UCLA-Florida Final Four Preview
by Robert Ferringo - 03/30/2007
I'm certain there's been at least a dozen times over the past 358 days that Ben Howland has woken up screaming and howling in the middle of the night. Covered in sweat and fear, the UCLA coach most likely snapped out of a shallow sleep, confused, wondering how it all went so horribly wrong on that fateful night last April.

Georgetown-Ohio State Final Four Preview
by Robert Ferringo - 03/30/2007
I have a little secret. Well, considering the subject matter, it's not so little. But it's a secret, well enough. That is, until you keep reading and what I have to say seeps into your consciousness. Then it's a secret no more. Because the only way a secret can be held between three people is if two of them are dead.

What To Do in Atlanta for the Final Four
by Robert Ferringo - 03/30/2007
As you know, Atlanta is the home of the 2007 Final Four taking place this weekend. It's a perfect choice, seeing as the city has been so great at supporting its bevy of college and pro hoops teams over the years. In fact, Atlanta reminds me a lot of Indianapolis, Boston, and Chicago - some of the great basketball cities in the country. Only it's the exact opposite.

Six Keys to Betting the Final Four
by Trevor Whenham - 03/28/2007
After a whole long college basketball season in which we have had so many games to choose from, this is the strangest week of the season. We have just two games coming up, and we have an entire week to get ready for them. We're not used to having that much time to handicap, and it probably messes with our minds a little bit. It has only been a couple of days since the last games, and I'm already feeling a little cross-eyed. I think, though, that I've at least figured out a few things about these games. As I see it, there are five questions that have to be answered to get a good sense of the games. How you see the answers will largely determine how you see the games turning out.
Self-Interest: Can Bill Self Win Big Games?
by Max - 03/28/2007
With the Final Four now just days away, the Kansas Jayhawks will once again be sitting in Lawrence watching basketball instead of playing in Atlanta. The Jayhawks stumbled in their Elite Eight game against UCLA, falling apart in the second half before losing by the score of 68-55. KU scored just 24 points in the second half - a far cry from the team that averaged over 78 points per game during the regular season. But the Jayhawks were flustered and floundering this game and just were not able to finish in the paint.

Sweet Sixteen Preview: Memphis/Texas A&M
by Robert Ferringo - 03/22/2007
In general, skepticism can be a critical component of the application of our rational thought. Twain. Emerson. Voltaire. George Carlin. All skeptics. While some confuse cynicism with skepticism, I say that the latter keeps Balance and serves as a certain survival tool, preventing us and our souls from falling into the abyss of conformity.

Sweet Sixteen Preview: Pittsburgh/UCLA
by Robert Ferringo - 03/22/2007
All week all we've heard is how similar UCLA and Pittsburgh are. "They both play similar styles. They both have similar coaches. They both have similar players." That's what the bobbleheads are pimping this week because they're lame and they don't really watch much college hoops. But to be honest with you, I don't think that it's entirely appropriate for bettors to approach these teams as "mirror images" of one another, as several columnists have indicated.

Sweet 16 Preview: Ohio State/Tennessee
by Robert Ferringo - 03/21/2007
Quick, name me Ohio State's best non-conference win this season? What was their defining victory outside of the Big 10 this year? I know; it was a tricky one. You really only had two choices: the Buckeyes' two-point home win over Tennessee on Jan. 13 or their seven-point overtime victory over Xavier last weekend. That's it. Those are the only two teams outside of the feeble and decrepit Big Ten that Ohio State actually took down.

Sweet Sixteen Preview: Kansas/Southern Illinois
by Robert Ferringo - 03/21/2007
This one…will be ugly. Real ugly. Like hide-the-children-and-cover-your-eyes ugly. Or Latoya Jackson ugly. Either Kansas is going to run Southern Illinois off the floor and exact their dominance over another second-tier opponent, or Kansas is going to win a grinder against an SIU that might rival "Crossover" as the most painful two hours of basketball in years.

Betting Sweet Sixteen Totals
by Trevor Whenham - 03/21/2007
It's probably because everyone fills out brackets that so many bettors seem to be focused on betting sides during the NCAA tournament. People get accustomed to thinking about winners and losers, so they seem to pay more attention to which team will cover the spread than they do to totals. This is especially true for the casual bettors who only emerge this time of year.

Sweet Sixteen Power Rankings
by Trevor Whenham - 03/21/2007
Just making it to the Sweet 16 is an impressive accomplishment. To get there, teams have to win two games against teams playing at full effort with no reason to hold back. Because of that, you can't really say that any team in the Sweet 16 is playing really badly. That being said, some of the teams are playing significantly better than others.

Sweet Sixteen Betting Trends
by Trevor Whenham - 03/21/2007
I'm looking forward to the Sweet Sixteen and the Elite Eight with great expectation. So much expectation that I can hardly sleep. Until they get here, though, the responsible thing for us to do is to look back on what has already happened to see what we can learn that can be applied to our handicapping going forward.

March Madness Betting: South Region Preview
by Robert Ferringo - 03/14/2007
For the next two weekends the South Region will be giving up its body in the name of Science. It's imperative that it do so in order for the Basketball Gods to conduct a very important hoops experiment. And by "very important" I mean that it will be a true rejection of anything moral or ethical. It will be a bloody and tearful mess, leaving women and children screaming and many men emotionally traumatized for the rest of their wretched lives.

Betting on Wrongly Seeded Teams
by Trevor Whenham - 03/14/2007
I respect the difficulty of the job that the selection committee for the NCAA tournament has to do. They really can't win - no matter what they do some teams are going to be upset, and some analysts are going to think that they are insane. This year it is Syracuse and Drexel that have been at the center of the criticism directed towards the committee, but it's always some team or another.

Ranking the Conferences in the Tourney
by Trevor Whenham - 03/14/2007
These few days between when the bracket comes out and the start of the tournament are torture. On one hand you have all the time you could possibly want to handicap the first round games and prepare yourself for their start. On the other hand, the seconds just tick by so slowly that it seems like tip-off will never arrive.

March Madness Betting: West Region Preview
by Robert Ferringo - 03/13/2007
With two of the tournament favorites (Kansas and UCLA), three other classic programs (Duke, Indiana and Kentucky), a pair of Top 10 staples from this season (Pittsburgh and Southern Illinois) and some dangerous mid-Majors (Holy Cross, VCU and Wright State), the West Region could be one of the most perilous places for bettors to earn a buck this month.

March Madness Betting: East Region Preview
by Robert Ferringo - 03/13/2007
The East Region, which will be decided in the swamps of New Jersey in just two weekends' time, is perhaps the most top-heavy and unpredictable of all regions. Truly, any one of five teams could survive this two-week high-wire act and find their way down to Hotlanta. As a result, the upsets will be more shocking, the games more exciting and the clutch plays more critical because so many teams are separated by nothing more than the hairs on John Thompson III's head.

NCAA Basketball Bracket Help
by Trevor Whenham - 03/13/2007
It's that time of year again - you have to fill out your brackets. There is nothing that you will do over the next year that is more important than this deceptively difficult task. The money that you can pocket if you win your pool is important, but the bragging rights that you get with that win are far, far more valuable.

Travel as a Handicapping Factor in the Tourney
by Trevor Whenham - 03/13/2007
Home court advantage is probably more significant in college basketball than it is in any other sport. Teams are aided significantly by the familiarity of their own gym, the avoidance of travel and the boisterous support of rowdy fans. Good teams are almost unbeatable at home, and questionable teams are much more competitive when they are eating home cooking. Home court advantage often makes handicapping during the regular season relatively simple.

March Madness Betting: Midwest Region Preview
by Robert Ferringo - 03/12/2007
Since this is the beginning of my 2007 NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament predictions and the first of my four NCAA Tournament regional previews I would like to say that my beloved Syracuse Orange got royally screwed this year. I mean, I was speechless. Dumbfounded. Perplexed. Enraged. Convolfulgeoned. That last one isn't even a word, but that's how I felt.

2007 NIT Betting Tips
by Trevor Whenham - 03/12/2007
The Tournament starts on Thursday, but if the conference tournaments got your betting juices flowing then you don't want to wait that long to get some action. There's the play-in game on Tuesday night, but that's just one game, and it's not much of one at that. Thankfully, there is another perfect solution to get your college basketball fix - the NIT.

Make Money in the NIT
by Allen Eastman - 03/12/2007
It's been beaten to death. Drexel and Syracuse got left out of the dance. So did several other deserving schools. But whether it's fair or not, it's time to move on. Both schools will be in the N-I-T, which is loaded with 20-win teams that also feel THEY got shafted by the selection committee. While most of the focus this week will be on the NCAA Tournament, there is serious money to be made in the NIT.

Big 12 Tournament Quarterfinals Preview
by Robert Ferringo - 03/09/2007
Now, to some people that Look could signify that this team is ready to make The Leap and is poised for a Final Four run. To others it could mean that the Jayhawks are doing what they always do: sucking the public in with a dominant late season run before inexplicably losing to a mid-Major school in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.

2007 ACC Tournament Preview
by Robert Ferringo - 03/07/2007
It's not an excuse, and there will be other reasons why and how and when, but Tyler Hansbrough breaking his nose has killed any hope of North Carolina winning the national title. That's right: a bush league play from a program that has been given more free passes for cowardice and crooked behavior than Ted Kennedy or Bill O'Reilly has ended the Tar Heels' championship aspirations.

Conference Tournament ATS Trends
by Trevor Whenham - 03/07/2007
It's conference tournament time. The smaller mid-majors have finished and now it's time for the big boys to step to the plate. By the time Sunday rolls around every conference except the Ivy League will have played their tournaments. If the games that have already been played are any indicator, then there will be all sorts of surprises and upsets. Because of the challenges of handicapping tournaments - condensed schedules, the importance of momentum, different motivations for teams - making a profit this week can often be difficult.

2007 Big East Tournament Preview
by Robert Ferringo - 03/07/2007
The Colossus known as the Big East begins its super-sized conference tournament today on the hallowed ground of Madison Square Garden. The tournament tips off at noon with Villanova and Depaul squaring off and will end Saturday night after a four-day battle of wills.

2007 Big Ten Tournament Preview
by Jordan Adams - 03/06/2007
The thought of a rubber match between the Buckeyes and Badgers does draw some intrigue to the Midwest, but for the most part this year's Big Ten conference tournament seems rather dull. Both Michigan State and Indiana have been competitive but their stay in the top 25 has been short at best.

2007 Atlantic 10 Tournament Preview
by Robert Ferringo - 03/06/2007
I know that the Atlantic 10 doesn't scream, "SEXY" or "EXCITING". In fact, the conference's name can best be compared to that of K-Mart - at one time it meant something significant but now it's more of a punch line.

2007 SEC Tournament Preview
by Jordan Adams - 03/06/2007
Two weeks ago the Florida Gators were perfect in conference play and were thought to be untouchable against SEC foes. Forget February. The real players make their names in March, and right now the defending champs are not looking like a lock in this one.

Possible Tournament Cinderellas
by Trevor Whenham - 03/06/2007
When it comes to handicapping the NCAA tournament, even a monkey can pick a winner in the 1-versus-16 games and some of the other mismatches on the board. Where you make the real money, though, not to mention the bragging rights, is in isolating a few live longshots.

2007 Pac-10 Tournament Preview
by Jordan Adams - 03/05/2007
Ah yes, things are so much more laid back on the West Coast. That's the appeal of the Pac-10 and this offensive inclined conference, or at least don't mention that tidbit to Washington State. The rise of the Cougars this season makes the claim that you don't have to be all scoring to win out on the pacific coast. In fact, you could say Ben Howland inspired the West Coast Defense when his Bruins became quite possibly the best defensive minded program since he arrived from Pittsburgh.

A Deeper Look - WCC Tourney Final
by Strike Point Sports - 03/05/2007

2007 Sun Belt Tournament Preview
by Jordan Adams - 03/02/2007
The Sun Belt is another great example of a conference tournament that will have all competitors scrapping for that coveted at-large birth to the Big Dance. Top seed South Alabama is in, as the Jaguars clinched the regular season title and will now look for a better seed with a sweep of the board.

2007 Southern Conference Tournament Preview
by Robert Ferringo - 02/27/2007
Ah, Charleston. Both the dance and the city conjure up nostalgia for traditional old American staples like the milkman, clean streets, religion and racism. And that aforementioned order was declared at the Southern Conference's website, beckoning fans and players alike to join them in South Carolina for the SoCon Tournament. Heading to historic Charleston to do a little ditty is a must for any team hoping to waltz on to the NCAA Tournament.

2007 Missouri Valley Conference Tournament Preview
by Robert Ferringo - 02/27/2007
The Missouri Valley Conference Tournament tips off on Thursday at the Scottrade Center in St. Louis. The March to the Arch during the regular season in the nation's most heralded mid-Major conference gave us plenty of information on these MVC clubs. But now it's time to put that knowledge into practice during this four-day run through what should be an outstanding tournament.

2007 Horizon League Tournament Preview
by Robert Ferringo - 02/27/2007
I hope that Oklahoma State, Florida State and Illinois are paying attention to the Horizon this week. I'm not talking about the horizon in the form of the NCAA Tournament. I'm talking about the Horizon League Tournament, which may have a drastic impact on exactly what the future holds for these and several other so-called bubble teams.

Possible High Tourney Seeds That Could Be Vulnerable
by Trevor Whenham - 02/27/2007
The NCAA Tournament, the most exciting three weeks in sports, is just around the corner. As we sit here waiting impatiently for the pages on the calendar to turn and the chaos to get underway, all we can do is sit back and speculate about what is going to happen and where the vulnerable spots in the bracket are going to be.
