Toney-Peter Preview: Heavyweight Saviors?
by Trever "Deuce Drop" Malagon - 08/28/2006
James Toney verses Sam Peter is going to be an interesting bout to witness. First off the question on everyone's mind is how much is James Toney going to weigh? And what kind of shape is James Toney going to be in? Is he going to enter the ring looking like the Michelin Man? Or is he going to step into the ring looking like a top contender instead of a hot dog eating champion?

Forrest Tops Quartey by Disputed Decision
by Ryan Songalia - 08/08/2006
New York City's Madison Square Garden was filled with mixed reactions to the verdict in the junior middleweight fight between Ike Quartey and Vernon Forrest. The arena was a chorus of discontent, reacting to the disputable unanimous decision victory that was awarded to Vernon Forrest on a night in which he did not appear to be the more effective fighter. The "Now or Never" event was promoted by Lou Dibella Entertainment.

The Fan's Guide: Quartey-Forrest Preview
by Ryan Songalia - 08/01/2006
When Ike Quartey and Vernon Forrest step into the ring on Aug. 6, both men will know exactly what their yet to be determined fates mean. Both former welterweight champions are aware that a loss all but erases any hope to re-ascend the plateaus they both occupied. On the other hand, a win would elevate them to the top of the wide-open junior middleweight division. For two of the most gifted fighters in the world, the stakes couldn't be any higher.

Will any Heavyweight Step Into the Spotlight? (Part Two)
by Ryan Songalia - 07/06/2006
Perhaps the least loved champ of the last 20 years, John Ruiz has become a poster child for this lackluster era of heavyweights. He first appeared on the scene in 1996, being blown out in 19 seconds by David Tua. Fighting in obscurity over the next four years, he somehow found himself the beneficiary of a title shot when the WBA's shady politics stripped Lennox Lewis of the belt. In a close fight, Evander Holyfield defeated Ruiz for the vacant title belt. After their first encounter, the WBA played masochist, ordering a rematch.

Is Larios a Live Dog?
by Trever "DeuceDrop" Malagon - 06/30/2006
This July 2 Oscar Larios (56-4, 36 KO's) moves up in weight to take on Manny Pacquiao (41-3, 33 KO's) for the WBC Super Featherweight title. There are many fans and boxing observers that think Larios is just another opponent for Pacquiao, and many people think that the fight is a complete mismatch. There is an old saying in boxing that styles make fights, and this couldn't be more of a fact then when these two fighters step into the ring.

Will any Heavyweight Step Into the Spotlight? (Part One)
by Ryan Songalia - 06/28/2006
An old adage suggests that as the heavyweight division goes, so goes the sport of boxing. The heavyweight champion is generally perceived as being the toughest man alive. Former heavyweight champion James L. Sullivan once remarked "I can lick anyone in the house", a testament to the heavyweight championship being the greatest prize in sports. Similarly, Mike Tyson declared himself "The Baddest Man on the Planet", which is what the heavyweight champion has been interpreted as.

by Jeremy "Fasttalker" Bjornberg - 05/10/2006
Ricardo Mayorga (28-6-1, 23 KOs) finally got what he had coming to him after he did nothing but fling childish insults at Oscar De La Hoya (38-4, 30 KOs). The Golden Boy responded by pounding Mayorga from pillar to pillar.

The Golden Boy, the golden era and the golden future. What keeps Oscar De La Hoya going? Sworn Enemies - Mayweather/Judah Preview
by Jeremy "Fasttalker" Bjornberg - 03/30/2006
Pretty Boy Floyd Mayweather (35-0, 24 KOs) will be taking on career tease Zab Judah (34-3, 25 KOs) in what could have been one of the most hyped fights of the year. The only thing that could take any of the steam off the fight would be a loss by the Brooklyn big mouth, and he managed to just that against journeyman Carlos Baldomir (42-9-6, 12 KOs).

Doc's Boxing: Cotto-Bronco Preview
by Drew "King" James - 03/02/2006
What are the three most important things a professional considers when betting a game? Price, price and price. Getting the best number on every game will turn a 50% handicapper into a net winner and allows a 53% capper to show a handsome profit at season's end. Every penny you're able to shave off of a price adds to your bottom line.

On Saturday night Pomona native Shane Mosley (42-4, 36 KOs) regained his Sugar by out slugging Oxnard native Ferocious Fernando Vargas (26-3, 22 KOs) until referee Joe Cortez was forced to stop the contest due to the huge welt above the left eye of Vargas.

The Las Vegas Report -- Margarito vs. Gomez Fight Recap
by Trever "DeuceDrop" Malagon - 02/21/2006
This past Saturday I was at the Aladdin to watch the fight card they had by Top Rank. From some of the reports of the fights I have read, I have to say that they were pretty inaccurate as to what actually happened. I read some report that had said some fights were landslides, another fight was an easy win; but I don't think so.

Boxing on the Upswing
by Jeremy "Fasttalker" Bjornberg - 02/17/2006
The boxing scene is really heating up, all the way from prospects to high profile pay per views as we come to the end of February. Paul Malignaggi and Peter Manfredo each looked impressive recently on ESPN to raise their status as potential champions. Fres Oquendo even made a comeback after two years to win a boring ninth round technical knock out. I decided to do a little review of a few of the upcoming championship caliber fights.

El Feroz and Sugar Look to Restore their Reps
by Jeremy "Fasttalker" Bjornberg - 02/17/2006
When Golden Boy Promotions announced that fellow Californians Fernando Vargas (26-2, 22 KOs) and Shane Mosley (41-4, 35 KOs) were squaring off on Feb. 25, it didn't exactly catch the excitement of the general boxing public. Mosley looked lackluster in both of his losses to Winky Wright and he seemingly continued the downward spiral with two decision wins over fringe contenders.

Castillo Bores His Way To A Decision
by Jeremy "Fasttalker" Bjornberg - 02/08/2006
As I watched the amazingly boring fight Saturday night between Jose Luis Castillo (54-7-1, 47 KOs) and Rolando Reyes (26-3-2, 16 KOs), I realized how much we all should love Diego Corrales.

by Drew "King" James - 01/31/2006
HBO seems to be in a very giving mood this New Year, as they treated fans to yet another marvelous night of boxing last Saturday. This time it would be boxing's human highlight reel, Arturo Gatti, testing the waters at welterweight for the second time in his career, as he moved up to face undefeated Thomas Damgaard (37-0) of Denmark.

92 Million Fans Thrilled Again! Morales/Pacquiao Recap
by Jeremy "Fasttalker" Bjornberg - 01/25/2006
As shocked as I was at this weekend's rematch between Erik "El Terrible" Morales and Manny "Pac-man" Pacquiao, it can't compare to the shock of the Mexican contingent that showed up to support their hero. If a knockout loss wasn't enough humiliation, the Mexican fans were also out cheered by the thousands of Filipinos in attendance.

By Jeremy "Fasttalker" Bjornberg - 01/13/2006
Oxnard's finest, Fernando Vargas(26-2, 22 KOs), has signed on to fight home-state rival Shane Mosley(41-4, 35 KOs) on February 25. In a strange twist the fight will be promoted by each of the fighters' biggest rival, Oscar De La Hoya, and his promotional team, Golden Boy Promotions.

My Boxing Christmas List
by Jeremy "Fasttalker" Bjornberg - 12/20/2005
As 2005 starts to wind down I can only hope that 2006 offers the fights the boxing community deserves. 2005 was a pretty good year, especially from an underdog perspective. As always many PPV fights turned into boring slapfests topped off by perennial stinker Roy Jones Jr. in his grudge match with Antonio Tarver. The Jose Luis Castillo scale cheating also put a stale taste in my mouth for his PPV against Diego Corrales.

Is Zab Judah a Prince or King?
by Jeremy "Fasttalker" Bjornberg - 12/20/2005
Zab Judah (34-2, 25 KOs) was once hailed by experts such as Max Kellerman as the second coming of Pernell Whitaker. Some might disagree that Kellerman is even intelligent, and that Zab still could fill his potential.

by Jeremy "Fasttalker" Bjornberg - 12/02/2005

Mitchell Unable to May"weather" the Storm
by Jeremy "Fasttalker" Bjornberg - 11/21/2005
Longtime Jr. Welterweight champion Sharmba Mitchell was outclassed easily by the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world, Floyd Mayweather Jr. Floyd was simply too fast, too smart and too strong for the shot ex-champion.

Corrales verses Castillo Rematch
by Trever "Deucedrop" Malagon - 10/02/2005
Diego Corrales and Jose Luis Castillo get it on again this Oct. 8, in Las Vegas. I, much like millions of other boxing fans can't wait. Is this fight going to be as exciting as their last one? Is it going to have the same kind of drama? I sure think so; I think that these two guys are going to fight the exact same. In all actual reality, neither fighter can fight any other way. These two warriors gave it their all in the last fight, a true full blown assault against one another. The fight was filled with give and take action until someone had to break.

James Toney Brings His Big Mouth to Reno
by Trever "Deucedrop" Malagon - 09/30/2005
James Toney is coming back into the ring Oct. 1 against Dominick Guinn. This is going to be Toney's first fight back since having his last fight changed to a "No Contest", after testing positive for steroids. I believe Toney saying that he didn't take them purposely, but for rehabilitation of his torn bicep. He could beat John Ruiz with a hangover. He doesn't need steroids to fight; he's been doing it successfully for seventeen years.

Chris Byrd is defending his IBF world title against DaVarryl Williamson on Oct.1st in Reno. Byrd, who has a record of (38-2-1,20 KO), needs to be impressive against Williamson. In Byrd's last few fights he has looked pretty shaky. On top of being knocked down against McCline, he was getting hit more than usual in other previous fights.
