following the "sharp" early action would have net a subpar 17-24 ATS mark. It was certainly worth tracking, but in the end we proved that, at least for one season, there's no reason to get scared off a play simply because the line moves heavily against you early in the week.

Doc's Friday Public Action Report
by Trevor Whenham - 11/16/2007
Though the game occurred too early to show up in this report, Oregon's heartbreaking loss on Thursday night is a perfect example of the power of the public action. Oregon opened as heavy 13-point favorites against an underwhelming Arizona team. Three out of every four bets went on the Ducks. Yet, for some reason, the line dropped like a rock. By game time it could be found at 10 points. The line moved very strongly against the public action. Paying attention to that would have given you a winning bet on Arizona, or at the very least led you to pass on the game and avoid an Oregon disaster.

College and NFL Trap Game Report
by Trevor Whenham - 11/15/2007
It was a very good week for the Trap Game Report last week. In fact, it couldn't have been better. All four underdogs in the games we identified covered, and three - Illinois, Maryland, and the Atlanta Falcons - won outright. There are four more games to look at this week and, with a bit of luck, maybe we can do as well again.

Fourth Down and Inches
by Doc - 11/14/2007
Not too much to say about last week, losing six games in college football for our worst performance of the season on Saturday. Our only defense is that we lost three starting quarterbacks in three of our selections. The three quarterbacks that went down were ASU's Carpenter, FSU's Weatherford, and Michigan's Henne.

Ferringo Examines Early Line Moves
by Robert Ferringo - 11/13/2007
Since the first weekend in October the early sharp action in college football has been about as dull as an episode of "The Sarah Silverman Show". And that's pretty dull. The strongest early line movements away from the numbers released by the LVSC have posted a paltry 17-20 mark against the spread during that time. Well, after a week off we're back to see if the Monday movements are A) set for a strong finish, B) consistently worth playing against, or C) about as useful of an indicator as that quarter in your pocket.

Doc's Friday Public Action Report
by Trevor Whenham - 11/09/2007
With a huge number of games identified in the Public Action Report, there were some notable successes. Most interesting was the discovery that the books had much less faith in Nebraska than the public did. Though public money was firmly on the side of Nebraska, the line moved away from them more than any other line on the report did, and the result was a humiliating butt-kicking at the hands of Kansas.

College and NFL Trap Game Report
by Trevor Whenham - 11/08/2007
We had a solid week last time around spotting trap games, with three covers in five games, including Minnesota's impressive outright win over the Chargers. This week we have four games identified in which the favorites may be looking beyond who they play this week towards a more important opponent next week. As always, the goal here isn't to point out games to bet blindly on, but rather to identify places where you might want to take another look if you are leaning towards the favorite.

Doc's Friday Public Action Report
by Trevor Whenham - 11/02/2007
It was another good week for the Public Action Report last week. Two out of the three teams we picked covered the spread. Interestingly, both teams were outright winners despite being 5.5- and nine-point underdogs. This philosophy has been working well in recent weeks, which is notable given how topsy-turvy the rest of college football has been. There look to be four games - two in college and two in the NFL - which grab my attention this week.

College and NFL Trap Game Report
by Trevor Whenham - 11/01/2007
After a one-week hiatus we are back with the Trap Game Report. This week there are five games that we will look at - four in college and one in the NFL - in which an obviously superior team could look past their lesser opponent to someone more ominous down the road. All of the games have large spreads, and an argument can be made in each case that the better team may not cover if they let their foot off the gas. As any sports bettor knows well, crazy things can happen when the better team doesn't care about a game and the underdog has nothing to lose.

Ferringo Examines Early Line Moves
by Robert Ferringo - 10/30/2007
It's time once again for that weekly waltz that occurs between our friends over at the Las Vegas Sports Consultants and the sharp gamblers that pry apart the early college football spreads. Essentially, the LVSC recommends the lines to their clients, the sportsbooks, each week and the books respond by posting a suitable opening number. The sharps then come along like ravenous wolves encircling a wounded animal, ready to pounce on any number that they feel displays weakness or vulnerability. The result is an early week steam move on those seemingly weak lines, and that helps set the number that a majority of bettors in the general public will then have to wager on.

Fourth Down and Inches
by Doc - 10/30/2007
Our Big Ten Game of the Year was a major disappointment, to say the least. What disappointed me the most was the play of the Penn State defense. This unit on paper looked to make it very difficult for the Buckeye's offense, but that did not develop and I thought QB Todd Boeckman played outstanding. He moved the chains and made big plays with his arm and there was no question about it, the Buckeyes deserved to win this game.

Doc's Friday Public Action Report
by Trevor Whenham - 10/19/2007
As is quickly becoming a trend this year, we had another solid week last week by looking at what the public was doing, spotting the places where the books weren't reacting as expected to the public, and acting on it. In college, we spotted that Alabama was vulnerable, and we found outright NFL winners with both Tampa Bay and Minnesota. It's not always easy to explain why the lines are making unexpected moves, but the fact that they are makes it worthy of attention. The mere fact that they are moving as they are, though, means that something is going on and we need to look at it.

College and NFL Trap Game Report
by Trevor Whenham - 10/18/2007
Looking for trap games - games which teams might not be completely focused on because they are looking ahead to next week - is an important element of effective handicapping. It doesn't always mean that a team playing in a trap game will fail to cover or lose outright. Last week none of them did. I do believe, though, that you need to look at games that could be trap games and consider whether that's the defining factor in the game, or whether the favorite can overcome the trap factor and cover. If you are aware of trap games you can deal with them accordingly, but if you aren't paying attention to them then they can sneak up and steal your money.

Fourth Down and Inches
by Doc - 10/17/2007
Our selection service turned in another nice week as we went 8-2 overall, picking up +22 units. Of the two losses, we did get crunched with Central Florida, as the Knights appeared to be over their heads against South Florida. The other loss came with Oklahoma, our Big 12 Game of the Year. That loss was brutal and should not have occurred. The Sooner's missed four extra points and gave up a meaningless touchdown with 16 seconds left. This was a big game for the books, as the line moved to 13 points just before kickoff with all the late money coming in on the home favorite.

Doc's Friday Public Action Report
by Trevor Whenham - 10/12/2007
It was another good week for the Public Action Report last week, which means that it was another bad week for the public. We were able to identify the Chicago Bears and North Carolina Tarheels, two teams that deserved much more attention than they were getting, and Buffalo finally cam through for us in the college ranks after failing to do so two weeks in a row. That was three of five games correct. Now if only we could come up with a way that would have told us to bet Stanford on the money line.

College and NFL Trap Game Report
by Trevor Whenham - 10/11/2007
There may be nothing more frustrating than the trap game. By simple definition, a trap game is one where a team is looking past their current opponent towards the one they will be playing the next week. In those cases, the team may not be as prepared or as focused as they should be, and they may not cover like they should. It's frustrating as a handicapper to come to a conclusion that a team is a legitimate bet, and then to have them fail to cover not because of what the other team did, but what they failed to do. It only makes sense, then, that it's good for the bottom line if we can identify trap games and avoid them (or at least consider how we are going to deal with them).

Our College Game of the Year went into the books as expected when Illinois cashed as a slight favorite over Wisconsin. What was most gratifying about our choice was that the oddsmakers made the Badgers the underdog despite being ranked No. 5 in the country. Throughout the land, bettors were screaming "how can this be?" A team that is ranked fifth an underdog to an unranked opponent? I certainly respect the oddsmakers desire to make Illinois the favorite, as it only made my opinion stronger because the line was not adjusted enough.

Doc's Friday Public Action Report
by Trevor Whenham - 10/05/2007
The Public Action Report was again useful last week. It pointed us towards two dogs that were outright winners - Illinois in college football and the Falcons in the NFL. It also showed us that Hawaii wasn't a lock to run away against Idaho. As with almost any single factor approach to handicapping, this method of picking games is not likely to be profitable by itself, but it does do a very good job of pointing out games that are worthy of further study, and particularly of finding underdog winners in close games. This week there are five games again - three in college and two in the NFL:

What a week it was in college football, as five of the top teams in the land lost straight-up. This was a bookmaker's dream in both college and pro football, as the underdog prevailed in most games. It always amazes me just how the rankings our done in college football. As most of you know, there are two polls, one by the coaches and one by the Associated Press of sports writers. Ferringo Examines Early Line Moves
by Robert Ferringo - 09/25/2007
Being able to properly read and assess the opening line in college and professional football seems like one of the most basic and simple components of football betting. However, analyzing the opening line and initial movements off of it is a skill that takes years to master. In fact, even handicappers that have been in the game for decades still have difficulty explaining why a certain line may move a certain way during the week - and even more trouble still deciphering what that movement portends.

It is certainly hard to believe, but we are now entering our fourth week of college football. Several powerhouses are emerging across the nation and there are some teams that look like they have already given up. As I watched football this past Saturday, two of the college teams that impressed me were Southern Cal and Ohio State. As much as I hate to admit it, I was on the other sides of games involving both of these teams last week and lost them both.

After Week 2's frustrating end I have to say that I'm still steaming a bit. I'm especially angry with myself for some flat out ignorant plays (New Orleans), for not trusting my initial impression on what was going to be my top play (Green Bay) and for having the brains to stay away from the heavy favorites because they've covered about 35 percent of the time over the past decade but not having the stones to go the other way and take the points. Ugh.

The potential of fading the public action in circumstances where the action doesn't necessarily make sense showed its' potential last week when we picked out underdog covers by Wake Forest and Colorado Sate despite overwhelming support for their opponents. It also showed us in the cases of West Virginia, Florida and the Seahawks that the lines were much tighter than the public expected them to be. It was a solid start to our public-watching efforts. There are five games this week, three in college and two in the pros, which stand out because of the way that the public is betting them and the line is reacting.

Ferringo Examines Early Line Moves
by Robert Ferringo - 09/12/2007
Being able to properly read and assess the opening line in college and professional football seems like one of the most basic and simple components of football betting. However, analyzing the opening line and initial movements off of it is a skill that takes years to master. In fact, even handicappers that have been in the game for decades still have difficulty explaining why a certain line may move a certain way during the week - and even more trouble still deciphering what that movement portends.

Doc's Friday Public Action Report
by Trevor Whenham - 09/07/2007
When it comes to handicapping sports in general, and football in particular, there is one thing you can take to the bank - the public just isn't very good at it. With a week between games, the general public has a long time to hear the hype and act on it. With the benefit of hindsight, it's amazing how often you see a team that had an overwhelming amount of public support fail to cover, or even lose. There are a lot of reasons for this, but they all boil down to overreacting to a situation - a streak, an injury, a benching, a nasty schedule.

The Advisory Board's Weekly Prescription
by Doc's Sports Services - 08/21/2007
A splendid weekend for the veteran handicapper, as we collect with our MLB Game of the Year and a blowout victory with our NFLX Game of the Week. I must admit that last week's preseason games were much better to watch, as most of the starters played into the second quarter and the scoring increased because of that. The 'under' would have sent you to the poor house, as eight of the nine games on Saturday played over the total. Because of this, the oddsmakers have adjusted the totals for Week Three and you find a couple of 40+ point numbers in a few of the games.

MLS Betting Preview
by Trevor Whenham - 07/12/2007
Practically no one in the United States cares about soccer. We are about to enter the David Beckham Era, which is a very expensive gamble by the MLS and the owners of the L.A. Galaxy to raise the profile of their league and the size of their wallets. I strongly suspect that the end result will still be that no one will care about soccer, but at the very least the arrival of Becks and Posh Spice in Hollywood will get more mainstream media attention than all other MLS players have received combined since the league was formed.

Milwaukee Brewers Weekly Betting Report
by Robert Ferringo - 06/01/2007
Just a couple short weeks ago, both Lohan and the Brewers were living large and doing good things. Lohan was named No. 1 on the Maxim 100 (a reach, but who am I to say) and Milwaukee was sitting at 24-10, the toast of Major League Baseball. However, since then both have jumped the curb and found themselves in the midst of a sordid disaster that has exploited a lot of weaknesses in each of them.

There's a natural letdown that occurs from all the hair-raising, blood-boiling, shock-inducing, gleeful dancing, and general mayhem that occurs through a weekend's worth of gambling action. And it's a scientific fact that Monday's are the most difficult day of the week for sports and gaming fans across the world, with Monday Sports Syndrome linked to illness and famine across the globe. OK, so I made that last part up. But it the start of a new week can be a cold splash of water to the face for Men of Action like you and I.

Milwaukee Brewers Weekly Betting Report
by Robert Ferringo - 05/10/2007
The Brewers currently boast the best record in Major League Baseball, are in the midst of a six-game winning streak, and have victories in 15 of their past 18 outings. Milwaukee dominated its recent 10-game home stand, which began on April 30 with a 7-1 maiming of St. Louis and ended on Wednesday with a 3-1 conquest of Washington. The Brewers outscored opponents 52-19 during that stretch and didn't yield more than four runs in any one game.

As you may or may not know by now, the Brew Crew is one of my adopted teams for this Major League Baseball season. To get into character, I've started drinking Beast Ice every day at 11 a.m., making sure everything I eat will have a devastating effect on my cholesterol and blood pressure levels, trolling about town on the weekends looking for fat chicks, and pronouncing my "au" sounds as "o" sounds (caught - cot, taught - tot, etc.).
