College Football Highlights, Week 10
by Joshua Fairbanks - 11/13/2006
Each week of the season Doc's Sports will look at some of the most important college football highlights that took place over the previous weekend. This is where to look to find out who covered in the big games, where the important line moved occurred as well as which teams were hot against the total.
Georgia Defeats No.5 Auburn Saturday, 37-15.
If you took the No. 5 Auburn Tigers to take down a battered Georgia Bulldogs this Saturday, you had another thing coming. Not only did Georgia cover their 11.5-point spread, but they won the game straight up covering the line plus another 22.5. At 6-4, Georgia was looked at as a team that could not match up with Auburn. The Bulldogs put up a 23 spot in the third quarter leaving Auburn with a deficit that they could not overcome. This was no squeaker upset. Georgia owned this game from wire to wire.
No. 25 Nebraska Defeats No. 23 Texas A&M Saturday, 28-27
This game was easily the best push of the weekend for college football. Texas A&M was a meager one-point underdog and did exactly what was expected of them by oddsmakers. It took a last second roughing the passer call to give Nebraska a last second TD pass to win on Saturday leaving the Aggies devastated. The total of this game was also a tight one. The two teams just managed to cover the 52-point O/U line by a tight three points at 55. Needless to say, this game was one where bettors were pulling their hair out.
No. 18 Wake Forest Defeats Florida State Saturday, 30-0
If you were still doubting Wake Forest coming into this week, I'd say its time to believe. The Demon Deacons are legit this year and they proved it by lighting up Florida State. For some reason the (5-5) Seminoles were favored by a staggering 9.5 points. To say the least, they did not cover. Not only did Florida State lose, but they put a big fat goose egg on the scoreboard at home. Wake has been (2-0) against the spread the last two weeks and is (6-3) ATS for the season. Anyone smell an ACC title yet?
Arizona Defeats No. 8 California Saturday, 24-20.
This game was probably the best comeback of the day. At halftime, California was beating Arizona, as most were predicting, by two touchdowns. In the second half, Arizona shut down the mighty Cal offense, allowing them just one field goal. With Arizona's high-ranked defense starting to roll, the Wildcat's offense took over and stole the game. Arizona found a way to put up three touchdowns in the last two quarters, with 14 points coming in the fourth quarter. Over the last two weeks, Arizona is 2-0 as an underdog against spreads of 14 or more. Not only did the Cats cover both of these weeks, but they found a way to win them straight up. California is 0-3 ATS the last three weeks as large favorites. Maybe it's time to re-evaluate some of California's large lines.
No. 6 Florida Defeats South Carolina Saturday, 17-16.
This game was one of the most exciting games of the day. Spreads aside, it was a fantastic football game. The mere difference in this match-up was a missed extra point by South Carolina. Although Florida is 9-1 this year, they are a poor 3-7 against the spread. This game really showed nothing new for bettors. Once again, Florida won a tight one and failed to cover their line. South Carolina had a last-second FG blocked to seal the win for Florida. To me, this game had upset written all over it. Florida continued their trend of low scoring games at home posting the 'under' at an impressive 1-6 in Gainesville. South Carolina also continued their low scoring 'unders' on the road at 1-3 this season. The strong play of the total seemed to come through yet again.
Kansas State Defeats No. 4 Texas Saturday, 45-42.
A late game comeback was too little too late for No.4 Texas this Saturday. Not only did this devastating loss crush Texas' chance of a title bid, but Texas got beaten by a mediocre (6-4) Kansas State team in a shootout. Texas is now 5-5 this season ATS and have really fallen short of bettors expectations. It seemed like the only strong play for this match-up was the over. Both teams scored 30 plus points in their last three weeks leaving the total of 51 looking like an easy mark.
