Atlantic 10 Betting Guide
by Trevor Whenham - 12/21/2007
There are some things about the Atlantic 10 conference that don't make sense - most notably that is has 14 teams. What is making more and more sense every year, though, is that this is a conference worth paying attention to. The quality of play is extremely high, several member teams are regularly making waves beyond the confines of the conference, and betting opportunities abound. If you're a college basketball bettor and you aren't familiar with the conference, you should be. Here's a look at the teams that matter to get you started:

Georgetown-Memphis Preview for Saturday
by Trevor Whenham - 12/20/2007
There have been some big games in college basketball so far this year, but none have been bigger than the showdown between No. 2 Memphis and No. 4 Georgetown on Saturday. Both teams are undefeated, both teams are heading towards high seeds and deep tournament runs, and both teams have impressive star power. The odds aren't set for the game yet, but that doesn't mean that it's too early to take a look at how it breaks down and get a jump on handicapping it.

Eight Surprises In College Basketball
by Trevor Whenham - 12/20/2007
It has kind of snuck up on me, but the college basketball season is already one third over. It has been an outstanding season thus far. There have been great teams full of great players playing great games. Much of what we expected coming into the season has come to fruition - North Carolina, Kansas, Memphis, and UCLA have been very good, for example. Some things, though, haven't worked out quite as expected. Here are eight things that have surprised me so far in the first two months of college action:

Campbell Injury Creates Chaos for Butler Backers
by Robert Ferringo - 12/14/2007
That's what you may be asking yourself right now. Either that, or "How do I tell my kids that Santa blew the money for their Christmas presents on two Thai hookers and a kilo of sweet Bolivian bam-bam at that out-of-town conference last month?" But regardless, Pete Campbell is the embodiment of why betting on college basketball is a fickle proposition, and one fraught with terror.

Ranking College Basketball Conferences ATS
by Trevor Whenham - 12/13/2007
We are at a unique time in the college basketball season. Teams have played enough games that we have a sense of their relative strengths and weaknesses, but conference play hasn't started yet so we can't do head-to-head comparisons. Some teams look better now than they will in February because their schedule has played to their strengths better than the conference season will. Others, like Davidson for example, have had a very rough start to the year, but the experience of playing above their heads will put them in great position later on.

Overvalued College Basketball Teams
by Trevor Whenham - 12/12/2007
During the time when the college basketball season starts, college football and the NFL are in full swing, and the NBA is getting underway, so the attention of sports bettors is divided. With so many teams playing basketball there is way too much information out there for most people to process. Inevitably, that leads to teams being overvalued. Whether it is because bettors are making decisions about a team based on a reputation that represents last season more than this season, or because a team gets too much public attention and faces inflated lines, some teams make a habit of burning up bettor's money. Here's a look at six of the worst offenders.

Which Undefeated College Basketball Teams Could Stay That Way?
by Trevor Whenham - 12/12/2007
For casual college basketball fans, and even for those of us who love the sport and follow it closely, teams with undefeated records can be very seductive. Just as the Patriots' pursuit of perfection is creating such a frenzy in the NFL, the prospect of a team going all the way and cutting down the nets in early April without losing is a romantic ideal that excites that part of us that makes us passionate sports fans in the first place.

Ten Value College Basketball Teams in December
by Robert Ferringo - 12/11/2007
One of the keys of early season college basketball betting success is being able to identify teams that are better than people think. These schools obviously offer the most value in the fresh hoops season and are therefore the ones that you're most likely to turn a profit playing on. We are somewhere between one-quarter and one-third of the way through the season so I thought that I'd tip my hand on a few clubs that I've been banking with and help you better understand what comprises a strong early-season team. Because that's what we're all about here at Doc's Sports: understanding. That and body shots off scantily clad females with flexible moral constitutions.

Handicapping NBA Injuries
by Trevor Whenham - 12/06/2007
In a strange fluke, Tim Duncan and LeBron James, arguably two of the top five players in the NBA, both went down to injuries in the same week. Neither player is out for an extended period of time, but both San Antonio and Cleveland will have to make due without their centerpieces for a while. This proves yet again what we already knew oh so well - even the biggest stars can get injured. When they do, handicapping their teams becomes much more difficult. The Lakers with Kobe are a much different team than they are with him on the bench.

Forecasting the Elite Eight
by Trevor Whenham - 12/06/2007
It's probably a little too soon to be worrying about the Elite Eight. We are, after all, only a month into the college basketball season, and conference play hasn't even started. We don't truly know which teams are any good, and which ones are just pretenders. Just thinking about the three weeks of perfection that is the NCAA Tournament just gets my heart beating, though. Its very cold and snowy right now where I live, so anything that gets the heart beating and warms you up a bit is a very good thing. Here, then, is my first stab at the eight teams that have emerged so far as potential Elite Eight teams. I've gone pretty much true to the form of most Elite Eights - several of the top teams and a couple exciting outsiders.

Top 10 College Basketball Buzzer Beaters
by Josh Nagel - 12/04/2007
There's a reason why most sports fans prefer college basketball over the NBA; it's the same reason casual sports fans suddenly become glued to their TV sets during March Madness.

College Basketball Second Half Betting
by Trevor Whenham - 11/21/2007
Making second half bets is not for everyone, but if you are the kind of bettor that likes the pressure of making quick decisions based on feel and trends instead of intense study and handicapping then they may be the right kind of bets for you.

Early College Tournaments - A Betting Preview
by Trevor Whenham - 11/20/2007
Back in the good old days the college basketball season used to start with the Preseason NIT. Of course, the season didn't used to go on forever, either. Now there are so many tournaments in November that it's almost impossible to keep track of them all. They must make a lot of money or provide helpful exposure for sponsors or something, because new ones are popping up every year. Thanksgiving weekend is when the concentration of tournaments reach its peak.

College Basketball Betting Tips
by Trevor Whenham - 11/15/2007
If you don't bet on college basketball you are missing out. Pretty much every day for five months there is a full menu of games to choose from. If you like high scoring, up-tempo games there is probably at least one for you to handicap. If you like low scoring, defensive battles then you're in luck, too. It's like the baseball season, only there are 10 times more teams, and there are many more opportunities for value.

Worst College Basketball Scandals
by Joe Paciella - 11/15/2007
There is no good without evil. For every story of Jimmy V and his 1983 Wolfpack, or those Villanova Wildcats, who played a nearly perfect game to shock heavily favored Georgetown, there's one of Boston College and point shaving or Baylor and Dave Bliss. Five Value Teams in College Basketball
by Trevor Whenham - 11/14/2007
For people who aren't highly committed college basketball bettors and fans, the sport can be overwhelming. There are so many teams in so many conferences that keeping track of it all, or even having a good sense of what is going on, can be almost impossible if you don't put the effort in. That scares a lot of people away, but it shouldn't. You can be successful on a smaller scale just by getting to know a few teams and paying attention to what they have to offer and how they are performing.

2007 College Basketball Predictions
by Robert Ferringo - 06/24/2007
With rosters now (pretty) firmly set for the 2007-08 we can take a look at odds to cut down the nets in San Antonio next April. I've taken a gander of the posted futures odds for next year's title contenders and selected a few teams and numbers that jumped out at me. Here are the clear favorites to rock the Alamodome for my 2007 college basketball predictions, as well as a few sleepers and some teams to avoid when considering a long-term play:

2007 Southern Conference Tournament Preview
by Robert Ferringo - 02/27/2007
Ah, Charleston. Both the dance and the city conjure up nostalgia for traditional old American staples like the milkman, clean streets, religion and racism. And that aforementioned order was declared at the Southern Conference's website, beckoning fans and players alike to join them in South Carolina for the SoCon Tournament. Heading to historic Charleston to do a little ditty is a must for any team hoping to waltz on to the NCAA Tournament.

2007 Missouri Valley Conference Tournament Preview
by Robert Ferringo - 02/27/2007
The Missouri Valley Conference Tournament tips off on Thursday at the Scottrade Center in St. Louis. The March to the Arch during the regular season in the nation's most heralded mid-Major conference gave us plenty of information on these MVC clubs. But now it's time to put that knowledge into practice during this four-day run through what should be an outstanding tournament.

2007 Horizon League Tournament Preview
by Robert Ferringo - 02/27/2007
I hope that Oklahoma State, Florida State and Illinois are paying attention to the Horizon this week. I'm not talking about the horizon in the form of the NCAA Tournament. I'm talking about the Horizon League Tournament, which may have a drastic impact on exactly what the future holds for these and several other so-called bubble teams.

Possible High Tourney Seeds That Could Be Vulnerable
by Trevor Whenham - 02/27/2007
The NCAA Tournament, the most exciting three weeks in sports, is just around the corner. As we sit here waiting impatiently for the pages on the calendar to turn and the chaos to get underway, all we can do is sit back and speculate about what is going to happen and where the vulnerable spots in the bracket are going to be.

Still Value in College Basketball Futures
by Robert Ferringo - 02/15/2007
The NCAA men's college basketball Final Four will take place this year from March 31-April 2 at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta, my adopted backyard. And yes, I will spend that weekend harassing college coaches, misleading tourists, stalking cheerleaders and fleecing any poor soul whose team is in the running but has no chance to win. It will be a grand time and I'm looking forward to it in the same way that I'm looking forward to 70-degree days and 18-hole golf outings in March.

Maximize Profits During Hot Streaks
by Allen Eastman - 02/15/2007
Short-term success in gambling is a common and almost expected goal. However, over the long run any bettor can expect the mathematical probabilities to take hold, meaning their win-loss record should conform more closely to the natural gambling odds of 50-50.

There's a natural letdown that occurs from all the hair-raising, blood-boiling, shock-inducing, gleeful dancing and general mayhem that occurs through a weekend's worth of gambling action. And it's a scientific fact that Mondays are the most difficult day of the week for sports and gaming fans across the world, with Monday Sports Syndrome linked to illness and famine across the globe. OK, so I made that last part up. But it the start of a new week can be a cold splash of water to the face for Men of Action like you and I.

Banking on CBB Teams That Have Thrown in the Towel
by Trevor Whenham - 02/08/2007
It's right around this time in the college basketball season that teams lose their will to compete. Bad teams that haven't had anything to play for in weeks start give less than 100 percent on the court. Some teams that started the season with promise will start losing as easily as they were winning earlier in the year.

College Basketball Rivalries
by Trevor Whenham - 02/06/2007

Tips for Big Ten Basketball Betting
by Trevor Whenham - 02/05/2007
The Big Ten was disappointing in college football this year, and it is just as disappointing in college basketball. I love the Big Ten, so it hurts me to have to admit that. Beyond Wisconsin, the elite football teams were exposed as frauds in the bowls. Beyond Wisconsin and Ohio State in basketball, there isn't too much to get excited about.

NCAA Bubble Teams
by Trevor Whenham - 02/05/2007
The NCAA tournament is still several weeks away, but true college basketball fans know that the race to get in is well under way. There are several teams that have already locked up their positions, and even more that only have to keep doing what they have been doing to get their ticket to the Big Dance punched. The loneliest place to be at this time of year, though, is perched on the bubble.

Which Teams are College Basketball ATS Mirages?
by Trevor Whenham - 01/26/2007
If you find yourself wandering aimlessly through the desert, the last thing you want to see is a mirage. Sure, the palm trees, the big, blue lake with the fountain in the middle and an army of bikini clad bartenders catering to your every whim would seem perfect when you see it, but imagine your disappointment when you realize that it isn't real. A handful of sand just wouldn't taste as good as a margarita fed to you by the Olsen Twins. In much the same way, a team that seems like it is a good bet until you get your money on it, at which point it reveals itself as a hopeless loser, is every bettor's nightmare.

Focusing On One College Hoops Conference Can Lead to Profits
by Trevor Whenham - 01/11/2007
You'll hear people say all the time that the best way to be profitable when betting on college basketball is to pick a conference or two and get to know everything that there is to know about them. That way, when conference play starts, you'll have a very good sense of what the teams are capable of, and you'll do a much better job of spotting value in the lines in those conference games. I buy that, but only partly.

Northern Arizona Basketball
by Max - 01/09/2007
In college hoops, there are over 300 teams that play Division I basketball. And, unlike football, all of the teams have a chance to play for the National Championship in April. But like football, most of the national attention is given to the Big Six conferences. The attention is deserved; it's been since that incredible 1990 UNLV Runnin' Rebels team that someone from a non-BCS conference won the national title.

College Hoops Betting: Conference Play
by Trevor Whenham - 01/04/2007
I'm a huge college basketball fan, but I have to say that I am relieved that January is finally here. Non-conference play provides some intrigue and some fascinating match-ups that we wouldn't otherwise see, but it also gives us so many ridiculous games and hideous mismatches that I'm not sad that it's in the rearview mirror.
