What are NBA Picks Against the Spread?

Most NBA bettors are going to make NBA picks against the spread. This is also known as NBA picks ATS. Sportsbooks give each NBA team a handicap of X amount of points. That means if books think the Lakers are 4 points better than the Celtics they will offer a line of Lakers -4. If a Doc's handicapper has reason to believe the Lakers are much more than 4 points better, his pick against the spread would be to take the Lakers -4. This is how all bets on the spread work unless bookmakers consider both teams to be evenly matched, in which case the line is a pick, AKA pick'em. At Doc's the majority of our NBA selections are against the spread. However, there can be outstanding value on betting NBA totals.

What are NBA Over/Under Picks?

The pace of the game, as well as which team dictates the pace, is a key factor when handicapping basketball games. When pace is an especially strong signal, it may dictate a pick on the over/under. An NBA over/under pick is another way of referring to a prediction on an NBA game point total. NBA total lines are usually well above 200 in today's NBA making them harder for the betting public to find value. For example, the 2004 Detroit Pistons team was very consistently within 5 points of the 90 they averaged. In today's NBA, greater scoring means greater variance. However, professional basketball handicappers can use this to their advantage as the sportsbooks also try to keep track of the higher scoring NBA totals. What are NBA Parlay Picks?

Parlay picks are sucker bets they say! Never bet and NBA parlay they say! Bettors that speak in these absolutes clearly haven't learned how to find value betting basketball. Sure, the payout on parlays at most sportsbooks have gone down to the point where putting two of your picks together for the sake of winning more is not a good investment. But what if your parlay picks could be made on the same game? That is called a correlated NBA parlay. Many sportsbooks offer the ability to make NBA bets against the spread and total in the same game. So if you have a great read on a game and expect one team to quit and fall behind, you may decide to make an NBA parlay prediction. At Doc's our experts will offer a free parlay pick in rare cases. It is not common because we need to find value for our customers on both lines before they move. If our parlay prediction is indeed on the same game, we need to confirm there is value regardless of the fact that you can't line shop the odds on a parlay. Both bets in a parlay must be made at the same sportsbook. If there is a free selection on the total over of -14 and under 200 it was offered knowing that those lines can be found at most Las Vegas sportsbooks and online.

What are NBA Playoff Predictions?

Once the regular season is over the NBA tends to resemble the national football league in many ways. Bettors have much more time to make their NBA playoff picks as teams travel to each other's arenas and rest between series. Making successful NBA playoff predictions is as much about when you bet as it is who you bet on. A series might not start for days. That means an NBA spread may move quite a few points especially as the public bets closer to the action. If we see value in a playoff prediction it will rely heavily on getting the line we are quoting in said NBA pick. In the words of the great Tony George, "We are betting numbers, not teams!" 4-Unit Play Take LA Lakers -4.5 over Orlando (10:30 p.m. EST, Thursday November 21)
The Lakers have LeBron and AD questionable, but we expect one or both to go tonight. The Lakers have been prefect at home and they are playing extremely well right now. They catch the Magic in a bad spot on a back-to-back after a grueling game against the Clippers, which they lost. That dropped them to 2-7 on the road. We think the Lakers pull away in the fourth quarter as the fatigue really starts to set in for Orlando.

The Spurs are a tough matchup for most teams when Wemby is on the floor so with him out they must play a different style and that paid off against OKC last time out. This team is going to be a thorn in the side of the Western Conference elite all season so with Utah in town for this one they have a chance to get a win and get back to .500 on the year. Utah is in full rebuild/tank mode so they will play hard, but San Antonio is the better team even with Wemby out. Lay the small number this evening.

4-Unit Play. #532. Take Toronto Raptors +8 over Minnesota Timberwolves (Thursday @ 7:40pm est)

We have won 4 straight in a row in college basketball for 12-5 (70%) season and +3470, let's make it 5 straight with a win today as we have a 7*cbb today. We will look to make the same run here in the NBA and we start with the Raptors here. Remember, what you have here is a Toronto team that we believe is on an uptick. Although very few people can see the uptick as this team is 3-12 straight up in wins but it is easy to forget that Minnesota is 8-6 - which means, Minnesota has lost 6 times already this year and is very close to .500 so it's not like Minnesota is some unbelievable team that does not lose. Minnesota also has Boston on deck mind you. Minnesota beat this team by 11 points earlier this year in early October when Toronto was not healthy nor were they playing well. Minnesota comes off big back to back wins over Phoenix and the Kings and they have not won 3 in a row all year and I do not see them having a great output after 130 and 120 points the last 2 nights. Toronto just dropped 130 points on the Pacers, huge win outright as a small underdog at home which says they were expected to play well, this team also took Boston to OT and lost by just 3 points, nearly beat Detroit and the Clippers. This team had 9 guys score at least 4 points last game and honestly, we think Toronto with revenge, gaining confidence over Indiana win, I think Toronto will be just fine today and they have an outside shot of winning outright.

3 Unit Play Take #529 Detroit -1.5 over Charlotte (7:10pm est):

I really like this Detroit Pistons team this year. They come into this game one of the most improved teams in the NBA this season and especially of late winning 4 of their last 7 and their three losses were in overtime, by 2 points in regulation and in the 2nd game of a back to back spot. They are clearly the better of these two teams.

3 Unit Play - Take #533 Utah (+2.5) Over San Antonio. (8:00p.m, Thursday, November 21st)
Utah comes into this game 3-11 on the season, 3-7 in their last 10 games, and presently on a 3-game losing streak after dropping to the Lakers on Tuesday in a 124-118 final. San Antonio is now 7-8 on the year, 5-5 in their last 10 games, and coming off a 110-104 win over OKC on Tuesday. San Antonio is playing way over their RSI (relative strength index). This team is way overextended and needs to retrace back to their capable level. Utah has been through the meat grinder when it comes to strength of schedule, dealing with Phoenix, Dallas, Sacramento, LA Clippers, and LA Lakers. Utah finally gets a perfect setup. After dealing with some of the toughest teams in the league, they get to deal with a team that’s way over extended and more than capable of being beaten down. This season, San Antonio is a brutal 1-5 ATS after a win, 1-2 ATS as home favorites, and 7-8 ATS this season. This is where I believe Utah erupts and truly blows San Antonio out of the water. We are going to lay lower today after smacking our 6-Unit Winner last night and rinse some profits for a bigger opportunity in the near future. That is why this is a 3-U play. Respect risk, collect profits, rinse, and repeat!
