2018 Emmy Awards Betting Odds and Expert Predictions
It's that time of year again: dust off that tuxedo, call your favorite clothing designer, and DVR the new fall season of TV shows, because all of this means the Emmy Awards are on TV Sunday night. The 70th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards are this Sunday and the Emmys honor the best in U.S. primetime television programming. The Emmy Awards will be held, as always, at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles. And since this is an awards show, you know there is gambling involved!
Online sportsbook MyBookie has posted 16 betting odds on the 70th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards, and I do see some great value this Sunday night. Last year at the Emmy Awards we saw mostly big favorites bringing home the statues, but anyone can win this year. The only underdog that won last year was Thandie Newton from "Westworld", and that price was only +135. Of course, I didn't have that underdog, but that's what the Primetime Emmy Awards gives you sometimes with a slew of big favorites winning. But three years ago we saw a 50-1 long shot cashing. There is a money opportunity in all betting categories this year, and I'm smelling more than one underdog winning an Emmy.
Here are my predictions on 16 Emmy categories, and as always I would highly recommend betting early because these betting numbers will move, especially the heavy favorites.
Outstanding Drama Series
The Handmaid's Tale -400
Game of Thrones +300
The Americans 14-1
Westworld 25-1
This Is Us 33-1
The Crown 20-1
Stranger Things 50-1
(Last year winner: "The Handmaid's Tale", Odds -450) Last year "The Handmaid's Tale" won as heavy favorites, and this year it's the same. I don't see anybody beating "The Handmaid's Tale", but the series finale of 'The Americans' was nothing but brilliant, and I would love to see them upset the favorite.
Prediction: The Handmaid's Tale -400
Outstanding Comedy Series
Atlanta -200
The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel +120
Barry 14-1
Black-ish 33-1
Curb Your Enthusiasm 33-1
Glow 50-1
Silicon Valley 50-1
Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt 50-1
(Last year winner: "Veep", Odds -225) With shows like "Veep" and "Modern
Family" not on the list, it's pretty certain that "Atlanta" will take home
the win. I'm actually shocked that "Atlanta" isn't higher but keep an eye
out for HBO series "Barry" at 14-1. No offense to "Atlanta", but I see
either HBO or Netflix taking this category, and I'm calling an upset for
Outstanding Comedy Series. Nope it's not "Barry", but give Mrs. Maisel a
shot!
Prediction: The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel +120
Outstanding Lead Actor Comedy
Donald Glover - Atlanta -300
Bill Hader - Barry +200
Ted Danson - The Good Place 20-1
Anthony Anderson - Black-ish 33-1
Larry David - Curb Your Enthusiasm 33-1
William H. Macy - Shameless 33-1
(Last year winner: Donald Glover, Odds -150) A repeat winner will be announced Sunday night for this category as I see Donald Glover being a two-time champ. The only underdog that could steal this category is Bill Hader, but I just don't see it happening.
Prediction: Donald Glover - Atlanta -300
Outstanding Lead Actor Drama
Sterling K. Brown - This Is Us -160
Matthew Rhys - The Americans +120
Milo Ventimiglia - This Is Us +800
Jeffrey Wright - Westworld 20-1
Ed Harris - Westworld 25-1
Jason Bateman - Ozark 33-1
(Last year winner: Sterling K. Brown, Odds -200) Sterling K. Brown won last year as the -200 favorite, but I don't see him repeating Sunday night. "The Americans" ended an outstanding series, and I'm calling for Matthew Rhys pulling out the upset. Some of my entertainment sources agree with me. Hurry up and jump on Rhys at +120 because I see this number moving all weekend long.
Prediction: Matthew Rhys - The Americans +120
Outstanding Lead Actress Comedy
Rachel Brosnahan - The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel -1000
Tracee Ellis Ross - Black-Ish +600
Allison Janney - Mom 11-1
Issa Rae - Insecure 25-1
Pamela Adlon - Better Things 25-1
Lily Tomlin - Grace and Frankie 33-1
(Last year winner: Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Odds -450) Last year Julia Louis-Dreyfus won as a huge favorite, and this year I see the biggest favorite on the board cashing. No one beats Rachel Brosnahan Sunday night!
Prediction: Rachel Brosnahan - The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel -1000
Supporting Actress Comedy
Kate McKinnon - Saturday Night Live +110
Alex Borstein - The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel +150
Laurie Metcalf - Roseanne +400
Megan Mullally - Will & Grace 14-1
Betty Gilpin - GLOW 33-1
Leslie Jones - Saturday Night Live 33-1
Zazie Beetz - Atlanta 50-1
Aidy Bryant - Saturday Night Live 50-1
(Last year winner: Kate McKinnon, Odds -400) This category is probably the toughest to predict, and getting Kate McKinnon at plus-money seems like a steal. Again, I don't see a repeat winner in this category, and I see Alex Borstein from "The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel" stealing the trophy as we hit another plus-money Emmy ticket.
Prediction: Alex Borstein - The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel +150
Supporting Actor Comedy
Henry Winkler - Barry -230
Tony Shalhoub - The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel +350
Brian Tyree Henry - Atlanta +600
Tituss Burgess - Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt +800
Alec Baldwin - Saturday Night Live 10-1
Kenan Thompson - Saturday Night Live +500
Louis Anderson - Baskets 50-1
(Last year winner: Alec Baldwin, Odds -330) I really hope Alec Baldwin doesn't win again! OK, we get it the Hollywood elites don't like Donald Trump, but really there are so many other outstanding actors in this category that deserve the Emmy statue. I believe 'The Fonz" wins Sunday night, and I'm hoping the price gets bet down because I really don't want to lay more than -200 on Winkler.
Prediction: Henry Winkler - Barry -230
Supporting Actor Drama
David Harbour - Stranger Things -300
Peter Dinklage - Game of Thrones +350
Joseph Fiennes - The Handmaid's Tale +350
Matt Smith - The Crown 50-1
Nikolaj Coster-Waldai - Game of Thrones 33-1
Mandy Patinkin - Homeland 50-1
(Last year winner: John Lithgow, Odds -450) I really believe that David Harbour will win this, and as you can tell he is the betting favorite. However, I think an underdog can challenge in this category. Peter Dinklage at +350 seems too good to be true, and with a close category I feel I'm going with "Game of Thrones" to take home the winner in this spot.
Prediction: Peter Dinklage - Game of Thrones +350
Supporting Actress Drama
Ann Dowd - The Handmaid's Tale +100
Yvonne Strahovski - The Handmaid's Tale +150
Thandie Newton - Westworld +375
Lena Headey - Game of Thrones +600
Vanessa Kirby - The Crown 12-1
Alexis Bledel - The Handmaid's Tale 20-1
Millie Bobby Brown - Stranger Things 40-1
(Last year winner: Thandie Newton, Odds +135) "Westworld" took home the statue in this category last year, and this year all I'm going to say is that someone from "The Handmaid's Tale" will win. If "The Handmaid's Tale" gets upset in this category, look out for Lena Headey at +600. Maybe this is her year to win.
Limited Series
The Assassination of Gianni Versace -1500
Godlless +600
Patrick Melrose 16-1
The Alienist 16-1
Genius: Picasso 20-1
(Last year winner: Big Little Lies, Odds -225) Not much typing here!
Prediction: The Assassination of Gianni Versace -1500
Best Actor Limited Series or TV Movie
Darren Criss - Assassination of Gianni Versace -330
Benedict Cumberbatch - Patrick Melrose +250
Antonio Banderas - Genius: Picasso 12-1
John Legend - Jesus Christ Superstar 18-1
Jesse Piemon - USS Callister 33-1
Jeff Daniels - The Looming Tower 40-1
(Last year winner: Riz Ahmed - The Night Of, Odds -200) I see only two actors in this category possibly getting their name called, and that is Darren Criss or Benedict Cumberbatch. Criss is the big favorite, and I see him winning, but I'm also putting some small cash on Cumberbatch because getting him at +250 is an outstanding price.
Prediction: Darren Criss - Assassination of Gianni Versace -330
Best Actress Limited Series or TV Movie
Laura Dern - The Tale -600
Regina King - Seven Seconds +500
Jessica Biel - The Sinner +750
Michelle Dockery - Godless 18-1
Edie Falco - Law & Order True Crime 40-1
Sarah Paulson - American Horror Story 40-1
(Last year winner: Nicole Kidman - Big Little Lies, Odds -250) Not much typing here!
Prediction: Laura Dern - The Tale -600
Best Supporting Actress Limited Series or TV Movie
Penelope Cruz - Assassination of Gianni Versace -150
Judith Light - Assassination of Gianni Versace +200
Merritt Wever - Godless +550
Sara Bareilles - Jesus Christ Superstar 15-1
Letitia Wright - American Horror Story 35-1
Adina Porter - Black Museum 50-1
(Last year winner: Laura Dern - Big Little Lies, Odds -190) As you can tell, "Big Little Lies" was the big winner last year, and this year just pencil in the "Assassination of Gianni Versace". Both Penelope Cruz and Judith Light deserve the win, and one of them will get the win. Give me the underdog just because I use to watch her on "Who's the Boss".
Prediction: Judith Light - Assassination of Gianni Versace +200
Reality Competition Program
RuPaul's Drag Race -500
The Voice +500
The Amazing Race 12-1
American Ninja Warrior 22-1
Project Runway 25-1
Top Chef 30-1
(Last year winner: RuPaul's Drag Race, Odds -250) Another win for "RuPaul's Drag Race"!!!
Prediction: RuPaul's Drag Race -500
Television Movie
Black Mirror: USS Callister -650
The Tale +300
Fahrenheit 451 30-1
Flint 35-1
Paterno 40-1
(Last year winner: Black Mirror, Odds -175) Not much typing here!
Prediction: Black Mirror: USS Callister
Variety Talk Series
Last Week Tonight With John Oliver -500
The Late Show with Stephen Colbert +500
Full Frontal with Samantha Bee +800
The Daily Show with Trevor Noah 11-1
Jimmy Kimmel Live 35-1
The Late Late Show with James Corden 40-1
(Last year winner: John Oliver, Odds -140) Let's seeā¦ last year John Oliver won and he was only -140 and now this year he is -500 to repeat. I smell back-to-back wins for Mr. Oliver!
Predictions: Last Week Tonight With John Oliver -500
