Strike Point: MLB Weekend Preview
by Strike Point Sports - 04/20/2007
Weekend baseball encompasses some of the best match-ups of the week. We'll break down which series you should be focused on, as well as the pitching duels that will give the advantage to either side.
New York Yankees at Boston Red Sox
The rivalry of all rivalries, it's the first time these two meet up in '07. Both have been exceptional hitting teams, but the bullpens have been even better. The one thing that separates the Evil Empire and the Red Sox Nation is starting pitching. The Yankees are bruised and battered while Boston has its top three arms ready to go this weekend.
Probable Pitching Match-ups
Friday - Andy Pettitte vs. Curt Schilling
Saturday - Jeff Karstens vs. Josh Beckett
Sunday - Chase Wright vs. Daisuke Matsuzaka
Atlanta Braves at New York Mets
Both already have double digit wins and these two seem to be ready to clash throughout the summer for the NL East's top spot. With Philly down and the Marlins soon to be there, it's a two horse race. The Mets' offense is second to none in the NL, but it's the reemergence of Tim Hudson and John Smoltz that have this Braves team focused to reclaim their division once again.
Probable Pitching Match-ups
Friday - Tim Hudson vs. Mike Pelfrey
Saturday - Chuck James vs. Oliver Perez
Sunday - John Smoltz vs. Tom Glavine
Chicago White Sox at Detroit Tigers
Could one game, albeit a no-hitter, kickstart the upswing for the Southsiders? The White Sox have pitched brilliantly in the last two games and now they get the chance to match wits with one of the AL's best staffs. The Tigers have looked good in the defense of the AL pennant, and so far they are the division's most impressive through the first few weeks of the season.
Probable Pitching Match-ups
Friday - John Danks vs. Chad Durbin
Saturday - Jose Contreras vs. Nate Robertson
Sunday - John Garland vs. Justin Verlander
