2007 Kentucky Derby Pace
by Trevor Whenham - 05/01/2007
The pace makes the race. That may be a tired cliche, but in a race as big and congested as the Kentucky Derby is, it's a cliche that is very true. To stand a chance of correctly handicapping the Derby you have to not only look at each horse, but also at how the race is likely to play out. It seems that that is even more important this year, when there are so many horses with a similar class advantage. With the general parity of the field, it seems that whichever horse gets the best trip is going to win.

Look on Positive Side When Handicapping the Derby
by Greg Melikov - 05/01/2007
I like to concentrate on the can dos instead of the can nots when handicapping the Kentucky Derby. So I'm going to accentuate the positive, reminiscent of the hit song in 1944.

2007 Kentucky Derby Facts
by Trevor Whenham - 05/01/2007
The closer we get to the Kentucky Derby, the more attention the race gets and, as a result, the more ridiculous the coverage becomes. Over the next week we'll be inundated with the same trends, the same news, and the same useless facts from a wide variety of sources. Most of what we hear will tell us nothing about the race, and very little of it will do anything to help us handicap the race. I could make some bold statement about how, for your sake and the sake of your wallet, you should ignore all of it, but where's the fun in that?

2007 Kentucky Derby Works
by Trevor Whenham - 04/30/2007
The prep races are all long since over, the field is basically set and all that is left for those of us who are completely obsessed with the Kentucky Derby are the morning works that fill the couple of weeks leading up to the biggest of days in the horse racing world. Horses work every day all across the country, and most of them do it in complete obscurity. For these two weeks, though, the tiniest detail of every work for each Derby horse is filmed, reviewed and speculated on by the hundreds of pairs of eyes that see them live, and the thousands more that wish they did.

Derby Handicapping Questions
by Trevor Whenham - 04/25/2007
The Derby is just over a week away and the field, though not set in stone, is starting to become clear. That means that we can start doing our serious handicapping of the field to find the horses that will carry our hopes of riches. Because of all the factors that make the Derby so unique, handicapping it is as much about ruling horses out as it is finding the perfect horse. It's also about finding a theory about the race that you like and then figuring out which horses best fit your theory.

Betting a Longshot in the Derby
by Trevor Whenham - 04/25/2007
When you're looking at the Derby it is easy to put on the blinkers and look only at the elite horses. Is Curlin better than Street Sense? Is Any Given Saturday good enough to beat Circular Quay? Will Hard Spun pass Nobiz Like Shobiz? Those are all valid questions, but you also need to make sure that you don't forget the rest of the field.

Final Derby Preps Hold Key to Handicapping Strategy
by Greg Melikov - 04/25/2007
Only five horses going back 51 years captured the Kentucky Derby after failing to hit the board in their final prep. And four ran in just two of the six current major preps.

Curlin - Probable Kentucky Derby Favorite
by Trevor Whenham - 04/19/2007
I love horse racing more than just about anything, and the Kentucky is the best part of horse racing. That being said, the race often makes my head hurt. Twenty horses with vastly different backgrounds running a new distance on a track that is new to most of them in front of a small city worth of people makes any attempt at handicapping a huge challenge. At best. This year is setting up to be more puzzling and confounding than any in recent memory, and that's all the fault of one horse - Arkansas Derby winner Curlin.

Will Those Kentucky Derby Jinxes Hold True in 2007?
by Greg Melikov - 04/17/2007
What do Apollo, Regret, Exterminator and Sunny's Halo have in common? Yes, all three have won the Kentucky Derby. But the quartet shares another common thread - the start or perpetuation of jinxes that have held true for decades.

Kentucky Derby 2007: Top Trainers
by Trevor Whenham - 03/30/2007
As much as the Kentucky Derby is about horses, it's also about the colorful and egotistical men who train them. Men like Charlie Whittingham, D. Wayne Lukas and Nick Zito are already legends in the biz. Bob Baffert is good for as many colorful quotes and fascinating comments as anyone in sports. Todd Pletcher is the Tiger Woods of his game these days, piling up wins in significant races pretty much at will. The only problem is that he doesn't have a single Triple Crown race victory in his trophy case. Those are about the only three races he hasn't won, but they are the three that matter most.

Kentucky Derby Betting Tips
by Trevor Whenham - 03/30/2007
The Kentucky Derby won't be here for several weeks, but I'm already dreaming of cashing a big ticket, and I'm sure I'm not alone in those thoughts. In my mind nothing is more exciting than the Derby, and the lead up and anticipation is almost too much to take. It's way too early to do any serious handicapping because we won't have a good idea of the field for several weeks. What we can do, though, is put some thought into our methodology so that we're ready to make a logical pick when the time comes. Here, then, are seven tips and thoughts that you can let bounce around your mind until the real handicapping can begin:

Kentucky Derby 2007: Over-Hyped Horses
by Trevor Whenham - 03/30/2007
Horse racing, perhaps more than any sport, is all about hype. There is so much time between races, and it's very hard to handicap top quality horses that run all across the country. The elite runners often don't run against each other before the marquee races, so direct comparisons are difficult. That means that horses that look good get hyped, and often to a ridiculous extent.
