U-Match Fantasy Betting Offers Value in the NFL
by Trevor Whenham - 12/21/2007
When I first saw the U-Match Fantasy bets being offered by betED I dismissed them as a gimmick to draw in more square money to their site. Something about them stuck in my mind, though. The more I think about them, the more I think that there could be situations where they make a lot of sense.

Will Vikings Continue To Be a Hot Bet?
by Trevor Whenham - 12/05/2007
Not long ago the Vikings were a team that had been written off by almost everyone, but that has all changed in the last month. Now they are media darlings and popular picks to make the playoffs. All it took to change their perceived fate was four wins in five games. In all of those wins they have scored at least 29 points, and they have won by 18 or more points three times. The only blip over that stretch was a 34-0 massacre at the hands of the upstart Packers. At 6-6 overall, and 6-4-2 ATS, they are a reasonably solid team in a year that hasn't had a lot of consistently inspiring play.

Possible Patriots Lines for Final Five Games
by Trevor Whenham - 11/28/2007
If 16-0 is the goal, then the Patriots came dangerously close to messing that up against Philadelphia on Sunday night. They didn't play badly, but they didn't look like the incredibly dominant team they have been for most of the year (with the exception of most of the game against Indianapolis, and a good portion of the one against Cleveland), and they made A.J. Feeley, a quarterback who hadn't started a game since 2004, look much better than he had any right to look.

Odds on the Patriots Undefeated Season: Any Value?
by Jason Shimberg - 11/01/2007
BetUS has released some props for winless and undefeated teams this season and many of them will hinge on this week's mega-matchup between New England and Indianapolis. The most intriguing of these bets has to do with the odds on the Patriots going undefeated.

Types of Football Bets
by Josh Nagel - 11/01/2007
There are a few things you should know before you head to the ticket window. The most important knowledge you can arm yourself with is familiarity with the various types of football bets and odds offered by sports books to satisfy the appetites of football bettors.

Gonzalez vs. Gates: Best TE in the League
by Max - 10/16/2007
With his two touchdown catches last week against the Cincinnati Bengals, Kansas City Chiefs TE Tony Gonzalez passed Shannon Sharpe for most career touchdown receptions by a tight end in NFL history. Sharpe still holds the record for most career receptions but do not be surprised if Gonzalez surpasses that as well before his career is over. The following will examine some of his career highlights, including his rise back to the top.

How To Handicap Quarterback Injuries
by Trevor Whenham - 10/12/2007
Injuries to quarterbacks in the NFL have become so commonplace that it is almost a bigger story if a starter isn't hurt than it is if he has to miss a game or more. Off the top of my head, Miami, Minnesota, the Jets, Baltimore, St. Louis, Carolina, Arizona, Buffalo, San Francisco, and Oakland have all had their starter miss time because of injuries, and we are only heading into Week 6. Those problems have led some teams to make some bizarre but necessary signings (Tim Rattay? Vinny Testaverde?!??).

How To Place a Sports Bet at the Ticket Window
by Josh Nagel - 10/09/2007
When considering how to place a sports bet at the ticket window in a casino, there is a basic etiquette to be followed. Just knowing a few of these tips will make things easier on you and the hardworking ticket writers. What's more, throw in a little common courtesy and you'll have good mojo on your side as a regular sports bettor.

Public Underdogs - A Rare Situation in NFL Betting
by Trevor Whenham - 10/02/2007
It's not very often that you see the public backing an underdog, especially one on the road. The public loves a favorite and they love a home team, so a home favorite is usually too much to resist. Every so often, though, the public will jump on an underdog. The fact that it happened twice in the NFL this weekend got me thinking. Oakland had a good portion of the support heading into Miami as 3.5-point underdogs (the support was strong enough that the line fell from a high of five). In the Tampa Bay game, 60 percent of the action was on the Bucs. The line moved from 2.5 to 3, though, perhaps showing that the pros were on the Panthers while the public was on Tampa Bay.

Football Tease: The Art Of Two-Team, Six-Point NFL Teasers
by Josh Nagel - 09/28/2007

Ranking the NFL Divisions ATS
by Trevor Whenham - 09/27/2007
We are three weeks into the NFL season. That means that there are a lot of things that we thought we knew that have been confirmed (New England is very, very good, for example), some things that we thought we knew that have been proven totally and utterly wrong (New Orleans will ride their potent offense to a Super Bowl berth), and a whole lot more that we haven't really been able to figure out yet (Green Bay, Denver, Oakland, Cleveland, Detroit - I could go on). As usual, the NFL has created a ton of betting chaos, and that's what makes the league so interesting.

NFL Total Trends Heading Into Week 3
by Trevor Whenham - 09/19/2007
Through Monday night, there had been 32 NFL games played. 18 of those games had stayed under the total, 13 went over, and one hit the number on the nose. Betting the under would, up to this point, be profitable. Of course, it's not as easy as that - or else we would all be rich. By delving deeper into the numbers we can see what there is to be learned to make us more successful total bettors. Here's the breakdown:

Betting NFL Pleasers: Tips and Strategy
by Trevor Whenham - 09/18/2007
Are you a particularly daring sports bettor? Are straight bets too boring? Do you find teasers and parlays too easy? If you do, then I want to know your secret. Whether you tell me or not, though, you might want to check out pleasers. Pleasers are quite likely the most challenging bet you can make on an NFL game. Winning them can be very lucrative, but only if you are correct, and that is far easier said than done.

Buffalo Bills - How Will the Defense Respond?
by Trevor Whenham - 09/14/2007
If you live in or near Buffalo, and you are even a little bit athletic, you might want to keep your Sunday afternoons clear for the next few weeks. The team is so lacking in depth, and so decimated by injuries already -- especially on the defense -- that they may soon be forced to hold open tryouts to fill the roster spots. It could be a long and ugly year in upstate New York. Of course, it was likely already headed that way before everything went screwy on Sunday afternoon.

2007 NFL Playoff Props: Fringe Teams
by Joe Paciella - 09/07/2007
The good people at BetUS were kind enough to post odds for each NFL team to make the playoffs this year. Anyone can bet on the Patriots to be playing after week 17, but at -1000 there's no value. The real question is whether the Panthers, Broncos, or other teams of that ilk, can make the postseason Here are some teams to look out for in this upcoming season.

NFL MVP Odds and Picks
by Trevor Whenham - 09/07/2007
This is the time of the NFL season when our pockets are full of money and we are optimistic that we know exactly how things are going to play out. There have not yet been any big surprises, disappointments, or upsets. We are the kings of the world. We might as well take advantage of our confidence and optimism to make as many bets as we can. As good a place as any to start is by betting on the NFL MVP. This award runs reasonably true to form - the best player from one of the best teams will take home the hardware.

Getting Rid of Leftwich Great Move for Jags
by Robert Ferringo - 09/05/2007
As long as I have been a Chicago Bears fan there are only two players that I ever remember praying for my favorite team to draft. The first was a tornado defensive end from my alma mater named Dwight Freeney. The second was a 6-foot-5 quarterback with a rocket launcher arm named Byron Leftwich.

How to Bet on NFL Football Games
by Jordan Adams - 09/05/2007
Just like with any other sport, there are several ways to approach wagering. The 'Bounce Factor' in Football Handicapping
by Gary Patrick Garry - 09/04/2007
I was watching a no-limit Texas Hold 'Em tournament last night and there was a lot of bluffing going on. It was amazing to see Scotty Nguyen raise a large bet with absolutely nothing because he knew the other guy was bluffing and had less than Scotty's nothing. Poker isn't just about luck and good cards, but it's also a people game. You have to know how to read people and capitalize on what you've learned about human nature.

2007 NFL Sleeper Picks
by Jordan Adams - 09/04/2007
With a fantastic opener slated for Thursday night between the Saints and Colts, as well as a full schedule on Sunday, the new season is upon us and all week we'll be geared up to scrape and dig for answers to find out who could be this year's New Orleans. Every year it seems there are several surprise teams that rise to the surface without anyone seeing them coming. And on the other side of the spectrum we'll witness the mess of one or two teams that bomb their season and fail to live up to any and all expectations (see 2006 Carolina Panthers). Here is a look at several 2007 NFL sleeper picks that could turn some heads this fall.

NFL Season Predictions: Top Ten List
by Christopher G. Shepard - 09/04/2007
NFL season predictions are like noses, everyone has one. While most prognosticators are concerned with 'totals', conference and division championships, player propositions, and who will win the Big Game, I am more concerned with what John Madden calls the "intangibles" that make an NFL Season.

Trap Lines: Caveat Emptor
by Christopher G. Shepard - 09/01/2007
Whether it is that three-point home 'dog to a nationally ranked team or an undefeated double digit road "chalk," the reality is that certain lines are established to seduce, entice, romance, entrap, and otherwise wreck havoc with your bankroll. One easy way to ensure the longevity of your bankroll is your ability to spot predatory "trap lines."

History of Professional Football
by Joe Paciella - 09/01/2007
On Jan. 4, 2005, USC pummeled Oklahoma in the BCS title game. Auburn won their bowl game over Virginia Tech to remain unbeaten, as did Utah. This left three teams with a goose egg in the loss column. How did we decide who won? Well, we left it up to a computer program, naturally. What's crazy isn't the fact that our national champion was crowned from an algorithm that came from some NASA astrophysics lab, but that Americans have seen this before...in professional football.

Finding Value in Bodog NFL Player Props

NFL Coaching Props
by Trevor Whenham - 08/31/2007
NFL head coaches are an interesting breed. They are ego-driven maniacs. As the cliche goes, they get too much credit when things go right, and too much blame when they don't. In many ways their jobs are thankless, but they get paid so much that I don't at all feel bad for them.

Doc's 2007 AFC North Preview
by Robert Ferringo - 08/28/2007

Doc's 2007 NFC East Preview
by Robert Ferringo - 08/28/2007
The NFC East is one of the few divisions in the NFL that actually boasts two preseason Super Bowl contenders. Granted, it's the NFC and anyone from Arizona to Atlanta has a shot of doing some damage in this featherweight conference. But with Dallas and Philadelphia loaded up on both sides of the ball I think that the winner of this division will find its way into the NFC Title game.

Doc's 2007 AFC West Preview
by Robert Ferringo - 08/25/2007
The AFC West is the NLL League in the NFL: No Love Lost. All divisional rivalry games in professional football are salty, bloody struggles. But they are particularly testy on the Left Coast. And this year will be no different. The Chargers are the clear-cut No. 1 team in this division and have goals beyond a second-straight AFC West title. However, after that there is a steep drop-off in overall talent and the fight for second place should be a cold-blooded one.

Doc's 2007 NFC South Preview

The NFC South might just be the most underrated division in football over the past six years. NFL Player Salaries for 2007
by Joe Paciella - 08/22/2007
Jay Berwanger never sat in the green room at the NFL Draft. Chosen first overall and signed by the Philadelphia Eagles in the inaugural draft of 1936, Berwanger's rights quickly became property of the Chicago Bears. He asked Coach George Halas for a contract of $25,000 over two years. When Halas declined, Berwanger went on to work as a foam-rubber salesman. Somehow I don't see JaMarcus Russell selling vacuum cleaners door-to-door anytime soon.

Doc's 2007 NFC West Preview
by Robert Ferringo - 08/21/2007
I'm going to be completely honest with you - I have absolutely no idea who is going to win the NFC West. No idea. I can speculate. But that just makes me one of the bobbleheads. Much like Creationism, I truly don't believe there's anyone that can speak intelligently on the subject. And much like the 2008 Democratic Nomination, I would laugh in the face of anyone who said that they could predict the outcome with any certainty.

Doc's 2007 AFC East Preview
by Robert Ferringo - 08/20/2007
If the AFC East were the Jackson 5 then the Jets, Bills, and Dolphins would be Tito, Jermaine and Marlon, respectively. That would leave the Pats as Michael and Marty Booker as Jackie. The Jets are desperately trying to be the Patriots, only with half the talent. The Bills are in the eighth stage of a 27-stage rebuilding project that began at halftime of Super Bowl XXVIII. And Miami? They're still looking for an ample replacement for Jay Fiedler. I don't see how any of the three bastard brothers can make a playoff run in the stacked AFC.

2007 NFC North Preview: Mutants, Weaklings and Bears - Oh My!
by Robert Ferringo - 08/16/2007
It basically breaks down like so: the NFC North teams are kind of like mutant babies born in Hiroshima in the years after The Bomb. They're deformed and missing limbs that most "normal" teams are not. Don't get me wrong; these organizations don't lack talent. But they each have PRONOUNCED vulnerabilities that make you wonder if their respective general managers had their ventromedial frontal lobes wilt and decay due to radiation.

49ers Deserve The Recent Hype
by Trevor Whenham - 08/11/2007
I enjoy being a bit of a contrarian sometimes, so it made me happy last year when I was very high on the 49ers and few people seemed to agree with me. They rewarded my faith by going a surprising (to others more than me) 7-9, and creating several high value and nicely profitable situations through the year. This year, despite the departure of offensive coordinator Norv Turner, I'm even more optimistic about their chances. Unfortunately, the public seems to have caught on to the progress and potential I saw as inevitable a year ago, and expectations have risen to such a point that the value may very well be bet out of the team, at least early in the season.

Handicapping the 2007 NFL Schedule
by Robert Ferringo - 08/08/2007
At the start of each season - before training camp, before preseason games, before fantasy drafts, and even before Sean Salisbury starts making completely obvious comments concerning the league and its teams (example: "Tom Brady just flat out gets it done." or "With Urlacher and that defense the Bears are tough to score against.") - I have a sort of betting ritual in regards to the National Football League schedule. While I do my preseason research, in which I backtrack through the injuries and free agent injections of each NFL team, I make a list of teams that I think will be overvalued and a list of teams that I think will be undervalued throughout the year.

Improving NFL Teams That Should Provide Value
by Trevor Whenham - 08/08/2007
When it comes to the records of NFL teams, I have a theory - a team can be decent and still only win six games because of injuries or other circumstances, but a team that wins five or fewer games either has real problems or just isn't very good. Last year there were six teams that fell under the six win barrier, and each, in there own way, was pretty bad. The Raiders were the true stinkers with just two wins. The Lions were not far behind at three. Cleveland and Tampa Bay notched four victories, and Arizona and Washington both had five.

Important NFL Trends to Fatten Your Wallet
by David Lane - 08/07/2007
When it comes to the NFL, winning bets can hinge greatly on a team's performance on such things as playing surface (grass or turf), stadium type (dome or open), and location of the game (home or away). There are statistics that track these different scenarios and they can show incredible trends regarding a particular team's success or failure. These facts can lead a bettor to some serious wins, even on big underdogs when they pick their spots correctly. Sorting through these stats for trends combined with an experienced eye for spotting a bargain is, as American Express says, "priceless".

No Locks in Sports Betting, Patriots Included
by Robert Ferringo - 08/02/2007
In my business, professional handicappers and sharp bettors know what the word "lock" means. Generally, it usually means that the exact opposite of a "sure winner" and it normally leaves an angry, stoned, confused mass in its wake. It's the Kiss of Death, and it's the nomenclature of touts and fools.

NFL Preseason Betting Tips
by Robert Ferringo - 08/01/2007
I always thought that betting on preseason football was strictly for degenerate gamblers. I mean real scumbags; the kind of guys you don't trust with your wife or your kids. The kind of guy who steals from his mother and doesn't comb the food out of his stained mustache. The ragged, the beaten and the depraved were the only ones with the will - only with these poor lost souls it was less will and more glorious obliviousness - to handle a wager that came down to a fourth-and-long with a third-string quarterback just days away from going back to his job as a tax assessor trying to toss a perfect fade to a fourth-string wide receiver destined to be driving a delivery truck the following week.

Bodog Team Rushing Props - Picks and Odds
by Trevor Whenham - 07/27/2007
One team is going to lead the league in total rushing yards. That's a certainty. If it's going to happen anyway, then we might as well bet on it. The trick, then, is figuring out which team it is going to be. The first thing we can say with quite a bit of confidence is that we are not going to have a defending champion. With Michael Vick gone at least for the start of the season, and quite likely for the whole year, the Falcons lose not only a 1,000-yard rusher, but also the difficult match-up that Vick was for defenses.

NFL Week 1 Lines and Predictions
by Trevor Whenham - 07/26/2007
Week 1 in the NFL is getting close, but it's still way too far away for my impatient mind. The season kicks off with the Saints visiting the Colts on Sept. 6 and then gives us a full card of games on Sunday and a doubleheader on Monday. The league and ESPN are showing that they are willing to take risks in the first week - the second Monday night game is the Cardinals in San Francisco. That has some potential to be decent, and I'm intrigued by it, but it could really be terrible, too, and it certainly isn't going to capture the imagination of the casual fan.

Tackling Bodog Passing Props for 2007 Season
by Trevor Whenham - 07/20/2007
People love gaudy passing stats. A 300-yard game always gets mentioned on a sports show, and a 400-yarder is often the lead on SportsCenter. Those yards don't always turn into wins, but they are usually pretty exciting. When it came to passing excitement last season, no one could hold a candle to the Saints. New Orleans had 4,626 yards in the air, which was 229 yards better than the Colts.

Four Major Questions (and Answers) This NFL Season
by Trevor Whenham - 07/07/2007
NFL training camps are just around the corner, so many players will be working very hard in the weight rooms and studying their playbooks so that they are ready to make the team. Sports bettors need to get into shape for the regular season, too. If you assume that we can just hit the ground running in Week 1 without doing any advance work and just start picking winners then you are in for a long and expensive season. Don't worry, though - you don't have to pump iron or run sprints. It's your mind that needs to be in shape, not your body.

Odds on NFL Criminals: Who is Ready for a Meltdown?
by Trevor Whenham - 06/27/2007
I used to hate the NFL offseason because after the draft there was no talk of the NFL in the media until training camps got underway. Now I hate the offseason because the draft is over and the NFL can't get itself out of the media. Unfortunately, it's not about player movement, new coaching schemes or something that would actually be interesting to read and hear about. It's all about which moron player got himself arrested for something stupid.

Wagering on the NFL
by Trevor Whenham
Betting on the NFL is practically a national obsession in the United States. Whether it is betting at a casino sports book or online, playing in a pool, betting with friends or even fantasy football, chances are pretty good that a lot of people you know will have some kind of action during the football season. In the playoffs it's virtually guaranteed that everyone will have a bet of some kind. If you don't spend any time wagering on the NFL then, well, you're missing out. You really should get started, and here are six things you should keep in mind to do just that:

Understanding Football Odds

Anybody who tells you that picking winners is football is easy is lying to you. NFL Europa Betting
by Trevor Whenham - 06/01/2007
How much do you know about NFL Europa? If you're like most people, probably not very much. I'll do a bit to change that here, but really there are only two things that matter - it's football and you can bet on it. What else do you need? It's a spring league, so if Arena Football doesn't do it for you then it can fill the football dead zone before college and the pros get going again reasonably well. And also, NFL Europa betting can be profitable because oddsmakers tend to set weak lines for the sport.

Ramifications of the 2007 NFL Schedule
by Robert Ferringo - 04/24/2007
Alright boys and girls, the 2007 National Football League schedule was released with much fanfare a few short weeks ago. I've reserved comment until now because I actually took some time to pour over the match-ups and meanings of this carefully crafted plan for the fall. I'm not here to tell you to mark your calendar for annual Regular Season Super Bowl between Indianapolis and New England like some simple hack. But instead I'm here to point out some teams that have more (or less) favorable situations than the public is giving them credit for.

Profit From Arena Football
by Vegas Sports Informer - 02/13/2007
I have had great success in the past handicapping the Arena Football League and I am expecting more big things this season. Last year alone I went 41-15-3 in betting Arena Football. I have had luck betting on home underdogs or sometimes betting totals in the mid 90s when the total should be in the low 100s.

2007 Pro Bowl Betting Strategy? Flip a Coin
by Trevor Whenham - 02/09/2007
The Pro Bowl, as a football game, is a total and complete waste of time. It's boring, it's poorly played and it is, frankly, a mystery why the game even exists at all. There are two things that make the Pro Bowl worthwhile, though. First of all, it helps us transition from the football season to the end of football season gradually.

Know the Odds Before Making a Blind Bet
by Allen Eastman - 01/31/2007
What are your chances of winning at your favorite gambling game? This depends on what kind of a gambler you are. The sucker has little chance of winning. The experienced gambler that does his homework and knows all angles of the business and the odds and has the best chance for profits.

Stu Scott, Robert Ferringo, and Chuck Norris Weigh In on Championship Weekend
by Robert Ferringo - 01/15/2007
When it comes to Big Game Gambling the first thing that any player with even an ounce of self-preservation should do is to find the Public Team and bet against them. Always. Under any circumstance. Over the long haul this will be the most profitable gambling system that you'll ever find. Just ask all those fortunate souls like myself who bet on Florida two weeks ago.

NFL Playoff Betting Systems
by Trevor Whenham - 01/12/2007
Do you ever find yourself continuously fascinated by something you know is too good to be true? I've fallen victim to that kind of thing more times than I can count. It probably started out with Santa, and it was taken to the next level by the tooth fairy. In both cases, I probably knew that they weren't real before I was willing to admit it, but part of me just wanted it to be real so badly that I didn't want to accept the obvious truth entirely. As I've gotten older, Santa and the tooth fairy have been replaced in my mind by an even more elusive obsession - the search for an automatic sports betting system that works over the long term.

Arena Football Coming to ESPN
by Vegas Sports Informer - 01/11/2007
Arena Football moving to ESPN was probably overlooked with College Football and the NFL playing. In late December of 2006, the Arena Football League announced a new five-year agreement with the sports network. In this deal with ESPN, the Arena Football League will be giving the network rights to a minimum of 26 games and minority ownership of the league.

Ranking the Playoff Quarterbacks
by Trevor Whenham - 01/10/2007
And then there were eight. Eight teams are left on the road to the Super Bowl, and eight quarterbacks have the chance to be either heroes or goats. Football is rightfully known as the ultimate team sport, but the eight men who will take the snaps this weekend have more responsibility for the ultimate success or failure of their teams than anyone else. Since they're so important, and since we can never talk about football too much, here's an attempt to handicap this weekend's games by ranking the quarterbacks.

Divisional Playoffs Often Predictable
by Robert Ferringo - 01/08/2007
If last weekend's Wild Card Round taught us anything it should've been that a) Tony Romo is a baby, b) Right now President Bush has the look of a Manning, on the road in the playoffs, after unleashing another awful interception in his own side of the field, and c) when all of the bobblehead media and general betting public are saying and expecting the same results then you should know that the exact opposite is about to happen.

NFL Playoff Betting Guide
by Robert Ferringo - 01/02/2007
I've been up for about 64 of the last 72 hours. I reek of John Daniels and have spent the better part of the last day yelling, "I love me some me!!!" into the faces of complete strangers and firing produce off the 11th floor balcony of a downtown Atlanta hotel. Oh yeah, and I took a god damn beating in Week 17 of the NFL - which I hate more than crabs or waiting in line at the airport - when I backed the wrong dogs. But hey, I'm having a better weekend than the Husseins or just about anyone traveling in Indonesia.
