Strike Point: MLB Weekend Preview
by Strike Point Sports - 04/26/2007
Weekend baseball encompasses some of the best match-ups of the week. We'll break down which series you should be focused on, as well as the pitching duels that will give the advantage to either side.
Boston Red Sox at New York Yankees
Round two of the AL East goes down this weekend, and the Yankees' starting pitching is still in a state of flux. And even worse is the bullpen, that not only can't hold leads, but they can't even manage to hold deficits. Arod will be on center stage again to surpass Albert Pujols' April home run record, so surely this will be another entertaining series. Dice-K also gets his second crack at the Bombers' vaunted offense.
Probable Pitching Match-ups
Friday - Daisuke Matsuzaka vs. Andy Pettitte
Saturday - Tim Wakefield vs. Kei Igawa
Sunday - Julian Tavares vs. Chan Wang
Los Angeles Angels at Chicago White Sox
Two of the better pitching staffs at the beginning of the season, the Angels have been banged up and the Sox have had their issues as well. And both, on top of that, have been extremely inconsistent scoring runs. Without Vladimir in the lineup Anaheim has proved they can't score, and Chicago seems to be missing a lot of their power with a struggling Thome and Konerko.
Probable Pitching Match-ups
Friday - Ervin Santana vs. John Garland
Saturday - Jared Weaver vs. Mark Buehrle
Sunday - Kelvim Escobar vs. Javier Vasquez
Minnesota Twins at Detroit Tigers
Two of the top teams in the AL square off, continuing to settle the debate as to joins Cleveland as the teams to beat in the Central. The Tigers have been near the top all throughout April, however Minnesota never seems to sway too far away from the leaderboard. The Tigers' offense has come full circle and looks good despite a struggling Garry Sheffield. Minnesota needs defending batting champ Joe Mauer to continue his impressive hitting for a shot at the division crown. The staff aces battle in the series finale on Sunday.
Probable Pitching Match-ups
Friday - Ramon Ortiz vs. Justin Verlander
Saturday - Carlos Silva vs. Mike Maroth
Sunday - Johan Santana vs. Jeremy Bonderman
