Strike Point: MLB Weekend Preview
by Strike Point Sports - 05/10/2007
Weekend baseball encompasses some of the best match-ups of the week. We'll break down which series you should be focused on, as well as the pitching duels that will give the advantage to either side.
Chicago Cubs at Philadelphia Phillies
Two weeks ago these two preseason contenders were left for dead after awful starts. Since then both have surged back to .500 and are looking for bigger and better things the rest of this month. The Cubbies have started to hit the ball like their payroll suggests they should, while Philly has gotten much better bullpen work, keeping themselves in games late.
Probable Pitching Match-ups
Friday - Rich Hill vs. John Lieber
Saturday - Angel Guzman vs. Cole Hamels
Sunday - Ted Lilly vs. Freddy Garcia
Milwaukee Brewers at New York Mets
The best two NL clubs square off in Queens this weekend, but it's the Brewers that come in as the majors' top team. The Brew Crew have been nearly untouchable when it comes to starting pitching, and their young lineup is doing work as well. Some may question if they can keep it up throughout the year, but their top three arms should have the answer this weekend against the Mets.
Probable Pitching Match-ups
Friday - Jeff Suppan vs. Jorge Sosa
Saturday - Ben Sheets vs. Mike Pelfrey
Sunday - Chris Capuano vs. Oliver Perez
Detroit Tigers at Minnesota Twins
Several weekends back these two met in Detroit, but now they get center stage in Minnesota, leading up to their Sunday Night game on ESPN. The Tigers have been lights out as of late, keeping up with the first place Indians. However, we've all learned you can never count out the Twins.
Probable Pitching Match-ups
Friday - Mike Maroth vs. Johan Santana
Saturday - Chad Durbin vs. Sidney Ponson
Sunday - Jeremy Bonderman vs. Boof Bonser
