Strike Point: MLB Weekend Preview
by Strike Point Sports - 06/01/2007
Weekend baseball encompasses some of the best match-ups of the week. We'll break down which series you should be focused on, as well as the pitching duels that will give the advantage to either side.
New York Yankees at Boston Red Sox
Miles back of the first place Sox, where does New York go from here? And it was a brilliant PR move not to have Clemens pitch against Boston. Had he gone in his first game against the talented Sox and lost, how bad would it make the Yankees look, not to mention the grief New York would continue to catch as they fall further back?
Probable Pitching Match-ups
Friday - Chien-Meng Wang vs. Tim Wakefield
Saturday - Mike Mussina vs. Curt Schilling
Sunday - Andy Pettitte vs. Josh Beckett
Detroit Tigers at Cleveland Indians
Last weekend in Motown, the Tribe came into the Tigers' stadium and swept Detroit. Now they look for some revenge, heading to the Jake and looking to close in on some ground from the first place Indians. These two will be in the hunt all year for the AL Central crown, however right now they can sleep a little bit easier knowing the second place team is likely to get that Wild Card spot.
Probable Pitching Match-ups
Friday - Mike Maroth vs. Fausto Carmona
Saturday - Chad Durbin vs. Cliff Lee
Sunday - Jeremy Bonderman vs. Jeremy Sowers
Arizona Diamondbacks at New York Mets
The hottest team in the National League collides with the NL's best. The young D-Backs are coming into their own, getting superb pitching from their big three of Brandon Webb, Randy Johnson and Livan Hernandez, all while their bats are remaining hot. The bullpen is also a strong point, as the end result of Brandon Lyon and Jose Valverde is something of a brick wall this year to climb over. All New York is doing, however, is winning. This will be a very entertaining series.
Probable Pitching Match-ups
Friday - Brandon Webb vs. John Maine
Saturday - Livan Hernandez vs. Jorge Sosa
Sunday - Dough Davis vs. Oliver Perez
