LA Angels Championship Caliber?
by Allen Eastman - 06/26/2007
I've just watched the Angels finish a three-game sweep of the Pirates that put a lid on interleague play for another year. They have, far and away, the most balanced team in years. They can beat you in so many ways -- solid starting pitching, a lights-out bullpen, defense, speed, depth and of course Vladimir Guerrero. The unsung hero and the glue that keeps it all together is Manager Mike Scoscia. They get my vote for the top team in the majors. Keep in mind that my vote (and a quarter) still wont buy you a newspaper in most major cities. But I say it now: get down on this team to win the American League Pennant and the World Series.
At most books you can find the Angels at 6-1 favorites to win the Fall Classic. The Boston Red Sox are 7-2, the New York Mets are 5-1 and surprisingly the Yankees are 6-1 favs to take it all.
What about winning the American League championship? Boston is 7-4, both the Angels and Cleveland Indians are 3-1 while the Yankees are 7-2 favorites.
These Angels in the Outfield can play. In October I'll say I told you so!
