Portland Earning Fat Profits For Money Line Players
by Harry Brewer - 12/19/2007
The Portland Trailblazers have won and covered every game since their last lost on Dec. 2 to the San Antonio Spurs. This is now the hottest team in the league. The question to be asked is whether they are for real or if they are just playing above their heads on this current winning streak.

NBA Quarters Betting
by Trevor Whenham - 11/29/2007
When it comes to betting the NBA, too many bettors limit themselves to only thinking about which team will cover the spread on the whole game, or whether the whole game will go over or under the total. That is obviously a viable way to bet on The Association, and for many people it is very effective. However, by limiting yourself to just the NBA odds on the whole games you are almost certainly missing out on profitable betting opportunities, and you are not getting all of the possible return out of your handicapping effort. To maximize your efforts, you should really be looking at betting NBA quarters and halves.

Orlando Magic Betting Outlook
by Trevor Whenham - 11/28/2007
Though it's still early in the season the NBA has had its share of surprises - the Celtics adapted to their new lineup faster than anyone thought possible, the Bulls are way worse than they should be given their talent, and Cleveland and the Lakers have shown that you can be competitive with just one player as long as that player is of all-world caliber. Perhaps the most pleasant surprise of the new season, though, is the Orlando Magic. At 13-3 they have the second best record in the league, and I am only barely kidding when I say that they have almost clinched the Southeast Division.

Top 10 NBA Buzzer Beaters
by Josh Nagel - 11/28/2007
There are some games that you remember like a significant event in your life; a game with such a memorable outcome that you remember where you were when you saw it. Those memories are stirred when you see the game replayed on ESPN Classic or watch old highlights that are shown when a team or player reaches a milestone.

Best NBA Teams ATS
by Trevor Whenham - 11/21/2007
We're about 10 games into the NBA season. That's not long enough to know who the legitimate contenders are and which teams don't have a chance, but it is long enough for some trends to emerge. Some of what has happened so far will change to some extent in the coming weeks and months. Orlando, for example, is a good team, but are they really the second best team in the league? Probably not, and their record should come back to earth. The Bulls, on the other hand, are almost certainly significantly better than their 2-7 start would indicate.

Boston Celtics Betting
by Trevor Whenham - 11/01/2007
What in the world should we do with the Boston Celtics? The offseason moves have given the franchise and their fans renewed hope, but all it has done for me and most sports bettors is give us a headache. The public is going to be all over the team in the early going, and they will probably stay with them for a while regardless of what happens. Everything you read tells you that the Celtics are the most improved team in the league, they have the best trio of players that there is in the league, and that they are going to be a major force in their division and conference. All that makes me skeptical of what is going to happen, and makes me feel like the smart move is going to be to fade the Celtics and the public early on.

NBA Betting Storylines
by Trevor Whenham - 11/01/2007
It snuck up on me this year, but the NBA season is underway. Sure, I'd heard endlessly about Kobe and his every move, and every time I turned around another promising young player was out for the year with an injury, but the actual season came up with even less buzz than normal. The Association is always fun to bet on, though, so that means that it is time to get up to speed with what is going on from a betting perspective in a hurry. I'll leave the handicapping of the individual teams to you, but here are a few questions and issues that are going to figure prominently into this season from a betting perspective.

NBA Rookie of the Year Odds and Predictions
by Josh Nagel - 09/12/2007
If you're a fan of fantasy sports leagues or simply like rooting for individuals instead of teams, there can be fun and sometimes value to be found in individual proposition bets. They can give you a season-long rooting interest in someone's results and, if you know what you're looking for, you might get decent odds for your dollar.

NBA Finals History and NBA Championship History
by David A. Lane - 08/12/2007
Through the years, interest in the NBA Finals has steadily increased as the league has grown and become more international in nature. Certainly, dramatic performances made by key star players in the clutch haven't hurt the game's popularity at all. Watching two teams of the worlds greatest athletes compete against each other in this best-of-seven series for all the marbles has led to some very memorable match-ups since pro basketball's inception back in the 1946-1947 season.

NBA Referee Tim Donaghy Another Black Eye for League
by Trevor Whenham - 07/25/2007
I would not want to be David Stern right now. The NBA commissioner is in a very ugly position as he is forced to deal with the scandal involving NBA referee Tim Donaghy and the massive implications of it. As I'm sure most sports bettors and handicappers have, I've closely followed the story since it broke to understand the scope of it and what it means. Before sitting down to write this article I wanted to wait until Stern broke his silence yesterday morning at a press conference. That event left me very unsatisfied.

NBA Teams That Can Take Huge Step in Draft
by Trevor Whenham - 06/07/2007
I'm sure I'm not the only one right now who thinks that the NBA Draft is a heck of a lot more interesting than the NBA Finals are going to be. The draft represents possibility and hope and excitement, while it's hard to see these finals as anything other than a foregone conclusion. The draft this year is especially important for a few teams. There are at least four teams in my mind that are just one player away from taking a big step forward.

2007 NBA Finals Preview
by Robert Ferringo - 06/06/2007
While watching the Cleveland Cavaliers this season I couldn't help but notice that Brown, the Cavs' coach, coordinates the rims of his glasses to the suits that he wears. My first thought was that he was just "coordinating" like Mr. Jackson suggested in "Boomerang". But then it hit me: no championship coach spends that much time worrying about how he looks. Bill Belichick looks like he slept under a bridge over the Charles River. Phil Jackson had the grey wafro and was too stoned to care how he looked. Vince Lombardi, Joe Torre, Red Auerbach; you think they spent much time in front of a mirror?

NBA Playoffs: Possible First Round Upsets
by Trevor Whenham - 04/20/2007
As much as I love basketball, I think that the first round of the NBA playoffs is a total waste of time. The difference between the top teams and those that barely scraped into the playoffs is often so large that a competitive, or even interesting, series is nothing more than an impossible dream. The only time that the first round is even remotely entertaining is when there is a very rare upset.

Dallas Mavericks Dominant Straight-Up and ATS
by Trevor Whenham - 03/05/2007
The success of the Dallas Mavericks is well documented and difficult to overstate. They are unquestionably the best team in the NBA. They are currently at about 5/2 to win the NBA Finals, and though that is ridiculously low for a league with 30 teams, you could easily make the argument that the team presents value at that price.

NBA First and Second Half Betting
by Trevor Whenham - 03/01/2007
If you are a serious NBA handicapper, or if you aspire to be, then an understanding of betting NBA halves is a tool you have to have in your toolbox. They likely aren't something you would want to play all of the time, especially the second halves, but they are a powerful way to capitalize on situations that can give you an edge.

Impact of Dwyane Wade Injury for Bettors
by Trevor Whenham - 02/26/2007
How much must it suck to be Pat Riley right now? The Miami Heat coach was in so much physical pain that he had to take time off in the middle of the season to get some surgery. He finally gets reasonably healthy and his best player, Dwyane Wade, goes down with a very serious shoulder injury in the very first game he was back on the bench.

Collapsing NBA Teams
by Trevor Whenham - 02/26/2007
The All-Star Game is over so it's downhill to the end of the season and, for some NBA teams any hope of making the playoffs, or even having a respectable season, is a distant memory. The last 20 or 25 games of the year can be particularly hard for some teams, especially those that are suffering more from bad luck than bad play.

NBA Totals Betting
by Trevor Whenham - 02/22/2007
By the time you reach this point in the NBA season you may be ready to do something different. Though betting on the NBA is very popular, falling only behind the NFL and college football, it is also very difficult. Many seasoned bettors will tell you that there is nothing consistently harder to make a profit in than the NBA.

NBA Betting - Eastern Conference vs. Western Conference
by Trevor Whenham - 02/22/2007
Here's a contentious statement - there is a perception out there that the Western Conference of the NBA is better than the Eastern Conference. Much, much better. Of the ten teams most favored to win the NBA championship only three come from the Eastern Conference.

NBA Moneyline Betting
by Trevor Whenham - 02/21/2007
When it comes to betting the moneyline, people most often probably think of baseball, tennis or even football. When played properly, though, the moneyline can be an excellent way to cash in on the NBA, too. Before you plunge into the moneyline market, though, you really need to know what the bet is and how to maximize your use of it. To brush up your existing knowledge, or to help you in learning about moneylines, here are the things you need to consider to get started:

NBA Midseason Predictions
by Drew Mangione - 02/20/2007
I've got a buddy named B.T., whose NBA prognostication has been uncanny this year. Name me one other guy who had Utah on pace for 55 wins and Toronto leading its division, heading toward 45 wins. He even said the Nets would be sub .500 and the Knicks, behind a much improved Eddie Curry, would be on pace for 36 wins at this point. Uncanny.

NBA Moneyline Parlays
by Trevor Whenham - 02/20/2007
If you would rather pick winners in NBA games without worrying about the point spread then you are probably a moneyline player. If you like big payouts, and you don't mind taking on a fair bit of risk, then you probably choose to play parlays. Though both types of bets are fairly common and well understood, people seem more hesitant to combine the two and play an NBA moneyline parlay. The biggest obstacle to making the bets for most people is the difficulty of understanding what the payout will be and what the risk is.

NBA Teasers: Any Value?
by Trevor Whenham - 02/20/2007
Are you interested in betting teasers in the NBA? You need to ask yourself a simple question - do you find betting teasers fun? If you do, and if you bet on sports largely to have fun, then betting teasers is a good idea for you. If, on the other hand, your goal is long-term profit and minimized house edge then you should probably avoid teasers in all but unique and specific situations. Don't believe me? Let's have a look.

NBA Trade Deadline
by Vegas Sports Informer - 02/20/2007
Thursday is the NBA trade deadline and some big names are being shopped around, as usual. Normally, the NBA trade deadline comes and goes without much fanfare, but with Allen Iverson being dealt already this year, the Denver Nuggets and Philadelphia 76ers could have started something big. Some NBA teams that are looking to improve before the playoffs start could get some much-needed offensive and defensive punch. Here are some of the NBA rumors I heard over the All-Star weekend.

All-Star Break Benefits Some NBA Teams
by Trevor Whenham - 02/19/2007
For some teams the NBA All-Star break couldn't come at a worse time. Teams like Dallas, Toronto and even the Knicks are playing so well of late that the last thing they want to do is take a break from the court and risk losing the momentum that they have built up. Other teams, like Boston, welcome the break, and may even wish that the league didn't have to start up again this year at all. For some teams, whether they like it or not, the All-Star break couldn't have come at a better time. For one reason or another they need a few days off the court. Here's a look at four teams who will likely benefit most from the time off:

Five NBA Teams Where Home Court Makes a Difference
by Trevor Whenham - 02/06/2007
Determining the value of the home field advantage is a very challenging aspect of handicapping the NBA. It's generally thought that the home court is worth three or four points, but it's not as simple as applying that universally. The length of the road trip that the visiting team is on, the distance they have traveled, and the strength and loudness of the home crowd can all make the home court more or less valuable for a team.

Is Revenge A Handicapping Factor in the NBA?
by Trevor Whenham - 02/01/2007
Monday night set up like a dream betting night in the NBA. The previous Friday, Orlando had been embarrassed at home by the lowly Atlanta Hawks. The Magic had been nine point favorites, but Atlanta won by three after Orlando blew a 14-point lead.

Toronto Raptors Have Been an ATM Machine This Season
by Trevor Whenham - 01/29/2007
Chances are probably pretty good that you don't pay a lot off attention to the Toronto Raptors. You really should. They have been a very profitable bet all year. They share with Phoenix the distinction of having covered the most games this season - 26. That's almost 58 percent of the games they have played. They've also been on a bit of a tear recently. They've won seven of their last ten games (and covered six of them) to move back into the lead of the dismal Atlantic Division.

Will Hot ATS Teams in the NBA have Longevity?
by Trevor Whenham - 01/24/2007
At the very simplest, successful handicapping comes down to this - you have to figure out which teams are worth betting on, and then you have to bet on them. It doesn't sound that hard and, when we are rolling well, it isn't. If that's the approach that you want to take then you need a consistent league, and the NBA is at least as good as any other. Teams in the NBA often go on streaks, and the public often doesn't react to these streaks as strongly or as quickly as they might be expected to. That can mean profit.

Which Bad ATS Teams in the NBA Can Get Better?
by Trevor Whenham - 01/18/2007
In all leagues, but especially in the NBA, a team's record against the spread does not correlate to their overall record. The best team ATS so far is the Toronto Raptors. They are 25-15 ATS but only 19-21 straight up. Right behind them is the Phoenix Suns. Their 23-14-1 ATS record isn't as good as the Raps, but their 30-8 straight up record is ridiculously better. The same contrast can be found at the bottom of the ATS list as well.

NBA Home Dogs Have Some Bite
by Harry Brewer - 01/18/2007
The NBA has been a tough league to handicap for the last 20 years. The schedule is fast and furious and it is hard to keep up with injuries, suspensions, hot streaks and trades. Moreover, factors like revenge, travel miles, back-to-backs and coaching nuances are also to be considered. Many times there is less than 24 hours to get the line, handicap the game, and get your bet in before tip-off.

Euroleague Betting Primer
by Trevor Whenham - 01/11/2007
Chances are pretty good that you don't watch a whole ton of Euroleague basketball, or spend much time following it. Neither do I. That's probably okay, but there are a couple of solid arguments in favor of paying at least a little bit of attention to the league full of teams with names I can't pronounce. First of all, more and more players are coming over here to play, and the success of players like Pau Gasol, and perhaps eventually last year's number one pick Andrea Bargnani, will only ensure that more will come in the future.

Phoenix Suns Betting
by Trevor Whenham - 01/04/2007
The Phoenix Suns are the most exciting element of the NBA. Bold statement, I know. As bold as if I were to say that the Yankees have a big payroll, or that Notre Dame isn't very good in bowl games. Not only are they a thrilling, high speed scoring show, but they are also a very profitable team to bet on. Despite being such a high profile public darling, the Suns are 18-12-1 against the spread, and they are 16-7-1 ATS since the middle of November.
